But cannot you not see that both the UK and USA are the outlyers ?
But it doesn't matter. Why fret about using miles when we don't all drive of the same side of the road. I find it more than amusing that you drive on the left in RH drive cars at kilometres an hour burning litres of fuel.

That makes Eire an outlier of mainland Europe, the UK and the USA!

But cannot you not see that both the UK and USA are the outlyers ? .. and are the miles not even different?. When Ireland was part of the Empire , we even had a different length for the Mile!., So the mile was not even standard. If I cross the Border I just remember to stick to 96 on the antiquated main road to Belfast. When I get on the Motorway at Newry South, ,paid for by Ireland and the EU I go to 120.
USA an outlier with a population of 330 million. That's ridiculous..
And we can't even standardise spelling within a common language. It's "outlier".
We don't need to all have same language, units and such. I just don't see your reasoning. If you want to use SI... Feel free.
If you want to measure horses in hands... Fine.. So what.. Its not only convenient its quiant, gives identity and removes stereotyping. We should celebrate the traditions and stuff that has grown with us.. Yep, USA Gallon is different to ours... And their system is an amalgam of goodness knows what but it hasn't stopped them being leading technical innovators for past 100 years.. (arguably)..
The last thing any government should be doing is telling green grocers you must sell carrots by the kg... Government has much better things to get on with.
I suppose yanks should stop using imperial units for guns. And Purdy still building 12 and 10 bores as they did 200 years ago should be stopped. Utter rubbish.
Its folk wanting to impose their own limited view of world on rest of us. Stop it.
I, m not telling you to use knots, mph, gallons, feet, inches, ounces, hands, bores, force 4,chains or yards. I, m telling you they all have their place within our society and people should not be made to feel uncomfortable for using them.

Think this includes Ireland but Danidl wants it stopped. Taliban would do same.

Nothing to do with this thread, I wanted to buy a product and decided to search for possible sources. The quantities varied from millilitres, ounces, fluid ounces, to gallon – all on UK websites.

When checked in more detail, the conversion factors used between ounces/fluid ounces vary. The conversion factors used between fluid ounces and millilitres varied showing a number are based on US fluid ounces. And the gallon is a US gallon. (Doesn’t say that even when you zoom in – just in tiny type, it shows the contents in litres.)

Only one site showed weight (in grams) and volume (in millilitres).

The quantities involved varied from 10 ml to one US gallon (3.78 litres).

I so wished they were all in listed millilitres/litres only.

You're making it too complicated.

When I want similar, the quantity I look for is enough, my favourite unit of measurement.

Nobody packages in exactly the quantity you need, so enough is all you need look for.

For posh gits the word is sufficient rather than enough.

But most of them show only one of the units. So you have to either prepare a range of suitable sizes in advance, or convert all the ones not in your preferred unit. (I had no idea that it would be available in gallaons so would not have known in advance to convert that.)

I think it is me who wants nice and simple. All millilitres/litres (in this case), please.

And "enough" isn't enough. Assuming equivalent strength/potency, you need to consder cost per unit.

Buy a gallon, decant to units you like and sell what you don't want.
Do you know eye drops are administered in drops.. I was given 84.... Apparently there are 20 drops per ml..???!!!

It's nothing to do with changing back, it's accepting the fact that for everyday usage for vast majority of society our antiquated units are better. They are antiquated for a reason. Or perhaps you, d like entire sailing world to stop using knots... Windfoce system (F5 etc) to be outlawed... Road signs throughout land to be chopped down...etc etc..
I don't think you, ve been reading the posts OG. As an engineer of a kind of course I use SI system and know its advantages. But that doesn't mean all of a sudden I want to discuss windstrenght in km/h (or m/s, French use both and ours). Mates would think I, d had a breakdown if I phoned and said "it's 45 km/h tomorrow.." ...They,d say WTF you on about.. Its a force 6...(or 30kts ish) And long may it last.
There is more to life than building bogs OG.

Besides many engineering measurements are stuck with imperial probably forever. And some manage to mix the 2 systems and with little confusion... Look at wheels on your car. The diameter is almost without exception imperial the world over.. Inches.
The width.. Metric. The profile %age..
205/60/15...
Width 205 mm... Profile 80% .(depth of tyre 80% of 205) And bead diameter 15 inches. Not sure but that pretty much the norm worldwide. (for radial tyres)
Similar story with some bearings, oil seals and such. Imperial units are not going away. And it's nothing at all to do with Brexit. You are politicising it for your little grumble and moan at leavers. (which Flecc isn't)
Accepting the limitations and benifits of various systems is common sense. Use the one you wish... Either way.
But don't legislate one way or another. People are capable of mixing and matching, perhaps you aren't? Personally thought you were intelligent enough to do so??
You haven't been reading my posts properly, have you? I ended on this
"
Even now with the aid of computers it makes no sense to change back whatever, people have long ago adapted to using both systems at the same time, no reason whatsoever to change things.
This is just to kid the half wit Brexit voters they "won" something. "
Tell me why you responded with this?

Do you need it in bigger letters?

Yep - that I did know. (Though in reality, it depends on the substance and how the drops are delivered.)

Have very recently been investigating gutta.

Come on Oyster. What are your scales set to.?
How do you measure economy of your car?
Grams. (Though one of the two scales I regularly use has a range of options.)

Have just got another scale for very small things - it will be set to milligrams. Not carats or troy ounces.

I have enough problems trying to explain the imperfect equivalence of pharmaceutical grains to milligrams (especially as there are, broadly, three different standards in use).

One that always makes me wonder when baking where it says "add a pinch"
What the heck is that?
Is there a British Standard finger and thumb and specified contact area available between the two at a standard pressure, and are these covered by glove sizes and the phase of the moon when the wind is blowing from a specified direction while singing rule Britannia?
This is the time to apply the good old imperial measure when confused
Chuck the amount in that takes your fancy and say the magic words
"That'l Do"

In a global population of 7700 Million then yes 330 million and 66 million are outlyers . Funny that I got no responses to measuring air conditioning units of heating in Tons.. a well established USA convention.

The most fundamental duty of any Government to its citizens is actually the weights and measures acts., the next is regulation of the currency. You cannot run any system of governance without these basic standards. You cannot tax production without measurements. And without tax revenue you cannot have an army to protect the citizenry. . Now the BSI was exemplary in the role of defining derived standards

All this fuss! I never have the slightest difficulty, the types of containers illustrated and the carriage charges give away how much you'll get.

My favourite unit "Enough" is an SI measure, Sufficiently Intelligent. It's so smart it deals with weight, volume, linear measure, strength and speed. What more could you or Milli want?

This reminded me of working underground and taking stuff.
If you got the tin out you would offer a "pinch" to anyone near you.
Some of the old miners would squeeze the button of their jacket between finger
and thumb making a dent, so they could get 3 times as much stuff out of your tin.:D

You must have worked with some gentile miners only taking a pinch. Most of the boys I worked with took a line half way up the forearm.
I see CM snuff is still available, the big problem with snuff is what goes up must come down, not so much a problem at a main gate brushing but decidedly unpleasant in normal social company.

Think OG is running Diplomacy between France and UK at moment. France taking their bat and ball home, well their diplomats in Australia and US... Think the president with small man syndrome is leaving the UK ones in place.. 5th Columnists..
Will this EU army ever materialise.. Probably a few decades late.

Thank you , in France's place I would have done the same as they did, they have moron voters just as we do, and it really is not good enough to say the USA doesn't owe them anything like this.
"But the second painful truth exposed by the Aukus affair is that the US no longer has any great interest in the outdated behemoth that is Nato. Nor does it harbour any particular loyalty to those who have stood by its side.

Stood by it's side?
Christ on a bike!
France was the first ally of the new United States in 1778. The 1778 treaty and military support proved decisive in the American victory over Britain in the American Revolutionary war.
France fared poorly, with few gains and heavy debts, which were contributing causes of France's own revolution and eventual transition to a republic.. The relationship had always been important for both nations.
