The R number is not at all real.
I have the impression that the UK government uses the R for propaganda.
Thay may explain why they avoid calling it R0.
It's widely accepted that R0 represents how many people an average person with a virus infects. The infection cycle is about a 5 days-10 days, so it can be approximate to about a week for which we have daily reports.
Today's report for example says this:

Cases
People tested positive
Latest data provided on 18 January 2021
---------------------------
Daily
37,535
Last 7 days
314,980
-89,975 (-22.2%)

Clearly, R0 is 22.2% less than 1.
UK government insists on using a range because of geographical differences in infectivity to muddy the water.
Claiming that 'R' is greater than 1 justifies strong restrictions, less than 1 justifies priotising the economy while claiming they follow the science.
I would like the government leaves the responsibility of publishing 'R' to the ONS.

And drop off we have seen has fortunately been more pronounced than predicted.??
As for lockdown 2 being more pronounced, I don't think so. Far more people are at work and school's have at least double number of pupils.???
Controlled and monitored social distancing at work and school could well be safer than the first lockdown when many of them were free to socialise much more. And the far worse weather now compared to the very warm spring and early summer of 2020 is keeping them far more indoors and not mixing.

Add the supermarkets tightening up on the regulations now and the continuing growth in home deliveries by the supermarkets as their extra vans come on stream and the combination of all these factors could well be doing the trick in reducing infections.

As intended of course.

Compared to before crimbo schools are only taking in keyworker and vulnerable kids. (More than the 1st locdown as Govt are playing freer as to who qualifies - where before both parents needed to be KW now just 1 etc.) So classes are now 10–15 (though up to 20 in some cases from a usual class of 30.

there could well be a simple explanation.
The new variant is being replaced by an even newer variant.
If only they could be made to attack each other somehow.

Big fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em
And little fleas have smaller fleas
I hope the bxggers bite 'em

I wonder

Only in part. The grossly excessive deliveries of vaccine to some areas enabling these misuses while other areas are still waiting for their first delivery to start vaccination is solely down to central government.

Stop being ungrateful. You’ve had your vaccination and the indication is that your chance of needing hospitalisation should you catch Coronavirus is massively reduced.

What more do you want? With respect to being vaccinated, what exactly has the government done to you that is so bad? You lack the capacity to put you dislike of the government to one side and acknowledge that in the case of vaccinating the population of the U.K. so far they appear to be doing ok.

What has the Government done to me? it's more a question of what have they done to US, you included
First of all it has created the situation we are in now by incompetent handling of the outbreak to the extent of killing tens of thousands of our people in pursuit of saving the economy.
And no I do not think they are doing OK in the case of vaccinating the population
They are making a half arsed attempt using figures that can only be regarded as unreliable and running a campaign based on wishful thinking regarding the dosage period.
You seem to imagine my interest is only out of personal angst , it isn't, it's about a bunch of dangerous villains who are jeapordising the safety of the nation taking risks to appear effective when they are simply not.
For instance
Where is the plan for our long term attack and control of the virus?
Where are the tools for this plan ,such as test and trace?
Where are the billions invested in research to design more effective vaccines and drugs to limit the damage due to long term effects?
Where are the proven effective masks that are issued en masse?
What research has been done on creating truly Covid safe buildings and homes and transport?
And what plans are there to prevent the need for Lockdown after lockdown, when people are not co operating?

This is the reality of our situation

UK now has highest Covid death rate in the world

Nearly 1,000 people are dying each day on average in the UK. Meanwhile, New Zealand has not recorded a single death since September

Now tell me again what I should be grateful for? had they done what New Zealand did the vaccinations would have been simply a precaution, not an attempt to prevent us being overwhelmed

History will record this government as the worst enemy the nation has ever faced and is helpless against.

Try to understand before one of us dies

but the choice is not 90% in both though. It's 50% in each or 100% in one.
If I had to, I'll put 100% in one car and use that one.
But you can't use just one because using one car might infect the other and OG could
end up killing his wife. If we can believe the makers of the vaccine nobody who has had it has ended up in hospital (The Garage).

Let us hope that this remains the case and they do not develop Long Covid or have their immunity reduced.

Constrain yourself to the vaccination programme. We know the government have made a bad job of virtually everything else, we all agree on that.

In terms of vaccination, you are now many times less likely to die from coronavirus. You are very unlikely to put pressure on the NHS due to requiring hospital treatment because of Coronavirus. That means people with cancer and other ailments will get the treatment they need more quickly.

The plan to fight Coronavirus long term is vaccination. It will never go away in our lifetime. The world has changed and we will live with Coronavirus through a regime of vaccination and vigilance.

So to summarise, just a few days into the largest vaccination programme this country has ever undertaken, you have been vaccinated. The indication is that you will not be killed by coronavirus. You are extremely unlikely to need hospitalisation for coronavirus treatment. Your future safety from coronavirus will be delivered via a free vaccination programme and you taking responsibility for yourself through vigilance. I know you want a government that will wipe your backside for you, but that’s not going to happen. It’s a two way street, the government provides the tools, we choose to use them or **** them away.

We have done badly with deaths and the economy, but in terms of vaccination, we are doing alright. Accept it.

I want a Government that doesn't kills tens of thousands through incompetence, and you are simply gaslighting for them
"OOh! look at the Vaccines!"
This is isn't a battle, it's a full blown war and thanks to people like you voting for them we find ourselves on the wrong side
So don't moralise with me having voted as you did.
Did you get what you voted for?

You are beyond help. No one is denying the death rate is appalling and could have been much better. But the vaccination programme is doing well. You are so obsessed with hating this government, you are completely incapable of balanced rational judgment.

Think yourself lucky you aren’t living in France, you’d still be waiting.

I’m waiting for you to start pushing for our vaccine supplies to be given to third world nations now that you’ve had yours and you are safe. It’s called socialism.

But the vaccination programme is doing well.
the bar is set so low .
They pay £12.58 for each jab. Easy money for a lot of businesses besides doctors surgeries. Someone in the know said that the NHS alone could inject the whole population in less than a week if the doses are ready.
Yet, they only managed less than 10% while claiming to have 21 million doses. So far, 4 million jabs in 2 months, 20% of their stock of vaccines.
They keep changing who to blame. Initially the time it takes to vet the vaccinators then the number of sites that are covid secure then the vaccine manufacturers then the quality controllers and finally the shortage of vials.
I realise that progress is being made but it's difficult to imagine how any other government can do worse.

It’s a lot more than any other EU country and one of the best vaccination rates in the world. That’s ok in my view.

that's true but you are comparing UK government against a few bureaucrats sitting in an office in Brussels. They can't splash the cash like Bojo can.
