A lot of these two wheeled, electric platforms are zipping up and down the pavements lately. Are they legal? I can not find anything on them either yes nor no. Sorry if this has been already covered but nothing turned up in the search.

I don't think they are in public places or pathways.

saw one in Wycombe yesterday, thought it was incredibly stealth, BUT zero cardio, dread thinking how much weight I'd gain if I stopped walking altogether

They are not legal in the UK anywhere the general public has access. That they are used by certain operators for various group activities does not change that fact and brings up concerns as to the validity of any insurance cover claimed by the operators.

They are inherently dangerous as Jimi Heselden, the company owner, discovered five years ago when he died after going over a cliff on one of his own machines.

Thanks oldtom but I knew about the Segway. What I am inquirering about are the two wheeled platforms, with no control arm, called segboards. They are sometimes refered to as hover boards.

And no, most have 2 x 350w motors so 99% sure these aren't legal

Hi, I couldn't watch the video above so not sure what we are talking about but some Chinese guys on the stand next to us at the NEC cycle show had what I would describe as a Segway without the handle. They were basically a footplate that you stood upon,I think you tipped forwards to go forwards and then pressured right or left to turn.
There were many kids who fell flat on the faces, lots of tears.
Unsure of the legality but seemed as accident waiting to happen, even on a flat carpet.

No, they are not legal. Any form of motorised transport used in public places has to be specifically approved for it to be legal, either by type approval or by exemption from type approval. These have not been ruled upon, which makes public usage automatically illegal.

Was hoping you would have something to add as you seem to have your ducks in a row when it comes to legal issues. What you say makes perfect sense. I saw these guys at the NEC too which raised my hackers a bit. Methinks this needs to be nipped in the bud quickly. Bikes on pavements are one thing, these things do not look that easy to control.

I have witnessed many horrific crashes by young people on the roller skates, popular in my childhood and youth. On occasions, innocent pedestrians were badly injured after being bowled over by racing youths going much quicker than these segboards can manage and unable to take evasive action in time.

I shouldn't think the segboards are nearly as dangerous as roller skates but being powered vehicles, I'm sure there would be some who would make it their business to 'enhance' them and then it all gets silly and undoubtedly dangerous.

I'm working in London all week. I've seen a few zipping about, but the Met don't seem bothered. I saw a traffic cop stuck in traffic today, the guy overtook them on the pavement. No reaction.

Someone in the e-bike world, well known,I overheard him asking for a quote for 200 pieces from the chinese guys.....most of the people testing seemed to have real control problems but I suppose its a case of practice makes perfect.

I caught a bit of a TV programme a few months ago - it might have been The Gadget Show but might not - where three people had to get from Waterloo Bridge to Covent Garden in the quickest time. There was a pedelec and something else, and one was riding one of these Segboards. As I recall the bloke riding it kept falling off and at the end he went arse over tit and almost under a bus. He actually hit the side of it with his body after he’d parted company with the board thing.

Well you’ve shared the photo and if you’ve liked the page you’re in with a shout. Look forward to seeing a picture of you in full control of one of the things in due course.

Saw a teenager outside my house on one of these.
He didn't seem to be going anywhere, just played around on it within about a 5 yard circle.
Seemed to be more like skating or dancing rather than travelling.
He was rather good at it though.

At least they are relatively quiet, unlike the petrol powered ones of circa 20cc that used to be around.
