On 5 July, it’s highly likely that Matt Handcock will be required, as Health Secretary and hence guarantor of our wellbeing, to address the nation and tell us that we must continue to adhere to restrictions placed on our lives due to Coronavirus. Restrictions that he considers himself exempt from and therefore ignores.

I suspect they will send someone like the Culture Secretary to deliver the news and draw fire. Handcock is busted.

Any MP or cabinet minister who supports Handcock or fails to condemn his conduct can’t be fit to hold public office either.

"I suspect the trouble is that Boris is not comfortable in the company of more capable people."
He must be uncomfortable almost all the time except when he is alone.

Indeed, but I dread his replacement. Imagine the kind of damage a bright eyed bushy tailed gove could do. Hancock's privatising of nhs data would pale in significance
Shows Johnson's failure of judgement (as if it were not already so obvious) that he fully supported Hancock.

But yes, his replacement is worrying. Still, he had to go.

He did have to go. But the nhs has become ever more corporate, privatised, soulless. A world removed from the communities of clinicians with duties of care to patients I encountered twenty years ago. Given the mindless destruction gove wrecked in education, I can only imagine what hed have in mind for health

Johnson’s letter:

“And your efforts mean that we have a record numbers of doctors and over 14.800 more nurses working in our NHS than last year.”

(Poor sentence construction and grammar. Perhaps it obeyed the rules for Ancient Greek?)

Government figures from January 2021 state:

Provisional figures show that as of January 2021, there are a total of 123,813 doctors and 301,491 nurses working in the NHS.

Compared with the same time last year, there are almost 6,600 more doctors and over 10,900 more nurses working in the NHS.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/record-number-of-nhs-doctors-and-nurses-in-england

The nurses figure needs to be viewed in the following context:

How many NHS Nursing vacancies are there in 2021?

There are more than 36,000 NHS nursing vacancies according to the most recent data published.

How many Nurses are there per capita in the UK?

At the most recent count there were 7.8 Nurses for every 1,000 British people – which is slightly below the average among developed nations of 8.8, and under half the number there are in Norway (17.7).

How many Nurses have left the NHS because of Brexit?

According to a survey of 88 NHS Hospital trusts, 22,600 EU nationals have left their NHS nursing positions because of Brexit.

https://www.nurses.co.uk/nursing/blog/stats-and-facts-uk-nursing-social-care-and-healthcare-2021/#Nursing

The doctors figure needs to be viewed in the context of a massive number of doctors who are deciding to retire early.

That was actually Danidl quoting me!

Danidl makes a point of not commenting on UK politicians so probably wouldn't like the attribution of the original.

It was indeed.. and that was the reason I did not include the bulk of your posting. It was a feeble attempt at self depreciation humour. Perhaps I should leave that to experts.

Not Gove!

Sajid Javid appointed health secretary after Matt Hancock resigns
That's good. He was a careful but effective chancellor for Johnson until the latter appointed Rishi Sunak to rush things for quicker results, plunging us into ever deeper debt.

If Hancock hadn't already gone he might have had to go...

Matt Hancock used private email account for government business
Matt Hancock faces an investigation after using a personal email account instead of an official address during the pandemic in a breach of government guidelines.

Since March last year the health secretary has routinely used a private account to conduct government business, concealing information from his own officials and potentially the public, according to documents obtained by The Sunday Times.

Gerald Bell @GOldcodger

Are there any decent (using the term loosely) Conservative Mp's who haven't been kicked out? Get your act in order, and rid yourself of these parasites in power.
