If it's that bright I'd be interested to see how to wire a 'dipped' beam switch for when in town or approaching oncoming vehicles.

Still waiting for mine!

I'm just going to angle mine up and down as needed, the bit of rubber under the clamp will let it slide. If I go the bracket route as per dv8eh then it will be main beam only....

I did it with 1mm sheet, but I think 1.6mm would be better because mine flaps a bit. I drilled a hole and then used a Dremmel clone to open up the hole to the size of the steerer tube. If you haven't got one, you need to get one otherwise you won't be able to call yourself an engineer. The Aldi/Lidl ones are pretty cheap when they do them. You could of course do it the olld-fashioned way with a file.
:) ... I bought a file today for £2 from that machining firm ... but it's a bit on the large and rough side  .. sent you a PM about the dremel clone kit ..

Can you cut 1.6mm aluminium sheeting with cutters ? Am thinking a pair of these might be a worthwhile purchase....

I've been teaching woodwork/metalwork etc for the last 10 years. It's brilliant to be able to shout out across the class, "Can you get me a bastard file out of the cupboard please?". Sometimes I taught specifically filing technique so I was able to hold one up and say."This is a bastard file".

Respect to you Dave

I should imagine the satisfaction when a student understands and grasps the skills your imparting is priceless (and makes up for all the ones that will never get it)

wurly, can you post up some info on how to rig up a variable brightness setting switch and a fuse for this ?

Am I right in assuming that the power lead from battery to controller will need a splitter inserted to take power to the light or is there some other way of connecting to the battery ?

Also, where do you get your rubber strips for protecting the frame ? I need some to go between the bracket for this light (forthcoming !) and also some thin ones to go under brackets fixing battery box to top tube (also forthcoming !).

Took some pics of the light next to the cree ones for comparative purposes and illustrating the setup you describe above :

Rubber strips in my place come from old inner tubes, even if you had to sacrifice a new tube it is still cheap on the per strip cost :)

I ordered one of these a couple of weeks back, I asked for a red light, I got a white light. Here is a copy of the email I received from them ...
Dear buyer
thanks for your mail.
sorry to hear that.
can you pls take a pic to ladysuj@gmail.com show us the problem? can you pls let us know your ebay id? thanks. we will have a check and make a record first, then we will figure out a solution for you after your pic, do you think is ok? waiting for your reply.
best regards!

It seems strange they want me to take pictures of it, like they don't believe me, and I explained the problem in the first email, and my ebay id. was on the first email too. It clearly states on my ebay order form what I ordered ... Please send a red one, thankyou. I'm now waiting for a reply.

It is pretty much standard operating procedure for some Chinese online stores either that or a video, if you follow their steps you usually get a satisfactory solution.

So I received mine today and I notice 3 things;

1) It's huge. I'm going to have to be creative with where to mount it on the Brompton (a bracket where the usual dynamo light would go is what I'm thinking).
2) It's bright....but
3) It has a surprisingly bright and focused hotspot which I'm not sure is a good thing. I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs in reality but looking at the beam pattern in the house it seems far too narrow. I'm hoping there is enough spill to light the road directly in front of the bike; if not then this light is a no-go. Perhaps a diffuser of some sort on the front, we'll see.
4) It doesn't seem very weather proof at all (no o-rings or seals whatsoever).

Was wondering about the beam pattern. I fitted a diffuser onto both my cree XML lights and the pattern was far better on the road than without. The diffuser pattern can be seen on the comparative pic above. Will look around for one now that the diameter can be ascertained but might be tricky to find that size.

I also worried about the weatherproofing as there is no lens / o-ring. The metal casing which the lamp holes are cut out of isn't enough as water would most likely get between this and the lamps into the part where the wires are soldered onto the flexible heat sink. It was very apparent modification was going to be needed when I unscrewed it !

If you don't mind, keep us updated with any weatherproofing mods (where can one buy a slim o-ring of this lens diameter?). Also with what you may decide to use as a diffuser.
