Coronavirus: infected health minister Nadine Dorries had been in No 10

A health minister who has met hundreds of people in parliament in the past week and attended a reception at No 10 with Boris Johnson has had coronavirus diagnosed, The Times can reveal.

Nadine Dorries, who played a role in drawing up legislation to tackle coronavirus, fell ill on Friday last week and her diagnosis was confirmed this evening. She is now in isolation and understood to be recovering.

The identity of the individual who infected Ms Dorries is unknown but the minister has been working in parliament and the Department of Health and Social Care for the past week. Officials are identifying all those with whom she has been in contact since contracting the virus, including MPs.

She felt unwell on Friday but went on to hold a surgery for 50 constituents the next day

Not sure about the leading, but it certainly is the front, and will hopefully focus minds a bit more than they have been

I do not believe that CV simply cannot travel further than 1-2 metres. We all know how even a mild zephyr can carry dust, pollen, aromas, etc., far further.

Maybe round here the wind is so strong any CV gets blown right across the county?
I think that flying insects may prove to be a vector.

GRAY DAY Boris Johnson faces Tory backlash after parachuting controversial Chris Grayling into prized intelligence job
The PM is to appoint the controversial former Cabinet minister to sit on Parliament’s esteemed Intelligence and Security Committee.

'GOING DOWN BADLY'
One Tory MP told The Sun: “Giving Grayling the ISC job is going down very badly, and is being seen as a blatant ‘jobs for the boys’.

“There were some eminently more qualified candidates to chair it, but clearly Boris owes him one.”

Here are his qualifications

No one does Failing
Quite as well as Grayling

As she fell ill on Friday, how on earth can she/they be claiming she took all the advised precautions?

In a statement released by the department, she said: “I can confirm I have tested positive for coronavirus. As soon as I was informed I took all the advised precautions and have been self-isolating at home.

“Public Health England has started detailed contact tracing and the department and my parliamentary office are closely following their advice. I would like to thank PHE and the wonderful NHS staff who have provided me with advice and support.”

There seems little choice but to do something about Parliament now. After all, we could see votes significantly affected by covid-19 issues (whether severity of illness or isolation).

A second UK MP enters self-isolation

The York MP Rachael Maskell has confirmed that she has been advised to self-isolate after having a meeting with Nadine Dorries last Thursday – she says that she is asymptomatic.

NHS111 have advised that I self-isolate as a result of a meeting I had with the Government's Mental Health Minister last Thursday who has subsequently tested positive for Coronovirus. Thankfully I am asymptomatic. It is so important that we all follow all public health advice.

I am taking all the precautions: open the shop to the public only on appointments, prepare for all essential staff to work in isolation, one room per person, wear disposable daily face masks when meeting in the same room, keep windows open for extra ventilation.
The idea is the virus particles can be suspended in the air for minutes after someone open their mouth, we have to wait for them to drop to carpets or stick to the walls.

I was under the impression that a face mask offers no protection for the wearer. If you have the virus, wearing a mask will give protection to those around you who don’t have it.

The U.K. seems to be running at the highest deaths / 100 cases of Coronavirus at the moment. About time we won at something.

I equate wearing a face mask to doing a short range self isolation.
Our Chinese suppliers sent us a stash of face masks a couple of days ago. The masks are sealed in plastic bags but the bags are wrapped in local newspapers.
Hatti treated the wrapping like nuclear waste.

  • If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Masks would be handy but you need to change them regularly - plus there's not a large enough stock for everybody (Even China ran short) - so little point on making it compulsory for general public to wear out & about as it would lead to panic buying like bog roll. Hopefully hospital and care homes will have enough to use where needed.

I hear that people rare stealing hand sanitiser from hospitals when they are visiting patients. It’s becoming quite a problem. You can always rely on the British public to act with dignity and restraint in a crisis. FFS. Bull Dog spirit and all that will see us through.

I visited my parents yesterday, while shopping for them I noticed the chip shop was still closed.

At the outbreak of the virus in China the owner and family of their local chip shop were in China. When they returned to the UK they placed a notice on the shop door, whilst no one was ill they were keeping the shop closed for two weeks and keeping in voluntary self isolation.

Even though they had no illness and did exactly the right thing, it seems that they haven't re opened - due largely to the amount of BS they got on social media.

Meanwhile the Chinese chip shop 500m further up the road who have never closed continues to run. (obviously I don't know if they have seen a downturn in business, they may be struggling along or it may be BAU)

Hopefully in a few weeks or so, when this is done with people will come to their senses.

it's difficult to see when this crisis will be over.
The NHS tested about 30,000 people, found about 1% of those tested with the virus.
That could mean that as much as 1% of the population can be spreaders.

The real long term problem for people in our age group is re-infection. You can get infected, beat it then later on, when your immune system goes through a rough patch, the virus may wake up and spread.
