Just remember - if you do get it road legal it's just that - ROAD - don't take it on a cycle route or bridleway. Get a proper helmet. I bet insurance will be fun and I'd lover to see the look on the MOT testers face when it rolls in

I bet you'd have to use one of the specialised kit car/bike ensurers.

I would keep epac bike as well for holidays etc...My weight, + knee and now my hip causing me grief (don't get old) so a more powerful bike would be helpful.

re CBT: have been driving since 17 (now 59) so not sure.....do you need a CBT for a moped?

No you don't - you've been driving for long enough not to be subject to that requirement. You don't need L-plates either.

Ah, if they are already type approved, you need to get the European Certificate of Conformity for the vehicle, and fill in this form;

Two bikes....the lead moves you onto the business link website....I copied the MSVA scheme,actually I was surprised that if you want to legalise your mini-moped for on road use(as Eddie says it's on road use,that would take away half the fun for me-no riding along the seaside promenade!) its not as expensive or difficult as I thought. How to book a Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval or Partial MSVA inspection
Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval (MSVA) and Partial MSVA inspections are carried out at some Vehicle and Operator Service Agency (VOSA) test stations throughout Britain. You can use VOSA's online vehicle test booking service to find your nearest test station that carries out MSVA inspections.

There are separate application forms for booking MSVA and Partial MSVA inspections.

Download VOSA's application form for an MSVA inspection from the Department for Transport (DfT) website (DOC, 637K) - Opens in a new window.

Yes, that's the method if you haven't got a European Certificate of Conformity, or if for some reason you don't want to use it. If you have got a certificate, then you can avoid most of the testing by filling out the VCA form. I say "most", because if you need to fit UK headlamps and speedometer, and you do it yourself, you have to get a VAT-registered motor dealer or MoT station to confirm in writing that the work has been done.

This method doesn't save you any money though! There is still a fee of £70.

Maybe your right. For shame on me. I never really done the education and PhD that maybe I could have achieved. I just jumped straight into the working world. My experience and although I'm sure not as vast as your own I’m sure hasn't been too bad so far.
I've grown up in the world of retail and have travelled well for my hard work and although I don't have those papers to keep me warm at night I'm doing ok.
I'm hoping to see Dave from Kudo's cycles while I am in China for the fairs this April.

I'm sure I still have much to learn though.

I'm always willing to learn and I’m fast at it too. I have learnt allot from being on this forum and generally acting like a sponge for the wealth of information that is on here and people that you diminish are part of those members I have learnt from. This is I feel the constant belittling of other forum members is unjustified when they are only trying to help others in the quest for knowledge.
So much so that I feel confident that I am now able to offer others help and feel converse with the subjects at hand.

A proper profession. I'm getting there but my current profession is considered professional in the working world. I've done quite well for an untrained, uneducated working class background chap. However I'm sure you’re further up the corporate ladder. But by no means does it mean I'm a worse class of person.

I can afford them. I just choose not to spend the money on things I know I can get better value. If I wanted that £3K bike I could get it. But I don't think they are worth it is all.

The forum has lost someone that has never offended you other than posting a build or offering idea's to other forum members. This is not showing off its merely helping other people. I don't know why you feel its show casing and bragging. I've found no one has bragged about something like that. Or maybe just the post on a build is bragging to you.

Indalo in post number 14 already started to go off topic and start to sway the topic onto other members builds and having a go at them. Then you came in with the people selling illegal bikes. It’s not illegal to sell a product like that. It’s the purpose that matters. The same law abiding bit you agree with Ebikes is switched off when it’s perfectly legal to sell those higher powered bikes.
I for one agree they probably should advertise a market it in that way but that’s the law after all.

I'd rather you keep the post. I was genuinely annoyed at the comments. An yes, it probably was a bit much and a huge out burst and I know it won't hold any weight being in written format on a forum. I just hoped that maybe you'll stop chipping in your two cents if it’s not help or at least advise someone.

If I meet you I would probably never have that outburst. I'd agree to disagree with you, shake your hand and leave it at that.
I may not be as well educated as other forum members, however I know when an opinion does not match another person that believes strongly about it to walk away and leave it.

I'm sorry for the long post but maybe I needed to explain myself and relax.

I'm just genuinely disappointed that we loose a forum member for no real good reason.
An D8veh (Dave) shouldn't just leave the forum on a whim like that. It should be water of a ducks back. The forum is as much his as the next forum member to use no matter if it splits opinions.

However I am still in high spirits and no comments will make me stop enjoying a good forum about something I really enjoy.

My kids are back from Uni today, Just celebrated sons 19th, and looking forward to a nice weekend. Away to Spain on Tuesday for a month......Perhaps we can start again with some mutual understanding and respect.

Dave (kudos) I think you are right and not worth the hassle and restrictions.. I remember a post from Lynda a few weeks back and why she did not buy the Raleigh bike, because with the extended wheelbase it would not fit on her camper bike rack. well that was the reason we got rid of wiper bikes as we needed bikes with normal wheelbase for new camper rack

also with a number plate you cant really go through traffic lights can you, or have a drink......then being just for road use is very restricting if you think seriously about it.....

I dont think it should be removed, I think it not only shows how people can be driven to the edge by other peoples insults , but MORE importantly shows that no matter what, they can be big enough to hopefully have made it up and think more carefully before insulting people and starting a Tsunami........yet again.

Indalo - I don't actually find this post very helpful. It is a thinly veiled threat. I, as well as you, are fully aware of our responsibilities, posts have been edited and, importantly, it seemed clear that others involved in this thread had both voiced opinions and sorted out their differences before you decided to add this unhelpful and inflammatory post.


The UK electric bike scene is a fledgling industry. There will be differences of opinion on what people would like their bikes to do and many parts of this debate are valid. But, at the end of the day, the current law is clear. We do not condone breaking the law. We agree on that at least, but while there are grey areas and some uncertainty as to what changes may lie ahead for the industry, it's natural that lively debates will happen, and that is what forums are all about. We have said before that differing opinions are welcome but disrespect and flaming are most definitely not. You can state your case without being unpleasant please. The aim of the forum has always been to make this a welcome place for all. This is aimed at a specific few that seem keen to leave manners behind when they start typing - this is not just aimed at you - but continued disrespect and flaming will earn a permanent ban as I simply won't tolerate bad language and insults such as we've seen on this and other threads.


We will be making some changes with regard to the structure of the forums, this will be part of a big update that will be occur over the next new months.
