Yet more cost - financial and in many other ways - of brexit:

Metropolitan police rush to set up no-deal Brexit 'safety net unit'

Exclusive: £2.4m unit set up after warnings over loss of access to EU policing tools

A “no deal safety net unit” is being rushed through by Scotland Yard at a cost of more than £2.4m after police chiefs warned the home secretary that losing EU tools would make it harder to track sex offenders and terrorist suspects, according to internal police documents.

The initial cost to the taxpayer was subsequently inflated by £250,000 to allow the new unit to rent an office near parliament after the Metropolitan police said it did not have the space given the large size of the team. Discussions are ongoing about the extent of the running costs to the taxpayer should the UK crash out in March.

I wouldn't bet on this. NI is used by both sides to justify their negotiating stance until a deal is concluded.
At the end of the transition, unless the UK reverses brexit, there will be a land border between the EU and the UK in NI. It is up to each side to police their territory. Both sides can of course unilaterally decide not to implement physical checks.
Sorry, Woosh, as I see it there will be no transition period as that implies a deal. There will be , no deal, No DEAL, ,unless the UK comes up with satisfactory legal guarantees to give substance to the undertakings they, unde the name of your Prime Minister, gave on two separate occasions a year ago.

If that means a land border, then it means a land border, but it also means that any of the other undertakings by the British side, have no credibility.

There is little reason to expect that Mr Barnier would bring an incredible proposal to the EU Parliament for ratification.

With Dr Merkel losing influence, there will be less capability for finessing another fudge at the Council of Ministers..

A geo-engineering solution could be to immediately start digging an epic canal barrier on a scale of the Suez and Panama Canal to physically seperate Northern Ireland from Irish Republic -
And in England we had the Royal Military Canal in Kent to keep Napoleon and French from occupying England by invasion. Apparently the French can't jump over ditches.

Brits don’t want to work on farms – so who will pick fruit after Brexit?

Just one per cent of farm workers are British. Most currently come from Eastern Europe, but with the end of free movement, British growers could have to look even further for labour

An Aussie friend commented "Australians. All the brits are over here working on our farms." Great idea - ship back Aussie convincts in our hour of need to save the day.

Also added > "A recruitment campaign such as "Your country needs you" or "Digging for victory" should do the trick. Brexiteers will be falling over each other."

Didn`t someone tell you it was a UK wide vote?

Get over it - you Lost - deal with it!
In time, you just might come to realise that the whole UK lost.

Even if leaving the EU were, by some miracle, seen to be "a good thing", the way it has been handled, rather mis-handled, will result in an awful lot of bad things.

You get over it, you lost in your own home of Northern Ireland.

And you are premature in saying I lost, the UK is very likely to be remaining in the EU in all but name. On April the first next year you may find Brexit was nothing other than an April fools joke.

I suggest that the EU will force the ROI to accept some sort of wording to confirm the good intentions of all sides in the withdrawal agreement toward keeping the border free and unmanned but eventually, if and when there is a trade deal concluded during or shortly after the end of the transition, the backstop will be superseded by that trade deal, and if there is no further deal, the UK will leave on WTO and then, the backstop won't be worth the paper it's written on.

It must have been all the potato harvesting.
.
Not very far wrong. It was the diet of potatoes, and buttermilk ,and livinglin iving in rural surroundings which gave them the strong bones ,which allowed them to dramatically outperform English town dwelling natives, who suffered from rickets from inadaquete vitimin D. .. An Irish Navvy could outperform 5 towndwellers.. The rickets reduced the lung capacity so even if they were willing, they were not able.

Local to me we have one of the biggest carrot farms in the country and you are right most of the people that work there are Polish.
They are all on minimum wage and zero hours contracts. If it rains he sends them home without pay. If a machine breaks down he sends them home without pay. He owns most of the houses nearby and rents them back to the
Polish workers (half a dozen adults in one house) Do you blame British
workers for not wanting jobs under these conditions ?
The only workers on full time contracts are the fitters and Electricians, He treats them ok because he has to.
He treats the Polish workers like crap because he can.

Do you not appreciate that it is now gone down to the wire. ?. It is for the UK side to propose acceptable wording and legal guarantees. When the dust settles RoI will still be inside the EU, so don't underestimate the importance the EU will attribute to continuity.

Maybe we could ask Putin if he could lend us any spare vacationing military personnel that aren't tied up in Ukraine, Syria or gazing up at the 123-metre spire of Salisbury Cathederal...

Armed Forces: Recruits don't need to have lived in Britain

More foreign nationals living abroad will be able to join the Armed Forces, the government is to announce.

Currently, only 200 Commonwealth citizens per year can apply without having lived in the UK for five years.

But in a bid to recruit more servicemen and women to the Army, Navy and Air Force, the Ministry of Defence is lifting this cap.

The Armed Forces is short of 8,200 soldiers, sailors and air personnel, a report found earlier this year.

It is the worst shortage since 2010, said the independent government watchdog, the National Audit Office.

Ministers are expected to announce the change to recruitment rules on Monday.

It means people from Commonwealth countries - including India, Australia, Kenya, Fiji and Sri Lanka - will be considered for roles, even if they have never lived in Britain....

...Mark Francois, who spent a year meeting with MoD officials as well as military personnel, said there was a "perfect storm" of high employment rates and an ageing population with fewer people of military age.

And still tommie doesn't understand, even when an explanation a five year old could grasp has been given.
A clear sign of losing an argument is when as zlatan has pointed out you resort to childish immature personal insults.......... however as this is the Losers thread i understand your confusion and frustration.

In future i`ll take the advice of the inimitable George Carlin,

“Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

No - the EU absolutely does NOT want a hard border. It is just the natural, logical consequence of brexit. Which was, so we are told, the choice of the UK population.
But not (apart from a few DUP oddballs and their supporters) the choice of Northern Ireland?
How very odd
