Brexit, for once some facts.

Which British companies will benefit from this influx of cash? that wouldn't yield a bigger return if the money went to the Far East?
The U.K. is attractive to outside investment and since we are talking about the car industry, let's stick to that. Staff cost at Nissan, Land Rover, Toyota & Mini and the others is now less. It's cheaper to manufacture here than it was. Good?

Not constantly talking down the UK and obsessively seeking out any negative, no matter how tenuous, would be a good start.

As for a scrappage scheme? I can think of a few candidates.
Not avoiding facing the reality of the difficulties we face and attempting to understand the situation we have created would be an even better place to start, every part of the Brexit dream is nothing more than tenuous is it?
No plan, and having the "Three Stooges" control affairs, hardly equals a pragmatic approach does it?
And your flippant answer to the Scrappage scheme suggestion shows the typical not wanting to look at anything practical that this whole Brexit Charade reeks of.

Great! now we need to have them selling the cars to a reluctant public, hence my suggestion of reviving the Scrappage scheme for older cars.
Just one small fly in the ointment, it now costs more for the parts imported from the EU for people like Vauxhall

But that argument could have been used pre-BREXIT. If anything, BREXIT has narrowed the gap.

Did someone mention Nissan?

I see Carlos Gohsn is using Brexit to put pressure on the Government to give better terms to his Nissan factory in Sunderland.

I don't blame the guy, but Brexit is no disaster to him, it's an opportunity.

As a businessman, he's not on here bleating about Brexit, his only concern is to make some money from it.

And Nissan has not been shy of using its influence in the past.

Why pay to build your own factory when you can get someone else - the Government - to pay for a lot of it?

Fleet sales are up 5%, private down 6%. The fleet market accounts for 60% of all cars sold, so overall, sales slightly up.

If it costs GM more to make those expensive EU components in their Opel factory, maybe some of that production will find its way to the UK?

Actually he didn't say anything new did he? and no mention of getting the Government to pay for anything.
Have you some info from somewhere else to support your statement? there wasn't any in the BBC report, but perhaps there is another source?
He made it sound as if he is expecting free access to the EU market.
Exactly the same as he said before.

Can you explain to me how you think its an opportunity?

If we stay in the single market, then yes the decline in the value of the £ will make his cars cheaper, but that's the exact reason why Germany/France will be pushing for a tariff, because they'll want to ensure EU cars are sold to EU customers, or they'll want Nissan moving into the EU.

I've read that something like 80% of the cars they produce are exported to the EU..... so if we leave the single market and a tariff is imposed, they will no longer be able to compete with the cars that are made inside the EU?

So where is the opportunity? That isn't to the detriment of the UK

Nissan negotiated various concessions to build their new European factory in the UK, not least they were all but given the site, a former RAF base.

Not much about that online, not because it was underhand or a secret, but because it all but pre-dates the internet.

History - if taken notice of - would give you something you are clearly lacking - perspective.

And if you knew all about it, why did you ask me?

I'll try again without resorting to sarcasm as you did.

What has he done in the way of asking for better terms?
And where is the proof?

The opportunity is for Ghosn - a skilled operator in his field - to improve the profitability of his factory.

Nissan has no love for the UK, it never did, it only built here because we offered better terms than other countries in Europe.

There have been benefits to the North East, and it's almost certainly in both parties' interests for the factory to remain and prosper.

Negotiations over the future are a poker game, as I said, Ghosn is a skilled operator, so it's up to our side to match that.

But he's already all but ruled out any nuclear option with remarks about hoping common sense will prevail.

But this follows their announcement following the Brexit vote that they were putting all UK investment decisions on hold.

This latest move is obviously putting pressure on government, the implied threat in both announcements being the possibility of them moving from the UK.

Quote from Ghosn: ""The question is what will happen to customs, trade and circulation of products. That will determine how, and how much we will invest in the UK,"

Any reasonable interpretation of that remark is Ghosn has a good idea how we wants UK/mainland Europe trade relations to work post-Brexit.

Thus he is applying a little public pressure on the UK Government to come up with terms that suit him.

Remarks tempered with further remarks about being reasonably optimistic and common sense prevailing.

As I said, it's a poker game.

You complain of sarcasm - that's your view - but to me this is all obvious and should not need pointing out to an intelligent person.

I think you have become far too bound up in this topic to be able to see the wood from the trees, or even see there are woods and trees.

Yes, I know all that... I'm just wondering how you see it being possible for his company to make more money, without the UK making some more concessions?

ie... it'll cost you and I more money to keep his company manufacturing in UK, if they are to remain competitive.

Good grief, you still managed to miss the point!

I asked you what was new, in Ghosts statement this is old stuff, not news.
He is simply repeating the same things that were said a few days after the referendum.Nothing new at all, yet you make out something has actually changed.
What do you imagine you are pointing out I am not well aware of?
