I still can't understand how an ordinary lamp post on a pavement could kill 2 people on a bike.
What kind of speed were they riding at?
That is a good question.

I also wonder how two teenagers from deprived community can afford a bike worth £5k. And why they were followed in first place...

That might be the average House price in Ely, Cambridgeshire;

But not the average for house prices in the Ely area of Cardiff.

Judging by the videos, between 30 and 40 mph? This lamp post is on a straight bit of road:

If it's this lamp post (properties nearby look similar in this street view), the road is slightly downhill after the bollards, and they could have been accelerating?

Also the same type of white van, similar bushes.

so who owns the bike? As for why they were followed, I suppose it was just bad luck. Apparently, they spotted the police van in the distance so they did a U-turn. The police started to follow them until the boys outwitted them by leading the police to a barred road.

You can see cars parking in the street. Did they ride on the pavement?

It seems likely nobody witnessed this happening. There were two riders, and if one or both were panicking they might have lost control of the bike's balance? Or perhaps they mounted the pavement to avoid a large vehicle approaching, but were going too fast and lost control? Maybe they mounted the pavement intending to hide in a friend's house?

I see the police have managed to knock down an 11 yr old. Apparently responding to an emergency, which probably means someone has parked on a double yellow line.

The first video released, does appear to show a Police van following the eBike.

It now transpires, from the other Video released later, that the eBike was initially headed towards the Police van and that it turned around to ride away from the Police van coming towards them. Thus the first video with the Police van very close behind the eBike.

Then another video was released of some seconds later with the eBike dissapearing into the distance with the Police van a long way behind, i.e. not 'chasing' the eBike which is what the Police initially said.

So why were the the other videos showing that the Police van was not apparently not 'chasing' the eBike only released or made available some time later ?

I doubt that the video clips circulating publicly were released officially

Enlarged from video - unless it's left hand drive, looks like there were two cops in that van who's identity will eventually be known by the residents of Ely.

And eventually the identity of the person who facilitated the boys having use of the bike may be known

I was driving in the Cardiff town centre today, I do normally avoid this, I just hate all the traffic congestion. Cycling is so much easier, but I had to drop someone off to visit a clinic.

On my journey in the car I saw a number of eBikes, mostly Deliver*** riders on what looked like DIY converted bikes.

All were being driven on throttles, which is completly acceptable since presumably the riders had put their bikes through the appropriate certification process.

Around 50% had dinner plate size rear hub motors, which its possible were over the 250W limit. But thats OK as well you can buy 250W stickers on eBay.

Who cares, no consequences .....................

I've read reports on this forum many times about delivery riders using dinner plate sized motored bikes to deliver food to dinner plates, but in my area have yet to see one - they all use cars.

How to stop illegal ebikes safely (for the [uncooperative] rider) in a tricky problem. When conversions and modifications are outlawed, and all electric vehicles are fitted with kill switches wielded by coppers and hackers, it won't be.

Maybe the Police can use this microwave gun to disable ebike electronics?
