Brexit, for once some facts.

As rumours emerge from Parliament tonight that Boris Johnson will trigger, via 48 supporting letters to the 1922 Committee, a leadership contest to replace Theresa May as early as Monday, we ask:

Can Boris Johnson become our next Prime Minister?

Guess what - it's another poll! So far, 86% reckon there's not a chance.

No we don't.....
Do you imagine the EU are blissfully unaware of what the WTO rules are?
They know very well we can't impose this on the EU can we?

"Although Remainers are likely to argue that a zero tariff deal is unlikely to be agreed by the remaining EU countries without significant concessions from the UK on budget contributions and free movement, trade officials are said to be “quietly confident” about exploiting the grace period."

Why should the EU do that? this is simply the WTO rules not the EU ones.
In their place would we allow us to get away with that?
No way.
It's the equivalent of giving the UK ten years Free Membership
Just try getting the 27 member states or a quorum to go along with that.

More wishful thinking!

Where is this poll?

Anyone care to speculate on what will happen to key indicators like the value of sterling should he go ahead?

Eddie Mair summed him up pretty well.

Boris Johnson accused: 'you're a nasty piece of work' – video

The London mayor faces a grilling on Sunday over allegations made against him in an upcoming BBC documentary. Eddie Mair, interviewing Boris Johnson on BBC1's Andrew Marr Show, confronts him about claims he made up quotes while working for The Times, lied to his party leader about having an affair and provided a friend with the address of someone they wanted to 'beat up'. Mair also asks Johnson about his refusal to discuss whether he wants to be the prime minister, to which he replies 'I don't want to talk about this'

So we go from today's uncertainty to a temporary EFTA membership, to something else - all within about two years? That represents a huge amount of both uncertainty and change. Not at all sure we will be able to manage it - either in the sense of achieving the changes or that of being in control of them.
I meant the UK may join EFTA if the negotiation with the EU isn't finished by December 2020.

Bombshell poll reveals massive union backing for new EU vote
Survey of Unite, Unison and GMB members by YouGov reveals 2-1 support for a second Brexit referendum

Yes, the momentum for, at the very minimum, another referendum has grown enormously over recent weeks. I suspect May desperately want out of the tory commitment on implementing 'Brexit' and her future in politics might be best served by twisting her cabinet round to acceptance that a further mandate from the people has become essential.

She doesn't have many options and as some Shakespearean playwright once included in a nonsense story about JC......no, not that one!........and not that one either...... 'Beware the ides of March!' It's coming round quickly!

That is not how it read to me.

the EU has a lot more to gain with a free trade deal, especially if the UK joins temporarily EFTA during the 2 years transition.

I can't read that as other than some period of EFTA membership which is not now, and will not be in several years time after transition whether that includes the post-transition transition or not.

the only time that the UK may be forced into considering EFTA membership is when a hard brexiter like BJ becomes PM because even BJ is aware that he'll lose the next GE in May 2022 if there is no deal by December 2020.
Any softer brexiter or ex remainer PM would want to call a second referendum if a deal could not be concluded before December 2020.
the EU needs to demonstrate that the UK cannot take advantage of past membership to the future after leaving, the transition and/or EFTA membership will do that. That would suit moderate remainers too, the UK will stay very close to the EU. The only people who are infuriated are the hard brexiters.

Just wanted to check the origin of the phrase "clear the decks" as used re BJ and getting the divorce underway so, as you would, did a quick search. Found a page and saw their very apposite "phrase of the day":

treat like dirt
treat like dirt Meanings: – behave someone very badly without respect – show disdain toward – to have no respect or consideration for someone

I thought either Marina or the marriage being regarded as a bit of gear to be cleared was insulting enough. "Treat like dirt" describes it admirably bluntly.

From the Independent this morning
"
Brexit talks at risk of collapse as British cabinet ministers brand EU compromise on Irish border 'unacceptable'
Exclusive: EU officials believe the compromise is 'the only way' to bring the two sides together on the most vexed issue in negotiations
Brexit talks are at risk of collapse as a planned EU compromise on the critical question of the Irish border has been branded “unacceptable” by British cabinet ministers.

The Independent has learnt that EU officials believe they have struck upon “the only way” to bring the two sides together on the Irish border in a bid to secure a withdrawal agreement later this year.

But their proposal has already been outright rejected by at least two cabinet ministers, with one going further and branding the EU’s suggestion “*******”.
Under the new proposal, while the EU is still insisting the backstop must be in the legal text of the withdrawal agreement and must see Northern Ireland remaining under customs union and single market rules, they are now indicating there could be “new language” to make it more palatable to Ms May.
