Because the EU is actually more democratic than the UK is, and if anyone doesn't understand how it works, its ignorance and the UK is to blame for a lack of education on the way the EU works, because everyone in the European parliament is elected, just like our one.
I think that one of the failings of the EU is its inability to communicate about what it does. Full page ads in the papers for example. There is a show about the EU on Arte but only snobby culture loving leftist intellectuals like myself watch Arte... The show is both critical of things being done wrong and promotional of those being done right so a reasonable balance.

No, I didn't think you were, I accepted that you were just reporting the events factually.

Germany and Austria have always had their racists as WW2 showed in a horrific manner, and they reared their heads again following the war in protest against the Turks being brought in. They were to staff their factories due to the shortage of Germans to do the work and have very fully integrated.

There were well over 3 million of those Turks, so the current acceptance of a million refugees shouldn't be a problem. But clearly some Germans don't want to accept any foreigner as the rise of their far right shows.
.
If you want a top three of xenophobia in Europe I give you:

1. Austria, the birth place of you know who
2. Switzerland, where it is covered in chocolate or should that be hypocrisy
3. The UK, damn it! You didn't make first place again, always runner up or in third place

I may be wrong but there are European countries I haven't visited and peoples I haven't worked with. I guess the Austrians and the Hungarians have ties that go back to their Empire days so they may be on equal footing?

I see the Hungarians are going to detain all immigrants until they have had asylum claims checked. Wonder if there will be demonstrations in cities around the world over that. Maybe if Trump did it??

Yes, the UK in general does earn a place, but I live in a very different part of the UK and where I was born, London. Here we are like a different country, where attitudes often present elsewhere in the UK are very alien to most of us.

I think Germany might well be higher up the xenophobia ranking than the UK, if it weren't for their embarrassing recent history inhibiting their free expression. But the feelings are very much there underneath, as Zlatan's encounter quite possibly shows.

Its your reaction the idiotic pathetic poster craves. If such comments were given the attention they deserved and treated with contempt rather than sensationalism the fools would have no soap box . They do it for reaction and in hope they will detract from the actual message. I,m not saying we should merely ignore it, but we certainly should not generalise.
Its high time twitter,Facebook and to an extent even this forum should take some responsibility. The post should not even reach publication, the poster should be banned, as should any promoting bigotry, racism or threat.
Unfortunately we live in a time where the number of hits is king. If the comment generates traffic its fine. We have seen it on here and its encouraged. Our criticism should be at the systems that allow it, well actually promote it.
So Trump and Farage, and their ilk should be "banned" when they open their gobs...

Hungarians historically have a thing against Muslims as they had their battles with em during the days of the Ottoman Empire when it came up into Europe via Turkey. They did bacon sarnie tests on suspected Muslim migrants many moons ago, if they ate it they could stay, and if not they were turfed out. Funnily enough the Hungarians developed a taste for the sweet pastries originating originally from the Middle East.

You will obey!
"

Britain will not seek further talks with the European Union if parliament rejects the exit deal it reaches, the government said in a statement on Tuesday, as ministers resisted pressure to give MPs more say on the terms of the final agreement.

The statement, which echoes Prime Minister Theresa May's stance that "no deal is better than a bad deal," came as parliament debated a law that would give her the power to begin exit negotiations with the EU.

Last month, May promised to ask parliament to approve the final exit terms, but said that even if it rejected the deal, Britain would leave the EU, raising concern among some MPs that their vote would be purely symbolic."

The "Will of the People" has been subverted and comes down to being at the mercy of
the Will of ONE WOMAN
Congratulations at throwing away democracy for a Dictatorship must go to the Brexit Voters.
But she's giving you a choice; something gained by herself and the three stooges, or no deal at all.
Really it's difficult to choose which is worse!
Anyone care to guess what will happen? here's mine

The EU will dictate it's terms, which TM will present as a "Magnificent Achievement" by her in the Face of an "intransigent" EU.

But just in case the defeat by the EU will be strung out for two years to make it look like something constructive has been achieved on our behalf.

Thought posters might just set their sights higher rather than emulate those they claim to scorn ??

And what are you suggesting, complete disregard for others, insult and patronise all those that disagree , ?? Where do you draw line ?? A few assaults or riots might be ok ?

The Washington Post has this today
"
President Trump said the media in many cases "doesn't want to report on" terrorism, speaking to senior U.S. military commanders and coalition representatives on Feb. 6 at MacDill Air Force Base in Florida. (The Washington Post)
“You’ve seen what happened in Paris, and Nice. All over Europe, it’s happening,” he said to the assembled military leaders. “It’s gotten to a point where it’s not even being reported. And in many cases the very, very dishonest press doesn’t want to report it. They have their reasons, and you understand that.”
A list was published that had been obtained from Newspapers..
Ha, Ha,Ha.

You really do not understand when someone is mocking you, do you?
Remember, when you want to make a fool of yourself there are people only too willing to help., and rather hilariously it goes right over your head!

Ever heard of Ellis Island?

Ellis island was primarily a public health facility. In the days before antibiotics, scarlet fever, whooping cough, diphtheria, were all contagious and likely to cause epidemics. The USA was not seeking to limit ingress, they were interested in growing their population. The visitor centre on the island makes that clear.
