Which part of the EU would prefer that the UK remained a fully functioning member is hard to understand?
Which part of the EU wanting the UK to leave on as favourable terms as possible and remaining as close as possible to the EU is hard to understand?
The UK has been legally free to leave since March 29th. ,But choose not to, because its Parliament revolted from a draft agreement crafted WITH the UK executive. They can leave tomorrow, (Actually they cannot because they signed a new contract valid till October).
The EU wants a deal.
The EU wants an assurance that whatever deal is struck, does not .
1. Impinge on the EXISTING rights of NI people, whether Protestant or Catholic to be free to retain their Irish citizenship, and hence EU citizenship..A right the UK agreed in the GFA.
2. That a formal hard border will not be placed ON the island of Ireland, which will flustrate that existing right.
3 . If the UK wants unfettered access to EU markets, it needs to agree other terms and conditions ..but that is another set of negotiations.
4. Unless the EU gets the type of assurances for 1and 2 , there is no transition period, there is no Withdrawal Agreement. and we go direct to step 3 , without interim access.

No I don't have your reference to Hannan but S.Bannons take is that unless the UK surrenders its foreign policy to US interests, there would be no US Trade deal..or have I misquoted him?.
You forgot to mention we have to surrender them to Israel too according to the documents from the American Negotiating team.

any deal will entail some reduction of freedom created by sharing the same EU SM framework.

The Northern Irish politicians react
"
The letter from Northern Ireland Assembly members to European Council president Donald Tusk states: “It is our view that the progress made in developing integrated and enduring relationships on this island, politically, economically and socially, over the last 20 years is far too important to abandon. Particularly at a moment when those relationships are being tested.”

“With that in mind, and with no functioning Executive or Assembly currently in place in Northern Ireland to give expression to the democratic wishes of people here, we write to you to confirm our support for the backstop contained within the Withdrawal Agreement and Political Declaration.

“It is our view that a legally operable guarantee to protect the Good Friday Agreement, maintain north-south co-operation and preserve the all-island economy and to prevent a return to physical infrastructure on our border or physical checks at or near the border is necessary to preserve the progress that we have made.”

Spoil my Brexit Day?
I shall watch with interest the the hugely successful and smooth transition, won't you?

Poor fingers, you haven't got the remotest notion of what is happening in the real world so resort to posting tripe .
But then we've had a lot of that on here, it pretty much sums up the leave supporters dilemna.
Nothing whatever to indicate that they are not as clueless after three years than they were on day one.
Imagine being naive enough to not merely trust Boris and his wind up imitation "Expert" Cummings, but to believe that this government (of all the billions on the planet) is capable of
A; Successfully handling Brexit
B; Successfully handling our future
C: Making this the best country in the world to live in.

Surely not a single soul in the country can believe that?

Even Chicken Little would call you a pessimist.

Whichever way you look at it, once brexit happens, NI will no longer be in the same duty and VAT area, anything crossing the border that has a tax element is going to be subjected to paperwork.

From the Daily Mirror
Emmanuel Macron punctures hopes of a 30-day Brexit deal in frosty talks with PM
France's President warned the Irish backstop is "indispensable" and any deal will not be "very different" as he met Boris Johnson in Paris
Don’t tell me this is news to you. What were you expecting from a treacherous, conniving, mean-spirited nation of saboteurs? France are irrelevant and will surrender to Germany in due course. What Merkel says will be the final word on the matter, Johnson just needs to work her.

I sense a change in Bojo's language and the ERG won't like it:

Bojo:
Today I met President @EmmanuelMacron in Paris. Let’s get Brexit done, sensibly and pragmatically and in the interests of both sides. Let’s get on with deepening and intensifying the friendship and the partnership between our nations.

The Pound rose 1% on the news.

Whichever way you look at it, once brexit happens, NI will no longer be in the same duty and VAT area, anything crossing the border that has a tax element is going to be subjected to paperwork.
But that is exactly the way it is at present.... The duty on cigarettes and petrol is different, and the registration tax on cars is totally different. There are different VAT rates on goods in shops .
Now I have been thinking about this a little and taking the parties at their word, that there will be no physical infrastructure on the border..
Goods flow into Ireland from Rotterdam and Roscoff and containers of them make their way up through to Newry and Belfast. They are not inspected at the Irish border ,if they come with EU certification. .. There are exceptions and tobacco and firearms are searched. According to the DUP, they will not be inspected at Belfast and 30 minutes later they are in Scotland and trundle their way South ..Manchester etc. Great for EU exporters, who can flog whatever they want to Tesco etc.. How Tesco deals with HMRC is Tescos problem, and if not Tesco then all those pound shops
Likewise the Poles are free to come to Ireland, with their EU passports, and they travel up to Belfast.. the Enterprise train service is a bit strained, but it still works. Once in Belfast they board the UK ferry to Liverpool . I selected Poles because they really look just like us...except better looking.
Now the reverse. In Ireland we have not said that we will not inspect goods. Quite the reverse. We have already earmarked a goods depo in Dublin Port, and are very capable of preparing for inspections.
Now our EU colleagues, will request that we also inspect goods going to mainland Europe..and we will of course do so. We can exempt anything coming from bonded suppliers in RoI ,but any suspect containers with UK transit or unfamiliar paperwork, will be examined. Our EU colleagues may even give us some funding for this..it is reasonable as they will be the beneficiaries. So this contraband just builds up, importers from the UK give up. This works because of the sizes of the markets. .
Bringing goods into a market of 66 million from a market of 500 million is a lot different than into a market of 6 million ,from one of 66 million.
Likewise all passengers to mainland Europe from Ireland go through passport control. ..Its part of our Travel Arrangements with the UK. So refugees or non visa holders from the UK cannot transit via Ireland.
How long do you think it will take the UK Government to insert passport and customs control at the NI ports?.
Ireland makes an excellent Diode. ..And that is Backstop in action.

Good isn't it?

I feel a sellout coming on, Boris dare not risk being held responsible for a disaster of his own making, time for plan B, fudge around the backstop, dress up Mays deal, then put it to a referendum.

And walk away extolling the "Will of the people" carrying no personal blame, whatever the result.
Win/win in the Boris universe

In highly-critical remarks on the eve of talks, the French president also said the UK would be the "main victim" of a hard Brexit, as he warned the cost would not be offset by a trade deal with the United States.

"Even if it were a strategic choice it would be at the cost of a historic vassalisation of the British state," Mr Macron said. "I don't think that is what Boris Johnson wants."

Sounds like wise words and a reality check for BJ and UK population from French Pres.

More on the so called "Technological Solution"
"
A report was drawn up by the Alternative Arrangements Commission, a panel established by the Prosperity UK think tank.

That commission, led by senior Tories Greg Hands and Nicky Morgan, produced a 268-page report in July which recommended a series of administrative and technological measures.

Under their plans special “enhanced economic zones” could straddle the border between Londonderry and Donegal and possibly also Newry and Dundalk, with tax breaks and a free trade zone to avoid duties.

If the regimes on plant and animal regulations diverge, mobile units could be used to carry out sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) checks away from the border.

Trusted trader regimes would allow firms to cut down on paperwork and potentially avoid routine customs checks at the border.

What a load of old cobblers!
Enhanced economic Zones? come off it!
Border posts by another name.

Why doesn't someone remind Boris that what was offered by the leave campaign was remaining in the Customs Union and the Single Market? and if we can't have that say No Brexit?
What the heck are we going ahead with this lunacy for?
