Wonder how the Ultrasonic bath would compare with a standard chain cleaner bath with an electric air pump hose down in the fluid? Probably too many bubbles!

The ultrasonic has to be the easiest thing ever... put the cleaning fluid in, put your chain in,turn it on and in 3 minutes it's done.

A word of caution though, never put any part of your anatomy in the bath whilst it is operating and don't use them with flammable liquids.

The ultrasonic waves can be harmfull to human tissue, they also increase the evaporation rate of solvents and flammable liquids which could lead fire or worse.

I sort of guessed it might be a hazard to put paraffin in there, but so far no problems....

I find that if I use paraffin in my ultrasonic cleaner, my dentures taste awful next time I put them in there. On a more serious note, reference was made to paraffin wax, AKA candle wax. If the zips on your panniers or clothing become hard to use, rub the zip with a candle. It is a brilliant zip restorer.

Candle wax is also brilliant rubbed on sticking drawers or doors or windows to free them up. I also used it on fence panels when sliding them into the concrete fence post groove.

Also do not use near dogs, industrial ultrasonic cleaners have a major imact on their hearing it must be like a continuous gunshot or screaming noise at an incredible decible level

VictoryV for many years i used nothing but paraffin wax as a lube on my bike chain and gears, i would clean the chain in a tin with paraffin,take it out to dry,then heat up wax in an empty bean can dip the chain in it and put the rest on the rear gear cluster while turning it round, never had the dreaded black oil line on the trousers hems, chains+gears run for years fine

Yes I did mention a Vulcan, but that was at the end of my Apprentice Training at Halton in 1966 (105 Entry). I then went to Cranwell as a Cadet "Electrical Engineer" (95 Entry). After graduating 5 years later, I seemed to get specialised in communications working on HF radio, the founding stages of Military Satellite Comms (the real SKYNET) for the RAF and NATO. Did a spell as an Officer instructor at Cranwell and then did my only tour on Aircraft as an engineer on the Jaguar Conversion Unit at Lossiemouth in the late 70's. I then moved into the installation of secure voice & telegraph all over the world. Did 4 years in MOD on Comms systems requirements for defence, finished off with 4 years of military logistics IT. Got a job with IBM based on my miltary comms/logistics skills and finally retired in 2008.
So I never saw a Vulcan in action, and never met your friend, but thanks for asking. I was worried I might have been relating the sad story of a relative of yours

I wonder why allotment associations buy paraffin in bulk. I know the official reason is to heat their greenhouses. But I also suspect that they have a paraffin stove in those little sheds you see. A place to get away from the wife, play cards, drink home brew, smoke, vape, swear and possibly engage in satanic rituals.Its a man thing. John h. I had an Ariel 2 stroke, no self service in them days, or litres either. .. It was a gallon and 2 shots..... or somesuch

Castrol R. Now there's a great smell. Never minded a bit of oil seeping past the piston rings and burning on my Norton 600S (four stroker) so I could just enjoy that smell.

Lots of 'oilers' talk here. How about domestic central heating oil for cleaning/degreasing. I have found it pretty good. Nice and cheap if you can scrounge some off a neighbour :0)
Best wear gloves though and don't breathe it in too much
