ok, here is a question. I wonder is someone with more time than me cares to work out the answer.

We've benefited from free trade with the EU now for a number of years. We've paid in membership of this club.

So my question, because I've not seen this answered anywhere is:

How much have we saved as UK Public in not paying tariffs / handling fees on the 53% of goods imported into the UK because of the free trade agreement?

Now the cynic in me (whilst riding last night) was thinking... has the UK government just gone from paying out fees to EU, to get free trade (ie saving business and ultimately the public money)... now gone to a situation where they will be collecting tariff fees on all the imports (we're not going to stop importing from the EU clearly). So they'll be saving the membership and now pocketing essentially a new tax that will come from the public that they voted for?

For me personally, taking into account my financial arrangements, my business and my employment, I think that financially, I will be about the same and my business could well become much easier to administer.

So to answer your question and with all things considered, I think I will have a richer lifestyle, but that doesn't necessarily mean more hard cash. Richer, encompasses many things.

Actually we do...staying out of Euro and ERM has helped us a great deal, and made removing ourselves from the EU a little easier.

Colin....exactly what I said a week ago,she can collect 10% tariff on every German car imported into the UK and also politically argue that she is protecting UK industry by keeping the tariffs on Asian supplied product as well,and we wouldnt really notice it.
The only downside is our products sold into the EU would be subject to tariff but that wont bother the government only bother export business....

That assumes that the half that think its rubbish even know what it does. Personally I think its safe to say most don't have a clue what the Single Market does. I sell bikes to over 400 shops and most of them voted leave. Not a single one I've spoken to understands the single market and its benefits.

They won't know what it did, until its not doing it and the products they buy increase in price and take longer to arrive, and if they want to post an item to France its suddently going to be as much hassle as posting to the USA

I remember well how messy it was selling electronics to French shops in the early 70s (still was until the single market) .

May is taking the easy route by pretending the intractable EU is forcing a hard Brexit on her.
She is fully aware that none of the things she wants and even threatens for is achievable, so now that objective is just for show.
Walk away empty handed, get a sympathy vote from the Brexit voters, as you can kid them with anything.
It's a win-win situation for her, no real plan needed
