The strange thing is the crazier the things Trump comes out with the more likely he is to get re-elected.
I'll be very surprised if he doesn't get to serve a second term....there's US politics for you.

Drones - again. I find it very difficult to believe that drones would be an effective way of delivering medical supplies. Possibly, in a few cases, some tablets. But they are not going to manage cylinders of oxygen, ventilators, or even more than tiny amounts of PPE.

Given the need for someone to control their flights, is it actually any better than van, diesel, delivery person for the use of? Especially when weather isn't as good as it is right now.

Shapps says he has also given the green light to fast-track trial the use of drones to deliver medical supplies, beginning next week on the Isle of Wight.

Trump now seems to be backing down on his claim...very wise. Interestingly US troops now being issued with insect repellent which supposedly keeps Covid at bay, for a while at least.

How do you get the little beggars to keep still long enough to hit them with the spray?

This is ridiculous. Drone technology hasn't developed sufficiently to make this work and now isn't the time to start experimenting. Amazon have been trialing drones on an airfield near Cambridge for three years and still haven't developed systems sufficiently for consistent regular deliveries.

The government has an army of volunteers, of whichI am one, signed up the the NHS volunteer scheme, we could be used. Tasks aren't coming through via the volunteer platform, it's more BS and window dressing again.

Anyone here actually surprised by this?

Revealed: Cummings is on secret scientific advisory group for Covid-19

Exclusive: Leaked list reveals presence of Johnson adviser and Vote Leave ally on supposedly independent body

They don't even give a hint as to what advantage they are trying to gain by using drones.

I struggle to understand the drone obsession.

(My view is that if we had to invent a distribution system, it would use some sort of pipe with individual semi-autonomous sleds. Depending on size of pipe, a lesser or greater proportion of what we need could be delivered to our doors.)

I think how it works is a bit like those dry oil sprays the ladies put on themselves to look the business on the beach.
Bugs, flies, midges all sorts of creepy-crawlies don't like the smell of citrus so I suppose maybe Covid doesn't either. Many years ago my partner and myself used to sell those scented oil sprays to the Scots by the hundreds... why Scotland ? Horseflies, drives the nags crazy and the citrus oil used to keep them at bay.
When I go out to the countryside in the summer taking photographs I spray it on my face & arms to prevent getting bitten, works too.

The reason for the Drone obsession? to divert attention from their abject failure to efficiently employ the systems that are to hand and quite capable if used properly to get the job done quickly, and also the notion of using drones can be used to kid the public that they are capable of thinking imaginatively, in the hope the public are too stupid to realise they are

The suggested use of drones is intended to dazzle and to charm the public into believing that British cutting edge technology is going to lead us out of this mess. That will shift focus from the government’s mishandling.

There is no way that drones can or will be used in the way Grant Shapps indicated. It’s not safe for domestic deliveries in an urban area to begin with. If Amazon can’t do it, that bunch of morons in Westminster certainly can’t.

It's our centre for failed engineering.

It's where Britain developed the rocket motors that were going to take us into space, leading the world.

It's where Saunders Roe developed the Princess flying boat that was going to take passengers anywhere in the world, except that it was never able to take off from the water more than a foot.

It's where we used to make hovercraft, until Johnny Foreigner did it much better.

It's where we were making the huge blades for wind turbines, but we don't do that any more since the ones we buy from other countries companies are both bigger and better.

So if we are going to fail to deliver parcels by drones, where best to try it first?

I'm not so sure, a Reaper has a payload of 3800lbs.

Yes, Freshwater you can't drink, Cowes you can't milk, Newport you can't bottle.
But they do grow garlic!
