Lightweight 'legal' kit then, if it's just to turn on occasionally for a bit of help up a hill off-road without being a beast round your neck most of the rest of the time when you want to ride unpowered on flat / DH.

It won't have 'grunt' but it'll take the edge off the effort and allow you to ride the bike on-road under 'amnesty from prosecution' until new rules come into effect. On flattish terrain you don't need high powered motors unless you want to ride fast and unless for initial acceleration most likely won't really need a motor at all.

No, it's quite legal. It's the same motor as the Kudos Ariba. Theirs has TOPs (Torque Optimisation Program) which increases torque at low speed for better climbing. Ours has BOTTOMS (Boost OF The Torque On Minimum Speed), which works in a similar way. The slower you go, the more torque you get. Even the 200w Powabyke Euro would be able to climb those hills without pedalling, because its motor also produces high torque at low speed with low power. Normally Steve would be pedalling, but he had to go fairly slow because my bike only does 15mph before power cut-off. Bikes with throttles have a big advantage over pedal-only bikes because you get the choice to pedal or not. This sometimes makes those without them think it's a bit unfair.
Yes AND you get the choice to peddle and throttle at same time giving you more control, or feels like i8t , i was somewhat disapointed with CD and Tonnaro
now i suppose its horses courses, and if you don't try you wont know. and you appreciate what you've got.

geostorm,

I suppose many testers will agree with you that there weren't much to impress them in comparision with what they have already. Part of the reason, the test track is not very challenging nor very long to show up the difference. The 'hill' is about 100m long with the steepest section (10%) about 50m long. With a hub bike, you would not need to change gear on the hill, just turn up the throttle and/or pedal a little to help the motor out on the steep part, and you sail up it in total comfort.
With crank drive bikes, you have to select a 24T - 28T before getting on the hill, climb for 10 seconds and then change back to 12T-16T at the end of the hill. The goCycle with electronic gearbox scores highly here because it takes the hassle away from the riders.
I suspect that most testers, having not got enough practice with the test bike, can hardly find the right gears. If they don't change gears, they'll get the wrong impression. In my view, crank drives suit cyclists much better.

Yup, I guess that's the way forward... something like your CST kit or d8veh's Rocky Mountain.
I'll have to read up on your build ;)
You need a 20Ah battery with that particular CST motor / controller and the combo isn't light. It's got more than enough 'under the hood' to compensate for all that weight though . A straightforward mountain-mounter, plain and simple, and only needed to reach the riding areas. Triple chainring so gets ridden off-road with the power off, which owing to the bike it was to start with it's very good at, but it's heavy.

Was a lightweight racing MTB before conversion and it can never feel the same riding off-road unpowered as it did before. But you can't have it all and I reckon it still rides better unpowered than a less sporty MTB would ! With a car to drive it up the 'mountains' to where it's ridden off-road I'd strip the electrics off it and put it back how it was.... and may well do so in future.

d8veh's built Rocky Mountain is a dual motor.
