If they are made legal I would imagine similar restrictions to German i.e. no riding on cycle paths etc. However there is a long way to go and you know the snails pace the UK government likes to go at. Will not truly believe it until it happens, assuming it does.
 
my knowledge of German law isn't great, but if you want to ride one in Germany, doesn't it have to have a registration plate, mirrors and you have to wear a full face helmet? and even then you can't use them on shared cycle paths etc etc.

If they are legalised in the UK, I suspect similar things will be put into place to make them safe to use, and safe for other people around them. Currently they are not safe because they are not legal, and equally they are not legal because they are not safe.

You were arguing on the basis of safety though, not legality. If the bike is unsafe to sell, it'll be unsafe to use in any country. On the other hand, if it's safe in Germany, it should be safe here.

The UK government have had since 2003 to sign up to EN15194,add another 10 years to make up their minds about throttles(unlikely considering they are not legal in Germany) another 10 years for S class....unless of course UKIP hold the balance of power supported by the Liberals,now there's a sobering thought!....something about the Sahara freezing over!!!!!

Sad I know, but if I found a new old stock Bionx version tucked away collecting dust in a dealers at give away money, I'd probably be tempted to buy it to squirrel away. It would have to be the version with the black stickered battery though.

Must admit I'm not sure why the first foray into S-pedelecs would be an MTB. Off-road usage generally involves climbing (at less than 15mph) or descending (with gravity assistance). The additional benefits of an S-pedelec, chiefly assistance over 15mph, are therefore rather wasted. I would have thought a more appropriate bike would be one focussed more on road or possibly fast trail use, one where sustained drive over 15mph would be expected.

target market is every much people who want to ride up the roads / fire roads / trails and then descend on the technical stuff. Think Alpine riding, where these will sell.

For the UK, we're doing this frame with the standard (UK Legal) performance drive bosch system, which will be perfect for the riders looking to do some UK DH / Freeride (where uplift is currently by bus), without the need for the lifts.

Hi Col,

Will this new facility near Mold be stocking the KTM lycan 27 GPS+ by any chance? I want to try and get one before December if possible and having a dealer close enough to Liverpool for first service and in case of any warranty issues would be ideal.

Will they be providing sales, servicing etc of ktm pedelecs or just using for rental emtb leisure activity purposes?

I completely agree, the additional speed is required on the road. For myself, I'm happy without it off road.

I'm sure most decent downhillers would not want to clatter down on a heavy e-bike. So I cannot see the requirement for them either.

interesting you say that... I'm an ex world cup Downhill racer, and my downhill bike weighed about the same as this eBike.

The lads I race and ride with would love to be able to do 20 runs on their local DH tracks on a bike like this with no need or uplift, and the faster they can get to the top, the more time there is for coming down.

However most of the lands I know also ride and race motorbikes, so the all just want the legal ones, they wouldn't use the s-Pedelec version in the forests in the UK.

Fair comment on comparable weights but the e-bike carries additional weight because it has to.
A downhill bike carrier addition weight, amongst other things for additional strength.

True, but no ebike will have the geometry of an out and out dh race bike. These things are more like gravity enduro bikes but at dh bike weights which is what makes them attractive to two key markets. Younger riders and old school Enduro mx riders who can't ride their motorbikes anywherethese days.
