IEC plugs on batterys

Hi

IEC plugs on electric bikes are ILLEGAL Except the input on the mains side off the charger

under the low voltage directive under 50 Volts DC

We stopped using these 3 years ago after reading this article

100, 000 bikes to be recalled in Europe see links below from 2009

Attention: IEC Plug

Bike Europe - News: Flood in e-Bikes Recalls Expected

The other reason is they are Cheap and nasty and not made for the job we use these

Single Modular Connectors - Torberry Connectors Online Shop

The frame off the bike can become live 230 volts mains if plugged directly in to the mains in error Then you or you loved ones could DIE or just burn you house down

If you have this problem This is a job for trading standards they have the power to enforce a recall

This is so important i will start another thread

The solution would be to use a little bit of super glue to permanently glue the mains lead plug into the charger socket.
Then it would be just the same as a charger with a permanently attached mains lead.

" simples " :)

Hi

If you read my posting it says the mains input to the charger is OK it is 230 volts mains that is what the IEC connector is made for

NOT for Battery Connections Out off the charger or connecting the battery to the bike controller

You would have to be way beyond stupid to do this. More EU Political correctness nonsense, no wonder they are in such a financial mess. My Tonaro has the kettle plug, i like it, and guess what? it is staying on the bike.

Also what is this nonsense regarding ZOOM forks? i also have a brand new Kalkhoff Agattu C8 which is the more expensive version at 1795 pounds, fitted with super doopah RST forks and guess what? i cannot tell the difference !!!

Ok, glue both the leads that are supplied with the charger to the charger.
Write a note on the charger 'ONLY TO BE USED FOR CHARGING BIKE BATTERY'
Wrap the charger in fire-proof, non explosive military grade kevlar shielding.
A few post it notes on the fridge to remind you about the dangers of plugging your kettle lead directly into the battery.
Direct hotline phone connection to the local fire brigade, just in case.
If all goes well, then armageddon wont happen

scaremongary will drive potential electric bike users away

Double "simples" :p

I think that being unfair to the great majority of the population who are non-technical, including large numbers of members in here.

Why would it be stupid? That IEC plug is a recognised mains connector used on kettles, computers and a host of other common items always for mains connection. An electric bike is nothing like as commonplace an item as those other universally used things, so how would a non-technical person know it was different? As I observed above, some e-bikes have been made with charger included and are plugged directly into the mains. People often buy second hand without manuals and in some cases buy e-bikes with the charger missing, so they would be particularly vulnerable to making a lethal mistake.

After all, it's not unusual to plug commonplace rechargeable items direct into the mains for recharging, electric razors, torches, emergency power supplies and some hair trimmers for example.

It is a good connector as you imply, but made all the better for low voltage use if the version with a 90 degree rotated earth pin/socket is used as some companies do, Wisper for example.

The charger is a sealed unit for this bike, and the output is the kettle plug. I don't know if it just me, but when i want to charge the bike battery, i simply either plug it in directly to its charger, or take the battery off and again plug it into its charger IT IS THAT SIMPLE.

I just get fed up with these EU idiots, and there ridiculous never ending stupid laws. Before long you will need training in how to breathe, or a diploma for taking a wee !!!!. I notice that China fit these kettle plugs, i guess there people are not so spoon fed and actually apply a bit of common sense, probably why economically they are vastly more successfully than us recently, they stand on there own two feet.

And the other thing Flecc is that you have now been downgraded, to a simple "member" you are no longer a Guru, this is a far more worrying development than the kettle debate.

I agree, it is simple when you know Shep, but as I pointed out, what happens if someone non-technical buys one second hand without the charger as so often happens? I'm also opposed to an excess of regulation, but I think mains safety measures are important for the non-technical, especially with our 220 volts.

Doesn't worry me at all, in fact it pleases me. I never asked for a title in the first place, have refused an offer of admin rights and always insisted that I'm just an ordinary member. This world has far too many titles and uniforms and for me just being ordinary is cool.

I throw in the towel immediately. It was primarily Fleccs superb review of the Kalkhoff Agattu that was the defining factor in me purchasing 2 of them. Listen to Flecc and you will not go far wrong, i still have a lot to learn

Now that we no longer have slavery or serfdom, it's only dogs who have masters as far as I know. Cats, of course, have servants!

A Master's degree in engineering is a nice thing to have though.

Quite right Tim, and I've posted as much previously. Sufficient knowledge of a wide range of subjects is more useful than specialised mastery of one, and it makes life far more interesting.

There's no need to worry about the kettle plug on the Tonaro Bighit, the ground pin is at 90 degrees to the other pins. Only those most determined to be the next recipient of 'The Darwin Award' could possibly plug a 230 volt kettle lead into the battery.
