Oh dear does that mean that next weeks headline will be" cyclists to blame for London bridge killings ".
I don't think in fairness Boris should be castigated for a decision made 10 years ago
Agreed, I'm no fan of Boris Johnson, but in this instance perhaps not returning the barriers after the very recent Westminster Bridge attack is the real failing.

Thank you for that 'Danidl' and may I say your recent posts on this topic by way of response to the blinkered view of our new correspondent, 'tommie' are very powerful.

One side of my parentage was born and bred in Ireland and throughout my childhood, I gleaned much of what it was like to be Irish with great-grandparents and relatives born into the great famine of the mid-19th century and grandparents and a parent who lived through the Easter rising.

The blinkered views of the colonialist community in Ireland are extremely unhelpful in the progress of the human race generally on the island of Ireland but I suspect 'tommie' gained his prejudices, as have many others, from the propaganda they have been fed, whether it came from the British media, the British government or the British military......or a combination of the relentless bombardment by all three.

We British have a history of empire creation through force and in that process have treated other peoples with untold nastiness and brutality. Sadly, there are many around today who still retain the misguided belief that we have some god-given right to steal other people's lands and territory, then rape those countries to satisfy our greed and need for wealth creation.

This witty animation by Eddie Izzard for an American audience is derived from truth. The same elements of British society which grabbed territory in various parts of the world including Ireland are still around today. We refer to them as the aristocracy and the monarchy. They are represented politically by the tory party.

Tom
.. thank you for your comments, which are appreciated, however I am not sure references to blinkered and colonists is particularly helpful in the context of a population both sides that have had a seige mentality for many decades.

Under those conditions populations will become inward referencing and don't need any external affirmation from outside propaganda. It would have been extremely difficult , if not impossible, to have been a resident in NI without joining one of the "tribes".
Within a tribe there is security, a sense of belonging and love, outside a wilderness. The only people with any sense of freedom from this and for a limited time only, were the third level students, who once their studies were over were expected to and would revert back. .. unless they emigrated.
All the social services, church, organisations, sports associations social activities were and are tribal. The GAA for one side, soccer for the other, and only rugby occupied a middle ground.
Powerful political forces seek to enforce this with SF on one side and DUP on the other. With an entire population , all of whom suffered over decades, forgiveness is in short supply so the best we can hope for is mutual accommodation. As peace re-establishes itself then we can hope for all concerned that a middle ground can again re-emerge.
The DUP supporters are decent people, striving to do the best for themselves and their community. Likewise the other tribe. It would be my hope that they could see that more unites them with their estranged neighbours than with a land accross a sea.

I understand the point you make very well 'Danidl' but the fact remains that the British government has decided to utilise the distinctly protestant political grouping in NI out of sheer desperation on the part of May to cling to power.

It is beyond cynical and I believe large numbers of Irish people in the 6 counties will be rather put out by this liaison at a time when there exists the best chance ever of achieving a united Ireland. I find the tory party's action in this matter absolutely despicable and demonstrates clearly that they still have no concept of the situation in Ireland.

Trump's tantrum: President says he WON'T go ahead with state visit to UK unless he is guaranteed a rapturous welcome from the British people
President Donald Trump has called off state visits to the UK until the British people are prepared to meet him with open arms. Insiders say...
A state visit would be here in London where well under half the population are white British born and a very high proportion are Muslims. In fact we have residents from all the main 300 countries, including Mexicans, and natives of all the countries that the USA has attacked in the last half century.

If he thinks he'll ever get a rapturous reception here, he really is barmy. In any case he already knows how we've unfavourably dealt with his demands over his Scottish golf course.

I must be dreaming!
it may have something to do with the result of the election.
A new poll suggests that Labour would win an outright majority if a new election is called now.
He must have sensed that the wind has turned, by the autumn, it may be Mr Corbyn who will greet him at Heathrow airport.

So, what happened with the general election? Here is one interpretation from a useful website:

'And it came to pass, in the land of Britain, that the High Priestess went unto the people and said, Behold, I bring ye tidings of great joy. For on the eighth day of the sixth month there shall be a general election.

And the people said, Not another one.

And they waxed wroth against the High Priestess and said, Didst thou not sware, even unto seven times, that thou wouldst not call a snap election?

And the High Priestess said, I know, I know. But Brexit is come upon us, and I must go into battle against the tribes of France, Germany, and sundry other holiday destinations. And I must put on the armor of a strong majority in the people’s house. Therefore go ye out and vote.

And there came from the temple pollsters, who said, Surely this woman will flourish. For her enemy is as grass; she cutteth him down. He is as straw in the wind, and he will blow away. And the trumpet of her triumph shall sound in all the land.

And the High Priestess said, Piece of cake.

And there came from the same country a prophet, whose name was Jeremy. His beard was as the pelt of beasts, and his raiments were not of the finest. And he cried aloud in the wilderness and said, Behold, I bring you hope.

And suddenly there was with him a host of young people. And he said unto them, Ye shall study and grow wise in all things, and I shall not ask ye for gold. And the sick shall be made well, and they also will heal freely. And he promised unto them all manner of goodly things.

And the young people said unto him, How shall these things be rendered, seeing that thou hast no money in thy purse?

And he spake unto them in a voice of sounding brass and said, Soak the rich. And again, Pull down the mighty from their seats.

And the young people went absolutely nuts.

And they hearkened unto the word of Jeremy, and believed. For they said unto themselves, Lo, he bringeth unto us the desire of our hearts. He cometh by bicycle, with a helmet upon his head. And he eateth neither flesh nor fowl, according to the Scriptures. For man cannot live by bread alone, but hummus is quite another matter.

And the High Priestess saw all these things and was sore. And she gathered unto her the chief scribes and the Pharisees and said unto them, What the hell is going on?

And they said unto her, It is a blip, as if it were a rough place upon the road.

But they said unto themselves, When the government was upon her shoulders, this woman was mighty. But now that she has gone abroad unto every corner of the land, she stumbleth. For surely it is written that ruling and campaigning are as oil and water, and there shall be no concord betwixt them.

And the chief scribes wrote upon tablets, saying, Jeremy is false of tongue. He hideth wickedness in his heart. And his sums do not add up.

And nobody paid any attention.

And the elders rose up and said to the young people, If ye choose Jeremy, he will bring distress in your toils and wailing upon your streets. Do ye not remember the nineteen-seventies?

And the young people said, The what?

And the elders spake again, and said to the young people, Beware, for he gave succor in days of yore to the I.R.A.

And the young people said, The what?
And the young people said, Jeremy shall bring peace unto all nations, for he hateth the engines of war that take wing across the heavens. And he showeth respect for all peoples, even unto the transgender community.

And the elders said, The what?

And it came to pass that the heathen of this land came among the people, with fire and sword, and slew many among the faithful. And great was the lamentation.

And the High Priestess waxed exceeding wroth and said to the people, Fear not. For I shall bind your wounds and give ye shelter from the heathen, and shall take up the sword against them.

And there came again pollsters from the temple, who said, Will the people not vote for her in this hour of need?

And nobody paid any attention.

And it came to the vote.

And the elders went up to vote, and the young people. And the young people were as a multitude. And in the hours of darkness there was much counting. And the young people watched by night, and the elders went to bed.

And there came in the morning news that the High Priestess had vanquished the prophet Jeremy. But the triumph of the High Priestess was as the width of a nail. And she was vexed.

And the elders and the chief scribes and the Pharisees spoke among themselves, yea, even in the corners of their houses.

And there was great rejoicing amidst the multitude of the young. And they took strong wine, and did feast among themselves. And there were twelve baskets left over.

And of the pollsters there was no sign.

And the people saw Jeremy and said, Surely this man has won? Doth he not skip in gladness like a young hart upon the hills?

And there was great murmuring among the elders. And they said unto themselves, Weep not. For the High Priestess doth but prepare the way. Cometh there not one who is greater than she?

And they said, Behold, for the hour of the redeemer is upon us. And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, the Prince of Peace. And they cried in one voice, Boris.

And the young people said, Oh, ****.

And the people gave tongue, and made supplication unto the Lord, saying, Lord, let our cry come unto thee.

And the Lord thought the whole thing was absolutely hilarious.

And then the people said, Lord, what shall we do regarding Brexit? For henceforth the High Priestess shall be as weak as a newborn lamb. How shall we hope for continued access to the single market?

And the Lord said, The what?'

Excellent...Boris the Redeemer eh?
.
I bet he is glad he didn't lose the receipt when he pawned his ticket to the top job!

However I have a feeling history will repeat itself
Boris's Brexit battle-bus gets parking ticket

I think they will choose either the Cheshire Cat or Moggie and as an outsider Gollum (if his wife lets him)

What do parasitic inbreds look like?

Here's a pair of losers but one of them will need to be pushed as she doesn't have the grace to admit she has made one huge balls-up and left her party precariously placed as we go forward to the most important negotiations since WW2.

It seems that loathsome is out and Gollum is in at the revamped Min of Ag and Fish.
Great choice of a Climate Change denier there.

I rather like this tweet

I'm hearing that the DUP are set to demand a prominent role for Nigel Farage in the BREXIT negotiations, possibly Aaron Banks too. That's going to go down well :)

It will make Tom and OG just a little angry,,..vut probably Juhnker even more so..dont think he likes,Farage.....
I never thought Theresa May could provide so much entertainment. I was hoping that she was going to embarrass & humiliate herself in front of the nation, but she seems intend on doing it in front of the entire planet. It's marvellous.

Remember the phrase, 'Taking back control'? Now we have the government that coined the phrase only able to continue by giving away the ability to exercise control to a party in Ireland, an area strongly in favour of remaining within the EU.

How about, 'strong and stable'? Gove, you're sacked! - Gove, please come back...all is forgiven!

There's a common thread running through the tory party's woes at the moment. Can you guess what it is?
