I read the alfine 8 was ok but the 11 is a bit temperamental?, went with a Nuvinci instead for my build.

Hey that's just my experience.. find someone on here that has one and ask them.
I seem to remember someone having difficulties in the hub area...
If it was a big problem we would here more about it.

Perhaps I should stick to derailleur gears. I had read hubs were more maintenance free. I'll do some more research

they had to turn down the bosch motors to 50nm instead of 60 nm as was to much for them to handle.

it was on the bosch page but gone now but the active range of motors was for hubs gears with lower nm than the performance motors

The nexus 8 is stronger than the Alfine 8 and the Alfine 11 is not recommended for e-bikes torque. This is not personal experience but repeating what I read during my research. Rohloff is good up to 120 nm torque and used on s-pedelecs.

The nexus 8 is now available in disk brake version (I saw the photo).

My Rose has an Alfine 11.

Turbo setting on the Bosch motor is '200 per cent' rather than '250 per cent' to take account of the hub.

I've still had one break, lost second gear which I understand is quite common whether the hub is on an ebike or not.

To be fair to Madison/Shimano, they replaced the hub even though it was well outside the warranty period.

As Phill says, it seems to need very fine adjustment to avoid missed gears, particularly higher up the range.

When it's in adjustment, I think it's great to use and I wouldn't want scabby derailleurs.

But it's always at the back of my mind that a missed gear is only a change away which rather takes the shine off using it.

Kalkhoff fit an Alfine 11 to an S-pedelec, which could well be the worst of both worlds - if the motor doesn't conk out, the hub will.

I Have seen the Giant Roadie in a shop in France it looked like a nice unit. I have a Giant Explore + 0 which I have toured for 700 km on so far in the past 3 weeks in France. Terrain has been anything from goat tracks on the Canal du Midi, to cobbles and smooth tarmac. The build quality and components on the bike I`m very happy with. I have around 15 KG in the rear panniers and the rear wheel has been OK so far. The 500 watt battery I have only run down completely once by flogging it mainly in the top power range into a head wind. I have achieved 80 KM in the ECO setting with 40 % capacity left. We are heading up to the base of Mt Ventoux today and hope to ride up to the top tomorrow if it isn`t too windy. I would like to post some photos and a report, can anyone advise me where to put the report in the Forum, thanks...

To be fair 11 gears inside a hub is a lot to ask!.

What's really needed is an e-bike specific hub with a range of gears to suit and beefed up for the power, after all... a bit of extra weight isn't a problem.

Yes but at a premium. £1000 v £170...so if it didn't manage I'd expect you'd be miffed.

Pinion have an XR (extended range) version for e-bikes, hub motor only of course.

Just had a chat with Ilkley cycles and they are interested in taking my Scott e-aspect 910 in as a PX.
Going for a test ride next week.. wife permitting...

Phill, I think this bike looks great and I could be interested in one. Is the bike they are getting in a test bike because if that's the case I would also like to have a test ride it. The idea of a powered Road bike is great but after reading the review I have some sympathy with the reviewer that a powered Road bike takes away some of the satisfaction of reaching your goals. (The Cafe at Burnsall in my case) and could possibly make the road bike trips feel a bit pointless. Maybe suffering is the point of road bikes. What's your view.
