those subs can be fitted with both diesel engines and nuclear power generators.
And?
Think you, ll find I said its not just the Nuclear capability, its having access to US technology and the alliance in general.
But rather a flawed concept Woosh... Hybrid??? Why? Could be exactly why they were decided against. No way on earth (or in the sea) the French Hybrid U boats could compete with voyage to the bottom of the sea stuff.

'Blanketed' uplands is the term? Land blanketed in snow, people blanketed in lots of blankets.

It's not hybrid. The Aussies don't need more than 1 or 2 nuclear subs. The rest are diesel. Even so, there is always auxiliary diesel engine on nuclear subs for when the reactor fails. The deal leaves the final choice of power source to later as Australia does not yet have the capacity of building a nuclear reactor.
My guess is the US strong-armed the Aussies into buying their u-boats.

They won't have needed much strong arming, the Australians have been heading towards being a virtual 51st state of the USA for decades.

From the cars they buy, the way they behave, to the houses they live in, the Australians are far more closely aligned to the USA than Britain.

I suspect that they did. I would also suspect that they will be supplying old tech. ,Not new tech. According to a Wikipedia article, which predated this kerfuffle, the French were going to supply them with French state of Art subs, which were designed for nuclear reactors for propulsion, but were being fitted with diesel engines ..whether by French decision or Aussie decision unknown.
It would not be unknown for the US to flog their old tech.. Our colleges were roped into buying US College Software for syllabus and grades management and student records . Everything about it was wrong and obsolete. It used the US measure of Credit Hours not the European Academic credit systems, it required an army of staff to implement it, and it was and is still s mess. But it was a central Government decision and we were required to get on board. Any of our UT Lecturers were livid with it and could describe in graphic terms that it was an 1980s solution not one 25 years later....

It can only be possible on here that folk know more about French and US submarines and what the Australians want from them. Pretentious or what.

Rubbish. Like you have any inside information to suspect anything. Then you alike it to buying test tubes for some science lab. It's laughable.
Bet M or Q have been keeping you and Woosh informed.

That is a pretentious way of looking at us , but then you usually do
Just where did anyone state they "knew" what the Australians "want" from them?
They simply offered an opinion of what they regard as a good idea.
Personally my belief is simply this
You can't deter or threaten an enemy with submarines you don't have, even if they may come into being in twenty years time.

no, we don't know anymore than what is on wiki.
It's just that I read up about it before I post.

I can't imagine there is anything on earth more secret and guarded than the specifications and capability of US Nuclear Submarines, but a couple on here (wasn't including you OG for a change) are pretentious enough to think they can comment on the suitability of various Submarines forvthe Australians. But, I didn't realise the US was now publishing all their "Top Secrets" on Wiki. Yep, sort of expect it from Danidl but you Woosh. Come on get a grip. What us lot know about American versus French submarines could could be written in massive fonts on tiniest of stamps... And why OG gets involved god only knows. But never one to pass up on an opportunity to show his ignorance.... Another James Bond on the Forum, who has all the classified, top secret documents about Nuclear Subs filed next to his Brexit BS. Its unbelievable how the BS has spiralled out of control on here. Is there anything some of you don't know.
A bloke that builds bogs for a living, a retired lecturer and an electric bike builder.. Jesus, you wouldn't believe it would you. All that time wasted not building time machines, Nuclear fusion energy producers, eliminating poverty and ensuring world peace. Really have missed your vocations.

I fully accept that I have no insider information on this deal. But the cursory glance on the Wiki on French nuclear submarines did flag up that the Australians were purchasing a diesel variant of the most recent class of French submarine. The models for the French navy of the same submarine have nuclear power plants. Now what the Aussies will be getting from the USA and UK ,I have no idea... .
In any event , I look at international sales of weapons and ordnance as highly distasteful. It is one thing to design and make them for your own defence, but flogging them off to third parties is in my opinion obscene.

Australians don't have Wiki obviously. Stop digging Woosh, give OG the shovel. His forte is defending lost causes.
We know feck all about American Nuclear Subs and probably less about French ones and less again of requirements Australians have.

That's a different argument, and I sort of agree.
I was pulling you up for suggesting you somehow know more than Australians do about their requirements and which subs are most likely to fulfill their required roll. We are not qualified to comment either way. Agreed the way its all happened is wrong, French getting to know an hour before world knew Australia was withdrawing from a £40 billion deal is bad but the reasons behind it.. That's purely for the Australians. And to suggest they were bullied into it suggests to me you have never spoken or had dealings with our antipedean cousins. It's my experience nobody on earth is less likely to be bullied.
Crocodile Dundee and Donk aren't invented characters. That's your average Australian.(for OG, that last comment is an ironic exaggeration to enforce the opinion Australians are unlikely to have been bullied. Don't take the comment literally OG and start telling me how clever Donk really is and that he does marketry with his mum and dad)

Ultimately, you will end up in the hands of Shitish Gas who will make a complete clusterfuck of all your billing history and meter readings. They will then overcharge you.

When you try to call Shitish Gas to resolve your billing issues, you will spend a minimum of 30 minutes on hold. You will then be put through to a service agent who is working on a laptop, at home, on their kitchen table. Whilst dealing with your enquiry, the service agent will be simultaneously hosting a children’s party and breastfeeding a goat. It’s their right under work / life balance.

After numerous promises and apologies, absolutely nothing will be done to rectify the problems you are experiencing.

Welcome to the private energy market. It’s going to drive down prices for the consumer via increased competition.

Download all of your billing history, take lots of pictures of your meter readings and set up your own spreadsheet to calculate your bills for comparison purposes. Oh, and lodge your complaint to OFGEM today.
Those look like the words of an embittered ex-Peoples Energy customer.
I wonder if we, as customers, have benefited from the privatisation of the energy market.
Thinking back to when we paid the local gas and electricity boards every quarter life was much simpler.
Whilst there was no choice of supplier back then, is the choice we have now of around 70 different suppliers selling exactly the same product and only able to compete by cost cutting and giving poor service really an improvement?
Despite the all cheery adverts suggesting it's a piece of pish, switching suppliers is fraught with the danger of some fuckup or another.
I have 2 smart meters that can't communicate with a home display sitting on top of the communication hub, so how can they communicate with a long range radio mast several miles away.
The whole thing is a complete clusterfuck and I don't see it ever being fixed.

I couldn’t agree more and yes I am an ex-people’s energy customer. I hated them after they failed to take adequate care of my personal data and had it stolen in a cyber attack.

My house energy is now supplied by Avro, who to be fair are good. My garage, which is on a separate meter, is supplied by Symbio who are 20 x worse than Shittish Gas. I won’t bore you with the details.

The energy market is deliberately confusing, it fails the consumer and its failing apart. Very soon we will be back to a monopoly of a few private companies working in a cartel to fleece the customer.

We need to go back to a state run CEGB and state owned power companies. We’ve tried the private route, it crap, abandon it.

Our gas meter is supposed to be remote and send signal to Mars.. We, ve had 3,each one fails.. So they fit a new one.. But they aren't new... They are recon... But not zeroed... So when we phone reading in they tell us its running backwards or we, ve read it wrong... So we say come and look and mend it.. Its supposed to be remote...
This has been going on almost 4 years now... The upshot is... No gas bills.. We have tried to explain all this on at least 3 occasions.. But gave up this spring.... We run central heating boiler /water heater on JC's gas bill...
They really are clueless and useless. At moment I, m not complaining...but honestly we, ve tried..

I dont use gas, and it seems like I've enjoyed the best experience.

For many years I was with EDF and had the benefit of quarterly electricity bills, but after not bothering to change for smallish savings, I finally did some four years ago, choosing Bulb.

And I've liked Bulb very much, not the cheapest but moderate prices, extremely well organised, great communicator and cracking online service, though insisting on monthly billing, They actually take note of anything I say and act on it immediately.

Sadly though I've learnt they are in some cash trouble, having asked the government for a cash bail out it's been refused. Hopefully they will be able to pull through so I'm hanging on with them, lobbing in the usual cash every month. Judging from other failures around here, if they fail I'll probably end up pushed back with EDF, so back to square one and all a waste of time.

As for Smart Meters, they are anything but. When still with EDF they decided they'd install one, but I told them not to bother since one couldn't work here. They work on the mobile phone networks but I have no signal here. They didn't listen, insisting they could get one working and installed it. Three months later after many attempts they finally wrote me apologising, saying they been unable to get it working.

Didn't worry me with Bulb. Their excellent website system meant it was no bother to feed a meter reading to them online every month and get an accurate bill. Eventually they also offered a smart meter, so I warned them likewise that it couldn't work here. They responded saying it was the latest compatible type so should work, so I then explained there was no signal for any smart meter to work. They immediately accepted this, putting a note on my account that I wasn't to be bothered again about them.

It's good service like this why I'll be sorry to lose them if they do fail.
