why can't Labour accept that there is no withdrawal deal without a backstop guarantee for NI?
I can answer that. Quite simple really.
Labour's red lines are constructed from a grade of "Knicker elastic" that won't adequately deal with having to be stretched to extent required for this "ambitious new flexible and scalable relationship that allows us to combine resources worldwide for maximum impact."
Without the inherent danger of suddenly snapping when under stress producing an embarrassing public scene due to a rather comical wardrobe malfunction of the proverbial "knicker dropping" variety.
Plus of course to have a "Backstop" would require a pair of braces, not an easy modification to a party which presently more resemble Nora Batty's Baggy Bloomers that something more glamorous like a thong.

I went to change the address on my ID card at the prefecture this morning. An English lady was next to me and trying to get a resident card, it went something like this:

Bureaucrat - you need to give us a bank statement to prove you have enough money to live in France
Lady - but I am self employed I can show you bills!
Tony - :rolleyes:
Lady - I'll be able to show you a bank balance in January
All the bureaucrats behind the counter - Oh la la!!! January will be too late!
Tony - scratches head, WTF is happening concerning French resident cards for English people in January?

interesting poll, if the second referendum is called.
the middle question is a little surprising. No deal beats remain by 52/48 while unsurprisingly remain beats May's deal by 56/44 and yet May's deal beat no deal by 58/42.
If May's deal beats no deal and remain beats May's deal, you would expect that remain would beat no deal. No wonder brexit is a mess.

A very odd view for a person who makes out he is both a federalist and socialist.
Totally disagree with you flecc. Any firm can cope with granting maternity leave. If they can't they shouldn't be in business, big or small.
A person's career spans 35/40 years, having one out for having a child is going to have little effect. It's an excuse to carry on old fashioned dogma. At what point in your argument does maternity leave become acceptable. 500 employees? A thousand.? By your reasoning no women of child bearing age would be employed. Think you are stuck in 50,s flecc. Time to move on. Get organised, efficient and expect people to do same.
Yes, it might be an inconvenience and comes at a cost to our capitalist way of thinking.. But so what.. Or perhaps your business owner should roll up in his flash car and sack all women between 16 and 40..Think you are stuck in victorian times, never mind 50's.
Why the gross exaggerations? No, some very small firms cannot cope, the government has set 4 employees as the level, but it can vary slightly. Some with two can cope, some with several might not be able to due to different specialisations. The great majority of companies have no problem.

I'm not speaking of hypotheticals but from experience of employing staff in widely varying numbers in differing jobs. For example in one job over a decade my 24 direct staff controlling over 200 others were a mix of both genders but always more female than male. Not by design, just employed on grounds of suitability and one being away was never a problem due to the structure I instituted.

But in contrast another job, despite my having a number of manual staff only had two office staff doing similar jobs. Both were salaried females and on equal pay of course, fitting with your concept of fairness, but it was very far from fair. One was married with a child and needed to take numerous days or part days off for various doctor, school and other reasons. Later there were marital difficulties which led to more absences.

That not only thrust a larger workload onto the other member but also my having to fill in as well instead of doing what I should have been. That's what your concept of fairness leads to, considerable unfairness with the two office staff carrying very unequal workloads over time but for equal pay since you want that as well. If replacing that married person at any time of course I'd aim for a single mature person since I'd be an idiot not to. That's horses for courses, the right tool for the job, and nothing to do witn unfair discrimination or outdated attitudes.

In the latter you are being insulting since I brought modern practices well ahead of their time to three different old fashioned companies. That included everyone at all levels being on first name terms instead of Sir and Ma'am being used, also getting rid of separate management and staff toilets that I found in two companies, also getting rid of discriminatory clock cards and weekly employments. There was never anything old fashioned about any of my employment of people and two of my former manual employees are close friends to this day despite it being 28 years since I last employed them both. One even sends me a birthday card* every year, how many ex bosses can say that!

*That originates in my practice of birthday and Christmas cards for my employees, a small personal touch. Hardly Dickensian.

Flecc. Maternity leave and pay is in our law. Arguing against it is ridiculous. It's a hard earned right not a benefit at all.
Some poorly organised business unable to meet the requirents does not justify it not happening or knocking it.
And there is no cost involved for employer if they know what they are doing...
Its simply a logistical problem around having modern training practices in place. If it affects a business its there own fault. We never had issues, either in education or in my charter involvement.Yes, it can be frustrating but ultimately employees rights, happiness and companies long term success is far more important. Its all about equal opportunity and getting right staff in right positions and not short term convenience.
You represent the exact attitudes that started this discussion. It's called sexism flecc.

You really do wear blinkers, either you haven't read my posts or don't understand what's written. It's not about money, only about practicality as it affects certain smallest businesses. Nor is it about the maternity law that I'm well aware of. It's about who one employs and the law supports my position for those same practical reasons.

But this ends this discussion, I'm not prepared to argue with someone on a PC pedestal who is incapable of being rational.

Theresa May has for the first time admitted that a second referendum is possible if her deal is turned down. Meanwhile Labour have moved closer to that position too, so we may yet get a chance to vote again.

The sooner the better.

I've long criticised Theme Park Britain and it's obsession with history that limits it's capacity to catch up with the rest of the modern world.

But now we're getting something backward enough to fit Brexit Britain perfectly, a Vintage Trains company that will be running scheduled steam services on the rail network in competition with other rail companies.

Set up by a woman (Zlatan please note), permission has been obtained and they'll be operating in the West Midlands and surrounding areas initially but with ambitions to spread much wider.

Lady .. was being either obtruse ,untrue, or very lazy. She can get a bank statement from her bank at any time. Indeed she can get her current balance instantly. And if she is self employed, she has her statements of tax and income from previous years, and or her accountants
