Steve & d8veh...

Danny suggested I try Road Legal 2 again, with throttle override disabled & no governor mode & it's now working pretty much as I would expect.

I still have plenty of tinkering to do but, with pedals held still, throttle only ramps up to about 6kph & with pedals allowed to rotate, ramps all the way to full speed provided the cadence reaches 70, which is what I set it to for 100% power.

When you set the throttle override, obviously you leave the throttle shut for setting the low point, but do you go to full throttle to set the high point, or leave it shut?
You leave the throttle shut. The Speedict software will gradually increase the throttle output each time you press the "+" button.

For the low setting, the idea is to press "+" (about 13 times)until the wheel starts to turn and then press "-" a couple of times to givea small margin.
Then for the high setting, keep pressing "+" until it won't go any faster, and add a couple more for the margin. When you press "OK" or whatever it is, the wheel will spin for a bit, often stopping and starting before finally stopping, so be careful, and then the results are storedin memory. The Speedict then knows the exact voltage to start your throttle, and it will also know the voltage that gives top speed so that it can translate your actual throttle values to something within that range.

The 6mph max speed with the pedals still is how it's supposed to work in legal mode 2 because that's what makes it legal

Thanks d8veh - I thought that must be the way of it, after several goes at it but, a couple of times, the damn thing just kept spinning at max until I switched off at the battery, which introduced an element of doubt

I was amazed when that finally worked proper: I'd had several goes at getting that mode to work & had all sorts of weird results; possibly because I had wrongly set the governor mode & throttle type.

Can you clarify what's the difference, in practical terms, between Current type & Voltage type throttle & which, if either, might work best with my brushed crank drive?

Good question. I've got a feeling a current throttle will work better. It'll work more like a motorbike. The wider the throttle opening, the more current the controller will give. A speed throttle controls the speed at which the motor will spin, which isn't so relavent for crank-drives. I find that I end up using too much current with a speed throttle and end up wasting a lot of battery.

A speed throttle will control the speed at which the motor spins.
A current throttle increases the amount of current to the motor like a motorbike throttle feeds more fuel to the motor. It's not easy to get a good current throttle, so you'll have to try it to see how it works.

I've sent a couple of port status reports to Danny @ Speedict, so we have been communicating by email:

Below is a cut-&-paste of our last couple of emails...

ME:
I am quite happy to continue this on the pedelecs forum (speedict support thread), if you think it might help someone; although they are not all as thick as me :)

DANNY:
I am thinking to step aside of the forum because before my involvement i have seen your guys help each other like a community, now i am not sure because of holiday mood or not, they seem not active anymore.

ME:
I think the lack of activity is due to the holiday break: Also, a couple of the more knowlegible members didn't receive their new speedict mercuries until a day or so ago.
I suspect some of us may have thought you wanted to keep the support thread as a kind of semi-official support, with questions & answers to & from you, rather than each other chipping in.

If you post that you're happy for people to help each other where possible & you'll chip in where needed, I think that might do the trick.

DANNY:
can you explain this for me on forum ?

So, as you see, Danny would prefer that we help each other as usual, but he'll be available "on the side":

Have I stated the forum's case as others see it? If not, please make your opinions known, as I feel it would be a disaster to lose Danny's input.

I think that in these 'early' times of bugs glitches and software shortcomings it's very important that Danny is at the front of the help desk... Even more so as the other types of Speedict are released,

Danny has shipped these Speedics all over the world - hopefully (for him) thousands of them. It would be a big job to reply to every query, so it would be better to help ourselves where we can, which will leave him more time to sort out any real problems. I have had Speedicts for a year now, and I know that Danny will always sort out the inevitable spftware problems. You just have to be patient.

hi guys,

we just open a brand new speedict mercury form our stock because i want to simulate your problem !

1. connect port 1 with speed sensor, port 2 with throttle, port 3 pas and port 4 to speed controller (china made)

2. power up mercury, get it paired
3. run mercury app, and right into function mode, select throttle
4. on setting, next .... button to the end and save the setting
5. throttle mode work !

so should you guys have throttle mode issues, may be you can re-flash your firmware 1.0.0 in order to reset everything and like i did immediately to throttle mode, see if it can help, then we come back to check what went wrong last night !

by the way, i suggest you guys download a firmware 1.0.0 to your android (local) keep it safe, in case of any setting issues, without internet ready, you can re-flash firmware anytime anywhere :) provided firmware 1.0.0 is bugs free :D

I can confirm that re-flashing the firmware with vesion 1.0.0 fixes the throttle problem in Throttle Mode. we have now set our bikes to 15 mph speed limit, which also works and still gives full power for hill climbing.

that's great ! now can you re-set the throttle function mode as you did yesterday like set throttle mode, throttle type, governor etc., because i would like to know which parts of setting we need to remind users aware of, and we may provide step to step setup procedure on android client ...

Cat-****-trophy

Downloaded firmware 1.0.0
Upgrading firmware....
Reached 30%, bluetooth disconnected ( phone 150mm from mercury)
Restarted bluetooth, speedict app now frozen, with the little "updating" circle merrily rotating, but nothing happening.

There are no leds showing on the mercury.

Any suggestions what to do now?

do you mean when re-connect battery to mercury, no both red and green led flashing ?

Shut down your phone by holding the off button. Then restart it and repeat the flashing procedure. It'll carry on where it left off. I guess your bluetooth dropped out. Ours both did it but didn't crash the phone. We just had to start again.

My phone didn't lock up, strangely: Other apps work ok, just the speedict client seemed to be waiting....
The hardware looks poorly now, though.
