Well,now today's "Bread and Circuses" distraction is over,with the usual baloney that even managed to resurrect the ghost of "Princess Di" in the minds of those gullible enough to sentimentally wallow in such things, what are we to be offered next as a Brexit debacle smoke and Mirrors cloaking device?
Anyone care to speculate?

The UN was crippled at the outset by the USA. All other countries wanted it to be based in Switzerland to be truly neutral, but the USA insisted it would have to be in their country or they wouldn't support it.

And ever since they've flexed their muscles over it, for example having never paid a cent of their UNESCO dues since 2011 as a protest against Palestine being admitted as a member of the UN. Israel also predictably stopped paying then, and some others have joined the fee dues refuseniks, including the UK. The USA alone owes UNESCO over half a billion dollars.

That was not quite my understanding. The story I heard tell was that Rockafeller, who was very much of the God Fearing Christian mentality , was so enthused by the prospects for world peace that the UN offered , that he offered and gave the land freely . He was also a NY benefactor , and of course wanted it on his own front garden.
The fatal flaw that the UN had from its inception was the right of VETO by any of the victors of WW2, comprising the Security Council inner circle.

Whether Rockefeller gave the land or not is immaterial, the facts were as I stated, that the majority preference was Switzerland, overridden by the USA as a condition of their membership. It was a parallel of the situation with the League of Nations pre WW2. That was based in Geneva, Switzerland and the USA refused to join it.

As with all the projects the USA has joined in with Europe, they demand control and walk out if they can't get their own way. Ever the big bully.

My overriding memory of yesterday's big event is that it turned out to be a good game of football but Jose Mourinho will recognise that a couple of his big-money stars really aren't delivering for the team.

Chelsea, on the other hand, played to their strengths and kept their shape with everyone defending when required. Antonio Conte has got his team well-organised and although there is much speculation about his future, he has done enough to demonstrate that he is a top coach.

It may be revisionist, but my source was the very ernest young guide at the Rockefeller buildings in New York. He was much too young to have been a party to the discussions..... As indeed am I. He also provided additional information on other things that Rockefeller jnr did which lends credence to his strong religious ethos, often to the annoyance of his wife, who was much into the liberal arts..
Remember he was at that time the richest person on earth, having an inheritance and a stake in all the oil business, then also commercial radio and TV and airlines...
So whatever other US interests may later have affected the UN , don't assume his interest was other than alturistic. He had sufficient clout with US administration that diplomatic immunity would be granted to the zone ...

The USA still hasn't let up on this issue. Although the rest of the world gave in with the UN building, they did get their own way with both UNESCO and the UNHCR, the former in Paris and the latter in Geneva.

The USA shows its dislike of this by frequently not paying their dues, justified by constantly attacking both organisations with propaganda, alleging corruption and mismanagement without any evidence given. In 2011, angered by the UN admitting Palestine as a UN member against Israeli and US policy, they used this as an excuse to permanently stop paying into UNESCO for its good work, and in 2017 they and Israel withdrew from UNESCO membership.

Meanwhile they are steadily reducing their refugee resettlement program for the UNHCR, Europe taking up the slack, and their partner Israel now showed to be racially discriminating in acceptance of Jews into Israel. It seems black Jews no longer qualify.

Your information is slightly wrong, he was not PM at the time, but minister for justice, and both he and Blamey were sacked by Jack Lynch who was. Secondly they had not actually got the guns but were negociating for import licences that was foiled by the police and Irish army intelligence, and thirdly the IRA did not exist as a force viable or otherwise until later, . The IRA at that stage were the tired old men of 1956. It was the ham fisted approach of the RUC aand particularly the B Specials ( for UK readers a militia linked to the official police , ) which acted as the recruiting agent.
The guns were proposed as defense against murderous mobs intent on burning out Catholic or Nationists,. The peace gates, the burnt out streets were not fictional. You might recall that slightly earlier there were groups gathering at the dundalk barracks looking for guns, and there were refugee camps set up here in the south.
But a spotless character of Charlie is certainly an understatement... His liki ng for the fancy life while insisted that we were living beyond our means!!!.

And why? A few billion for the submarines, a couple more for the the spy satellites (assuming the RAF will not be using recycled Spitfire bits and bobs to make them), hey this brexit lark could be getting a wee bit expensive could it not?
