This is another example of how our idiot police anger me.

The government's website is very clear that there is no such restriction on the elderly and they can go out for daily exercise like everyone else.

This belief that all the over 70s should be in isolation at home is a fantasy, there has never been any such ruling. That advice (not law) only ever applied to the over 70s with symptoms of Covid-19.
.
The couple didn't have a dog

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said those over 70 must self-isolate at home for up to four months to stop them getting the virus.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) says self-isolation is currently “the most effective way” of preventing the deadly bug from spreading.

Pensioners will have to remain in their homes, except for getting medical care, and not go to work, school or public areas.

They will need to ask for help if they require any shopping or medications - and call ahead before visiting a doctor.

Despite this, according to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps, the elderly will still be able to go out and walk their dogs during months of self-isolation.

When quoting Police action it's a pity that what's happening now is the exception is taken as the rule.
A law was passed in an attempt to prevent social gathering which as we know and have always known will spread the virus. The Police authorities interpret and apply it as they wish just as the do with most law I should add, so as is the norm you have hot heads going well OTT as they try keep law and order in their own way.

From what I'm hearing via the media and from those who serve on the force, the ticking off administered by Police chiefs who had their ears bent by the government has merely stiffened the resolve of those in blue on the front line.
The one thing I've learned over the years from dealings I've had with the Police as friends and neighbours is that the more you bite the harder they bite back. They will also lay their life down for you.

No, the government is very clear that self isolation and social distancing does not preclude exercise. No dog is necessary. Exercise is essential at all ages and the government have never said otherwise.

Neither of the advice pages below say that the over 70s cannot go out for exercise and all the medical advice is the opposite, they should maintain exercise. They can also go out for the other three approved reasons.

Brexit doesn't seem to inspire enthusiasm in the out of work

"‘Higher prices & potential food shortages’ Romanians arriving on 1st of 6 flights today. 36,000 Brits have registered but only 112 have accepted work. Is this going to change after Brexit? UK pickers aren’t prepared to get up at 5am & catch a bus. #bbcr4today

I think it's fairly clear now that it's not really about how well you can herd the populous inside, or indeed how effective a whack over the head from a coppers truncheon is, the real answer lies in testing. Look at South Korea as a good example, they seem to have a good handle on what's occurring plus it seems they were well prepared in the first place.

Indeed. Sadly our government continues to be ineffective, face masks for example. South Korea believed in their effectiveness, our government says they have no value for the general population, demonstrably untrue.

But the actual death rate much higher than the official number, so the 15.3% may not be much lower, as in Belgium where testing is finally being effectively rolled out, covid skills far more than original official estimates
I think there are many deaths being hidden. It wouldn’t surprise me if we have been consistently over 1000 casualties per day for some time. I also think there are many many times more people infected that have not been counted / reported due to the woeful testing. That will make the % of casualties lower, probably well under 10%. The only reliable statistic to give us a vague clue as to where this is heading, is number of people in hospital. Everything else is a moving target, there are no stable references. But that will change in 14 days when Handcock hits a regular 100000 tests per day.

Joke of the Day

"No.10 completely rules out Brexit transition extension, arguing the UK needs "the legislative and economic flexibility to manage the UK response to the coronavirus pandemic".

I agree with you , the laugh smiley was for the notion that Hancock hits the target.

Had to go out to deliver some health equipment today - about 30 minutes away.

Mostly a delight - so little traffic, lovely weather for driving.

But some idiots leaving far too small a gap and overtaking when totally unnecessary - and illegal. First one, I was doing a genuine 60 and he pulled across a large area of red tarmac/hatching/right turn lane/etc. and partially onto the oncoming lane to get past me. A few seconds later he'd have been able to get past safely, though still illegally.

I don’t know how anyone could be convinced that a face mask does not off any protection from cross infection.

I think the policy of not wearing face masks will have been derived as follows:

Q. How many face masks can we get?

A. About five million.

Q. How many would we need for everyone to wear them

A. About one hundred million.

Policy: Do not recommend the wearing of face masks.

Like PPE guidelines, it’s been worked backwards from what they can scrape together in a chaotic panic.

Were in uncharted territory, medically and existentially. Sweden doesn't have a lockdown, we have a lockdown with fines, south Africa's armed forces has practically killed more imposing a lockdown than Covid - it's a very large international experiment that will end in tears one way or another I fear. My problem with trusting the police isn't with the police - it's with who watches the watchers (to bring Juvenal into this). Its hard to think of anyone less trustworthy than the likes of raab, Hancock, patel, boris

Another day more utter BS
"The FT reports that ministers are expecting the return of their leader on May 7th, coinciding with announcements of an easing of lockdown restrictions ahead of the May 8 bank holiday and the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) day.

Farcical figures again from NHS England. Of the 740 deaths recorded in hospitals by NHS England - only151 occurred yesterday, 314 on 14 April, 122 on 13 April and 143 took place between 1 April and 12 April. The remaining 10 happened last month, some going back as far as 9 March! https://pic.twitter.com/qrKswRTv9X

The Government have clearly been advised by Cummings that incompetence in collating figures makes a very convenient smokescreen to hide the severity of the casualties from scrutiny, rather like the way axis countries reported defeats as victories during the WW2

You know it might even be true. Not many of the NK spend January skiing in Italy. ,Very few are jetsetting between NYC LA, , Venice, Madrid and London.
Any visits to China might not have allowed them access to Hubei over the critical time.

Not many countries to be fair have borders with minefields, searchlights and manned machine gun nests, naval and air patrols
We will have to wait for that till after Brexit.

This wonder ranks alongside the Iranian plywood stealth fighter and fancy dress astronaut suit... wonder what the Iranians are smoking.

The technology that enables detection of infected surfaces and diagnosis of those carrying the virus within a 100-meter radius in only five seconds was inaugurated in Tehran on Wednesday, in the presence of Major General Hossein Salami, the elite defense force’s chief commander.

The device, Salami explained, generates a magnetic field that screens its surroundings, and is fitted with an antenna that points in the direction of infected targets upon detecting them.

Describing its plus points, the commander said the technology eliminates the need for blood samples, can also be handled remotely from its targets, is suitable for mass screening purposes, and averts unnecessary disinfection processes.

The device enables “momentary” detection of the virus with 70- to 80-percent accuracy and has been tested throughout a 10-day-long period across at least 10 hospitals before being unveiled, Sharif said.
