Seems we, ve known for years how Russia operates and their aims. Why haven't we done anything before??
This is Britain.
We don't do things, we discuss doing them.
We blew excellent chances with Russia over 20 years ago. As The Report says, by the mid 2000s it was far too late. (Meaning with Putin in place)

I, m beginning to come over to your way of thinking Flecc. Let Putin have east of country, get folk out, stop the murder and give time for sanctions to bring Putin to negotiate.
Germany is getting a lot of criticism, they know exactly what's happening yet have let themselves become dependant on Russian gas. Lots of turning blind eyes from us all. I, ve enjoyed watching Chelsea... Look at his connections to Putin.
It's all just appalling. It's all a massive protection racket with nuclear ICBMs being the threat.
We need a system to nullify the damned things. We see them as deterent. Putin as a threat.
Would he be getting away with these war crimes if he didn't have them or they were nullified? NATO would be fighting this war if either were case.

The all inportant land link Russia needs to Crimea is almost complete, but for Mariupol. They are heavily shelling that large city but also seem to be trying a different tactic, cutting the electricity and now the water supply to the half million residents. Hopefully the residents will have to give in before too many more lives are lost.
The water is probably retaliation. Crimea is very dry with no natural water so when Russia annexed it in 2014 the Ukrainians cut off all the water supply. That caused Russia huge problems through having to carry in all the water needed ever since.

That comes of unnecessarily panic about Chernobyl. Germany's reaction was to start shutting down its nuclear reactors and burn more of its coal, then later for obvious reasons using more gas. They shouid have stayed with the nuclear stations and switched more fully to electricity. Italy made the same daft mistake and like Germany and Austria are the more heavily dependent on Russian gas now.
Abramovich has detached from the club to protect it from the sanctions. He's handed it to the Club's charitable foundation.
I'm afraid these cannot happen due to the USA. They'll never give them up while a number of other countries have them and never neutralise if that were possible while they still insist on being in assumed charge of the world.

Anyway they are very smart aeronautical engineeers so will be able to make the parts if necessary.

There is an awful lot of flying within the borders of the Russian Federation and Belarus.
The Russians, along with all countries, have some extremely capable people. But it might not be straightforward to produce a substitute for some fancy parts. And they don't have that high a reputation for producing safe and reliable civilian aircraft.
The mayor of dnipro say he has a million citizens with arms. And that he's preparing to turn it into a second stalingrad (sky news a few mins ago). In the south russian forces have low morale. Russian plans ("having the east of the country") seem less likely than a bloodbath, and nato eventually reluctantly having to intervene
They do have their own airliners and lighter planes so won't be troubled. They shouldnt be underestimated, even the Americans acknowleged their superiority in metallurgy which resulted in them leading the space race.

Quite a number of their more recent aircraft are some sort of co-production and not entirely Russian.
I certainly don't underestimate their capabilities.

Soyuz rockets will be launching as usual anyway since they service the ISS with all its supplies. Musk's craft only takes crews.
As well as that the west will still be dealing with Russia in all sorts of ways. Buying gas, oil and grain for example, and paying for it through Swift which has had those excluded from the sanctions.
And they'll be sneaking in some vehicle and aircraft parts through China. Don't forget China flies Airbus too.
Historically sanctions have never worked against any country.

Sort of agree but think this is rather different. Making poor folk poorer actually has little affect but when those sanctions take away luxury yachts, vast fortunes and luxurious lifestyles I suspect it might have more effect.
Abromovich is panicking already.

Just contemplating what would happen if a Russian military aircraft, either in distress or inadvertently, entered airspace over neighbouring countries?
Would it be "helped" to land in a NATO country by an escort? Shot down?
And would this be different if it was done as a defection? (Not sure how NATO would know. Is there some sort of flying behaviour which would indicate intentional defection? Or could they even use radio?)

I was posting about Russia and sanctions, not the ex pats like Abramovich who are obviously vulnerable.
I say again, sanctions have never worked against any country. I'd think Russia the last place on earth where sanctions will work since hardship is historically so normal there.
The poor will scarcely notice them, the wealthy certainly won't since they'll continue to get all their luxuries one way or another. They always do.
The Russian border is just under 36,000 miles long, equal to one and a half times around the world!
