The only plane there being an easyjet somewhat undermined the message though.they displayed a view of the airstrip in Gib with this caption:
Gibraltar is an important UK military base
I rarely disagree with you 'flecc' but on this occasion, I must make an exception as I rather enjoy cricket. I do concede that there are times when it can become tedious but the skill and the athleticism of the participants is a joy to watch at times and that makes it worthwhile for me.It should have been, anything to liven up the terminally boring game that cricket is.
.
Which ones?
Steady there you really shouldn't call Tommy the liar, after all, he's one of yours!Oops. More lies there Tommy the liar.
So little knowledge! I have actually been there on more than one occasion and inside the rock during a major NATO exercise, so perhaps you'd like to explain exactly how Gib is important to the UK nowadays?Gibraltar IS an important military to us. Same as Cyprus.
And the inference that BBC Newss is a propaganda tool.
You wackos!
Each to their own Tom, I was expressing a personal view, though I think it widespread.I rarely disagree with you 'flecc' but on this occasion, I must make an exception as I rather enjoy cricket. Utterly off theme, but cricket has a loyal following along the east coast of Ireland,. All the way from Antrim down to Waterford. .. For myself I much prefer to see paint dry, but it is as harmless summer activity. Each to their own Tom, I was expressing a personal view, though I think it widespread.
Other than the bigger spectator events, cricket does seem to have died a death among the wider public as a participant sport. Fifty years and more ago I used to see all ages playing cricket in various informal to formal ways at many regular locations, but now I see none of those.
Conversely football of various sorts seems to be played all year round these days.
.
No. Gibraltar is merely an important symbol to those who still fantasize about Britain's past supposed greatness.Gibraltar IS an important military to us. Same as Cyprus.
Blimey, your batsmen must be incredible!cricket has a loyal following along the east coast of Ireland,. All the way from Antrim down to Waterford. ..
Without insult, I think that encapsulates the entire BREXIt mindset. The rest of europe are prepared to work together ,so don't need land bases in far off locations. Why would England need a military base in Cyprus when Italy is within flying distance. Why would it need a military base in Gibraltar, when the Spanish navy and air force are next door. The UK may need to protect NW Europe from an incursion from the Baltic, but leave the defence of the Med to those on that front line.Gibraltar IS an important military to us. Same as Cyprus.

Absolutely! In the case of Gib, the only useful function it has now is as a handy filling station for LGBs…….that's an Americanism, an acronym for big naval vessels (Large Grey Boats).
With all the bother we have lately with gas turbine tubs we would probably do worse than fit them with sails again!Absolutely! In the case of Gib, the only useful function it has now is as a handy filling station for LGBs…….that's an Americanism, an acronym for big naval vessels (Large Grey Boats).
Other than that, it's a convenient point from which to record the vessels that sail through the straits every day, which is really, really interesting in a train-spotting kind of way. Of course, when we firststoleacquired the rock fairly and squarely in battle with our mates of that time, the Dutch, there was no need for naval vessels to refuel there as the planners were forward-thinking people who realised the worth of wind power.

I suppose you could be right in that but only if you are a fan of warmongering or perhaps had some desire to revisit the Falklands. Its not important for attacking Europe of course but globally they are strategic.
It's really not a debate tbh. Anyone can see the importance of having bases away from your own mainland if you're a player in Global affairs.
