Hi Nigel (I'm also on the Yahoo Brompton group)
A cyclist of your calibre don't need assistance! ;)
Just kidding, low-power e-Bromptons are fantastic to cut down sweat, to help riding up hills, but do expect to pedal as well (which in my opinion, is how electric bicycles should work...I'm not a fan of moped-like e-bikes).
Cheers, Dan

Another 80mm motor Jerry?????? Bafang 80 - shift size 80mm.
Excellent find!

Did you ask for details of the the weight ?

If you get one you can test that too and hopefully it will give all us small wheel bikers more options.

PS Yes Frank someone pmed me about that one but look at the weight

Jerry

I did not ask about the weight, but dont see there being much difference if it is a true 80mm motor more concerned if it has an internal free wheel system and details of the interconnecting connector shown and whether it links up with their ready made cable harness they are selling.

I hope cwah doesn't see this post.;) but seriously that looks like it could resolve the problem for narrow forks -nice find Frank.

I've been in contact with crystalyte europe few months ago about the G209 motor. Apparently they may have a version of the motor that would be "plug and play" with the brompton front fork. (right shaft diameter)

However, this motor is still at 4kg, is laced radially (so you need to unlace the wheel in order to open the motor if you have any problem), is also quite expensive at £250 and add drag as it's direct drive.

I've decided to go to a Mac geared motor for a second setup for the torque and it "only" weight 4.3kg compared to the G209 :)

Sorry Jerry off topic.

Cwah I've asked for details for the rear motor and wonder if it will drop in the back of a Brompton without the need for modification.

Yeah, don't know if it would fit the rear motor.

But actually I don't mind widening the brompton rear dropout to fit the motor I like. I did that (thanks to john) with my actual brompton (up to 145mm) and I don't have problem folding the bike.

Just had an email this morning saying my motor has shipped. Yesterday I also picked up my brand new white Brompton M3L-X.

Well I say brand new it must be the last new 2011 Titanium model around, as Brompton have no delivery dates for Ti models due to sourcing/quality problems. I will need to move the two speed across from my other Brompton.

Tip from me on Ti Brompton conversion - The titanium mudguard stay doesn't bend very easily and after just a couple of attempts to make it the right shape it crumbled into bits. Having broke mine I ordered a steel one which is only about £10 and makes virtually no difference to the weight.

I chickened out of widening the Ti forks but I believe others have done it!

Thanks for the stay tip.

Yes others have stretched the forks quite a bit to fit 100mm wide motors, so I am hoping that stretching mine to fit an 80mm motor will be ok :p

Jerry.

I may start a new thread for my build but in the meantime I picked up Brompton M3LX last week.

I am trying to learn how to change the white balance on the camera as this bike frame is VERY white lol

It is crying out for a Union Jack sticker somewhere on the main frame :p

Overall I am very pleased with it. The front and rear frames in Titanium look nice in their unpainted form. The pics show it stock M3LX 10.5kg. I have played around with the two gear option and kojaks and this brings its weight down to around 9.8kg. The new hub should be here Tues/Wed and hopefully at 1.4kg will keep its carry weight at around 11.2kg. This will make it almost 3kg lighter than my current Brompton.

Regards

Jerry

DHL delivered my new motor this morning. Will post some pics tonight after work. As stated it is physically smaller (diameter) than the current Tongxin offering as well as being about 0.6kg lighter.

The controller is small and is pedelec only so going to need some explanation from you guys on how that works, me being an ardent throttle jockey :p

Looks like there is a cutout brake/switch cable as well.

I am tempted to try it on my existing Tongxin controllers with throttle, but will probably use it first on the supplied one.

Regards

Jerry

You're motor's silver! Mine are black! I didn't ask for black, though I would have picked it if I'd known there was a choice. Did you ask for silver?

I've been peering at your new Brompton (nice!), wondering about the gap between the crank and bottom bracket shell. Is it big enough for the magnet disc?

You're going to be way ahead of me. Nothing will happen with mine until A levels start in a week or so. I've been lured (dragged?) out of retirement to take over a couple of Year 2 A level groups at my local College, covering for an absent teacher. Wouldn't have been half so difficult if a) the new Chief Examiner had not changed the syllabus and exam format since I last taught the subject and b) a whole month had not elapsed between the teacher's absence beginning and a replacement (me) being drafted in. Grumble, grumble...... The students are pretty good though, notably the six (six!) Goths.

Without going cheap and cheerful, finding a bike the magnet disc will fit without changing the crank and BB leaves little room for choice. If I can't identify a bike by the end of this week I shall start from scratch and build it frame up - perhaps, with a black motor, going for a Gothic look!

Cheers!

I think all the ones without the controller built in are silver as standard though I am sure you could request black as they seem fairly flexible even offering to drill it with 28 or 32 holes.

The pedelec disk should fit as there is a gap though it may require a little "modification".

I am still looking forward to retirement which seems to be moving further ahead as fast as I can approach it. I am 51. At least as a public servant I still have a pension, at the moment anyway
