taxis are public transport. Without taxis, there will be more cars on our roads.
Where I live, the nearest bus stop is 2 1/2 miles away, and the nearest park and ride for the city is 7 miles. I am the only person in the neighborhood who uses either facility, and I am considered weird for doing so. There is an ever increasing amount of cars, especially in urban areas because "healthy" people are lazy and stupid. Why (like some of my surrounding neighbour's) would you struggle through gridlock, pay £6 + for a parking space, when you can park your range rover all day and get a return bus fare for £1.60 inclusive, or if you are over 60, completely free. For me, the bus is a great convenience, for others, sitting in traffic in their "bubble of selfishness" is a convenience, and travelling by bus, beneath their "class".

Environment Secretary Michael Gove has been asked to attend a meeting of the European Commission in Brussels, to explain why the UK still breaches legal air pollution limits.

Britain is one of the five member states that have received a “final warning” from the commission after persistently surpassing limits for nitrogen dioxide levels.

The meeting which is set to take place at the end of the month, will be an opportunity for Mr Gove and other European politicians to discuss air quality and how to protect “a basic quality of life” for European citizens.
Experts have estimated air pollution kills 50,000 people annually in the UK alone.

Last year the nation was warned it would face a European Court of Justice case if the nitrogen dioxide problem was not dealt with.

Of course after Brexit we can feel free to pollute and be damned, no doubt a case of the "Goodness will flow"
Regaining Sovereignty is a great "get out of jail free" card for an incompetent administration, isn't it?
It's actually another word for shirking and dodging responsibility.
Hardly a Brexit induced problem. The UK will be joined at the meeting by Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Romania, Hungary, The Czech Republic and Slovakia. Seems more like an EU issue.

You talk about shirking responsibility: The Germans have contributed to this problem with their lies and deceit over VW emissions. What have the EU done about? What have they done to deal with the German scam? Errr nothing. No change, situation normal.

Was just discussing park and ride and buses. To get to Tenby is an hour and a half on a bus. Against 40 minutes by car using the slowest route offered by Google.

The choice ends up spending an inordinate time on the trip if using the bus, having parking problems if using the car, or - what we actually do - pretty much never go there.

Park and Ride would be a huge advantage and we would be very pleased to have that as an option.

And you are going to guarantee things will get better after Brexit? the UK Government will change somehow?

That's extraordinarily brave of you.
Things may well have been bad in the EU, but they will be infinitely worse when profit is the only reason for change.
The EU hasn't done anything positive against the carmakers, but has done this
courtesy of the Guardian
"
The European Union has moved towards cracking down on carmakers who cheat emissions tests by giving the EU executive more powers to monitor testing and impose fines.

The European council overcame initial objections from Germany and agreed to try to reform the system for approving vehicles in Europe in the wake of the Volkswagen emissions scandal.
The draft now goes for negotiations with the European commission and the European parliament, where the car industry holds a strong influence.

“Above all, the objective is building trust and credibility again in the European type-approval system,” said Chris Cardona, the economy minister of Malta, which holds the EU’s six-month rotating presidency.

The VW emissions scandal erupted in September 2015, with the carmaker admitting it had installed software defeat devices in 11m diesel cars worldwide, meaning the vehicles only cut their nitrogen oxide pollution during certification tests.

The draft EU rules call for reducing the power of national authorities and empowering the European commission to test and inspect vehicles, to ensure compliance with emissions standards, and to respond to any irregularities.

“This will increase the independence and quality of the EU type-approval system,” the council said in a statement.

“The commission could also impose fines for infringements on manufacturers and importers of up to €30,000 [£26,000] per noncompliant vehicle.”

Under the draft rules, every EU country will be required to check emissions in one in every 50,000 new vehicles based on real driving conditions.

The commission and member states have come under fire for allowing carmakers to utilise a long list of exceptions and loopholes when being checked for pollutants.

Its research unit noted discrepancies in emission testing results depending on whether they were done on laboratory simulators or on the road as far back as 2013.

In other words VW and the others too have too much influence for Governments to tackle them, and ours will be the weakest of the lot after Brexit, any car maker will walk all over them.
They won't be pushing the car makers, only the EU will do that.

IIRC we have been down this road before...

The EU has organised a meeting, that is what they have done. As for sanctions that is a national government problem not a EU one. Sovereignty old chum, sovereignty...

Did you notice that all of those countries going to the meeting and not enforcing pollution norms with sanctions have factories where diesel cars are made? ;)

From the Mirror a little light comedy for a change
"
Donald Trump tells anti-abortion rally 'women giving birth in NINTH month of pregnancy is WRONG and has to change'
The US president made the perplexing statement during a 'March for Life' rally outside the White House on Friday"

Should be interesting to see what the genius proposes to change it!

No doubt he meant to say Abortions in the ninth month of Pregnancy are wrong, but suffered yet another slip of the tongue or rather the Brain.
How long can this strange individual continue as allegedly the most powerful man on the planet before he commits some dangerously damaging mistake?

The US economy and growth in employment both seem to be fine. OK, he mixed his words up in the abortion statement, big deal. No one in the history of mankind has ever made a verbal mistake before?

Lately I use my E bike for all trips into the town where my wife isn't accompanying me, as it is quicker and cost free to ride in.
The cheap Viking Eco bike is ideal for this as it has a lockable battery and electrical system, a carrying basket that is removable on the handlebars, and its odd step through frame doesn't seem attractive to the local feral youths.
When parked it is easily chained to cycle stands to deter casual thieves, who anyway rather look down on this as a "trashy design"
More and more of these bottom of the market cheap machines of a variety of makes are appearing in Hull because they are so convenient.
I have now had it for four years and sent away in December to BMS Battery for a new and heavier rated "little frog 24 volt battery" as 24 volts looks like becoming obsolete, my battery still seems OK, but it must surely ge going downhill after all this time and thousands of miles, hence I am getting a new one (if it ever arrives)
It has been a far better machine than I had any reason to expect when the original price was so low.
There were problems with cheap tryres, but Shwalbe Marathon Plus tyres give excellent services in local use.

They are doing fine apart from the Government shutting down, a minor detail of course!
And his verbal mistakes outnumber the times he gets things right.

They need a better Ventriloquist than Steve Bannon with his hand up the rear entrance working the moving parts.

Read my post again. I said the Germans were preparing for war. We were not. Had we been perhaps Germans would not have gone to war.
Andrew Knighton has written an excellent book on topic. (7 reasons why UK was not prepared for war in 1939)
This is a very short extract.

"In retrospect, the outbreak of the Second World War seems both obvious and inevitable. However, to many people at the time, particularly in Britain, there was a reason for doubt. The country went into the war unprepared, for a whole host of reasons."

" If you want peace ,prepare for war"

The statement applies as much now, probably more, than ever.
What would Kim Jong be doing now if he didn't know his aggression could lead to his own countries total annihilation ? He,d be sat in Paris , eating Croissant as Hitler did. ( Well South Korea anyway)
The Americans balancing power with Russia and China is fine by me.
And , there was no need for the rubbish comment. Its my opinion. Its not rubbish.

Hitler intended war come what may, and there is not way any army we could come up with in peace time would prevent that.
This is a truer assessment made at the time

In 1939 the French Army was widely considered the best in the world. Notably, France outnumbered Germany in tanks, planes, and just about everything else. Its equipment was top-of-the-line and was in most cases equal to or better than what the Germans had. However, the French military suffered from poor leadership, poor morale and outdated doctrine.

Germany: Contrary to popular belief, the Wehrmacht in 1939 was materially quite poorly off. Its equipment was decent enough, though the French had better, but it was otherwise fairly unremarkable, and it was quite lacking in tanks, planes and so forth. It did, however, have excellent leadership, high morale and better doctrine than anyone realized at the time, even the Germans themselves.

Soviet Union: The Red Army was the largest in the world in 1939 and even in 1941 the USSR had more planes, tanks, men, et al. than Germany. However, it was poorly equipped compared to France and Germany, and terribly lead, mostly thanks to Stalin killing almost every military leader with half a brain. Its abysmal performance against Finland was a testament to this.

Makes a mockery of your theory, doesn't it?

No, not at all. Read the book OG.
Being prepared for war is not just a material issue. Germans with help of Heinz Guderian had developed modern way of utilising tanks/ blitzkrieg ( A brilliant book) We had stopped development of tank and cut funding tto RAF. ( The Spitfire and Merlin engine were initiated in private funding, with those individuals responsible knowing government was making massive blunder)

The French were over evaluated at the time. Yes, we had more tanks ( overall) but
A) We spread them all over place
B) Individually they were no match for the German ( actually Czechoslovakian) tanks.

We were not at all prepared for WW2. And had Hitler / Goering not stopped Guderian's tanks short of Dunkerque ( Goering wanted kudos of finishing off BEF and in ensuing confusion with help from privately backed Spitfire) we managed to not lose the war.

You obviously dont know what you are talking about with WW2.

Heinz Guderian told Hitler he had 12 months to win the war. After that their own superiority would be lost. Dont forget at this stage the Germans and Russians were on same side. Hitler broke his agreement with Stalin. When Hitler first attacked Russia Stalin refused to believe it was the Germans.( Churchill had been telling him all along but he thought Churchill was lying)

Hitlers plan was to keep peace with Russia untill France / UK invaded. Then turn on Russia. The Spitfire caused hum a headache with UK ( over Dunkerque and in BoB) so he turned on Russia early.

It could easily have been different. The scenario is often put into war simulation programs. 95% of time Germany invades Uk. Had Guderian been held in same regard as Goering by Hitler, we would all be speaking German. Fact.

if you can't wait for the bus, what then?
Taxis are shared transport. More people will use it in place of buses if it's cheaper. Driverless taxis can reduce the size, weight and operating cost. More availability can also reduce the non-productive portion of their mileage.

"" If you want peace ,prepare for war"
Would not have made the slightest difference
I was disagreeing with you, and any theory by anyone that had we rearmed in 1938/9 we could have prevented the second world war.
What's that got to do with what came after it?
We haven't prepared for war since than on any scale that could be considered other than pitiful have we?
The effect of the Armed Forces we have are unimportant compares to those of the superpowers

Once again you demonstrate your ignorance.
Not so, it is a subject i have studied extensively.
The RAF had the best organised and most modern integrated Air defence in the world in 1940, so we were in fact prepared to defend the country.

the French Char B tanks were far better armed and armoured than anything Germany possessed for instance.
You flatter yourself

Indeed!
Did you see that Norway is expecting to have electric powered airliners in the next twenty years?
Won't happen & can't happen. I can't see how it is possible to carry the amount of energy required to sustain electrically powered flight on the scale of commercial air transport. The energy storage would be too heavy, too dangerous and provide inadequate range.
