Ministers with far too much time on their hands:

Ministers have backed calls for God Save the Queen to be played more frequently by the BBC and other public broadcasters.
The culture minister, Chris Philp, told MPs the “more we hear the national anthem sung, frankly, the better” in response to a suggestion from a Conservative colleague for the Beeb to play it at the end of their programming for the day.

Even when played, it is rarely sung, as Philp wants. End of day on Radio 4 is just orchestral.

Ineptitude in setting up the furlough scheme - even under intense time pressure. Surely some "if you didn't need it, we'll grab it back" clause should have been the minimum?

Bookmaker Ladbrokes claimed £102m from the furlough scheme, despite rapid growth in online betting making up for all losses from the closure of stores.

Representing Croydon South, the rich private estate part of the borough, Philp is a creep of the worst kind. This suggestion is typical of him.

The last thing most of us want is to regularly hear the dreadful dirge that is our national anthem, especially not its idiotic words sung.

he may have got its cue from the 6-Jan anniversary of last year Capitol invasion of Trump's supporters.
BJ could copy Trump and have his own Proud Boys and our own British 'Q'anon.

Maybe depends on which version...

When all the sceptre'd crew
Have paid their Homage, due
The Guillotine
Let Freedom's flag advance
Till all the world, like France
O'er tyrants' graves shall dance
And peace begin.

Lord grant that Marshal Wade,
May by thy mighty aid, Victory bring
. May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush,
God Save the King."

Surely the SNP absolutely LOVE that verse? Acting as a recruiting sergeant for independence.

(The fact that your quoted version has "King" tends to imply non-recent use. Unless news hasn't yet reached me.)

Considering that the "National Anthem doesn't have anything to do with the English, ignores the Welsh and refers to the Scots as rebellious (cheek! we can be revolting) and is all to do with God and the Monarch
Who as a Saxe Coburb has nothing to do with England Either I reckon since it's about the Royal mob and god only
It should really be

.. Its the original and still the best. My understanding is that it came from one of those music halls or plays

Meanwhile, someone still has it in for Truss:

Trade department questioned over food and drink bill for Liz Truss Japan trip
DIT initially said Truss and three officials spent £182 of public money over three nights, but FoI response shows £2,080 spend
...
“There is a clear pattern of behaviour emerging here with Liz Truss, which raises serious questions about her character,” Thornberry told the Daily Mirror.

“Because if her instinct is to hide the truth and hope that no one asks questions even over these expenses claims, what else is she willing to do that about?”

The stories of what constitutes National anthems is as much a work of social science and revisionism as musicianship... . The German one is based on a Haydn cello concerto .. called the Kaiser .. and It is actually a nicer piece of Music. , the Egyptians took the Verdi March, and the British Empire took that 1740s music hall hit of anti Scottish fever .. They could just as easily have taken "Hearts of Oak " or the Sharpe theme tune .."Over the hills and far away ". ..again a music hall tune.
Tunes are constantly reworded and reworked ... Our famous "Danny Boy i" is a British Music Hall gothic interpretation of an old Irish Slow Air ,with truly appalling words.

There are hundreds of them... They are part of a bardic tradition going back a couple of thousand years, but the ones which survive are typically those known in the 1400 s . . Tourlough O Carolan , was a blind harper at the end of that era.. Actually from this neck of the woods .. Carolan is a Louth name. For authenticity, can I recommend a group called the Gloaming

Thank you for that, I'll add them to my cycling playlist. Sung or spoken stories can outlast the written word by a large order of magnitude - one never knows how old an old song is. I do wish they hadn't killed all the Druids, perhaps some of their lore remains.
