My tweet to start the day

·In the Telegraph this morning: "With the right leadership restored, the British public will get through this crisis" Perhaps, but the sort of leader we require can walk on water in an emergency, not wet himself by tripping and falling in it like Boris.

Boris Johnson told to take tougher stance on China as Tory MPs launch new research group
TORY backbenchers are set to urge Boris Johnson to take a tougher stance towards China following the coronavirus crisis.
Senior party figures including Commons Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Tom Tugendhat and former Cabinet minister Damian Green last night launched a new “China Research Group” to “promote fresh thinking and debate” about international relations with the communist regime. The organisation is understood to have been inspired by the European Research Group which has been hugely influential in driving Tory policy towards the EU.

In other words they now have a new Bogey man.

Insect repellant!

The British army - at least those on covid-19 duty, will be issued with citriodiol insect repellant.

AND

disinfectant

AND

vitamin D supplements!

The broadcaster added that personnel will also be given a disinfectant to use on themselves before washing and vitamin D supplements to support their immune systems. The measures do not replace physical distancing and other government advice, it said.

Don't get me wrong, they are are as needing and worthy of protection as anyone.

But I do object to the mismatch between official advice and what is being done for this particular group.

We are told that insects do not transmit covid-19. (Fine if it is just that they want to avoid insect bites in the ordinary way of things.)

We are told disinfectant is no better that soap and water. (Unless you have orange skin.)

We are not being told vitamin D is a good idea - despite much thought and some general evidence that it might be.

Adding:

And if it is a good idea for the Army, what about the RN and RAF?

Admittedly, those in the forces have more limited opportunity for making their own choices and acquiring these things, but if it is such a good idea, how about advising others in hazardous situations - police, paramedics, NHS staff generally, care home staff, lorry drivers, border force staff, ...?

Well if you had to work with a "Scientific Advisory Committee" where one member was a fan of Ethnic cleansing (AKA Eugenics) what sort of helpful advice would you expect? Was Trump being offered advice too?

No, we have it from a reliable source that disinfectant works if you drink it.

The soap and water treatment in the mouth only works on bad language, not on the virus.

Choose ten lockdown friends and family: Government considers relaxing 'stay at home' rules to let small groups meet for meals, share childcare and to reunite couples who live apart - after Nicola Sturgeon touted similar 'bubble' plan

At this stage of life I haven't got ten people left, can I go out and make new friends?

Another tweet from me
oldgroaner?@oldgroaner

In the Daily Mail: Health Secretary Matt Hancock yesterday warned the government would not ease lockdown restrictions until ministers were certain they could prevent a deadly second wave of infection. Great News! pity they made the first wave a deliberate disaster

https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2020/04/24/strokes-coronavirus-young-patients/

Young and middle-aged people, barely sick with covid-19, are dying from strokes
Doctors sound alarm about patients in their 30s and 40s left debilitated or dead. Some didn’t even know they were infected.
The analyses suggest coronavirus patients are mostly experiencing the deadliest type of stroke. Known as large vessel occlusions, or LVOs, they can obliterate large parts of the brain responsible for movement, speech and decision-making in one blow because they are in the main blood-supplying arteries.
Many researchers suspect strokes in covid-19 patients may be a direct consequence of blood problems that are producing clots all over some people’s bodies.
Clots that form on vessel walls fly upward. One that started in the calves might migrate to the lungs, causing a blockage called a pulmonary embolism that arrests breathing — a known cause of death in covid-19 patients. Clots in or near the heart might lead to a heart attack, another common cause of death. Anything above that would probably go to the brain, leading to a stroke.

Amazing that he was able to attend these Sage meeting while Boris was hiding in the Chequers fridge
"SAGE" - yet another bit of propaganda itself. Used to imply that the committee is actually sage, and full of sage people.

Many years ago, code names were expressly chosen to be neutral. Think of the Armilla patrol, Mulberry, etc. Now they come up with a word that at a headline level of understanding sound wonderful, and name things to back that up. Backronyms, etc.

‘Dom is an extremely kind man whatever people assume’ Mary Wakefield on her husband Dominic Cummings on @BBCr4today. If you’re wondering why we needed to know that, it’s because of God apparently https://pic.twitter.com/FcI1Zg7p0f

Re putting in a good word for Cummings, it's as well to remember that Al Capone's mother once famously famously declared "He's a good boy, he's kind to his a Momma."

This one for Tommie, but perhaps of interest to others. RoI has got the infection rates under control ..We have clusters in Nursing Homes, and they are finally being tackled. The success is such that the Government is looking at reductions in the lockdown regime. Surprisingly NI has done somewhat better than RoI in the Nursing Home clusters ,even if it worse overall
However we can only do this on an all Ireland basis, and that is the rub. Unless the NI Executive polices the sea border with Scotland ,we cannot work in tandem. Guess who finds this anathema?. The alternative is no easing North or South or else, We in the RoI stop NI people coming South. The burning question would be which of these alternatives would the NI people prefer?

We have spoken to the neighbours quite a bit (including several NHS staff) on the street after the Thursday clap-out.

Wondering if we should institute a regular hiss and boo -out for the government.
