And here we pay to doll up Grease Moggs Family pile?At last assessment 23.7 %, of EU population were deemed in poverty. (2015).I,ve just been lucky enough to help move an overgrown barge through Canal Du Midi to Bezier. (,Taking it on upto Marseille next week)
Bezier is stunning, as is the Canal but the Planer trees lining it are dying. (some fungus the Americans are getting blamed for that came in some imported wood??? I didn't believe it either) The EU is giving 200 million Euro to replace as many trees as possible as soon as possible. (, Trees help stop erosion and evaporation apparently)
Does anyone else think this is misplaced priorities??? (EU are also paying to renovate the Castle at Bezier, they already paid for renovation of 9 stair lock system)
Its not as though a penny (cent) of any of this will help those in poverty. It will go to rich contractors, mayors and top end business. (Just as it did in Northern Spain on road improvements, the girls on plastic chairs now sit at side of beautiful roads)Oh, and give the rich somewhere to visit and pretend to be cultured.
Who decides all this in this democratic EU?
All told, the Canal and surrounding area will have benifitted to tune of a billion euros? Suits me, I spend lots of time here but it's not right.
I don't lead high life, don't live here. Don't own boats I move. Don't drink champagne and don't pretend to be a socialist. So sort of wrong on every count.champagne socialists living highlife abroad paid for by those at home
A confession at last!
No, I don't. They are both wrong. The EU simply more corrupt. And here we pay to doll up Grease Moggs Family pile?
Royal palaces, etc,.etc
And a quarter of our children are deemed in poverty.
Do you see any difference there?
Who decides all this in "The Home of Democracies?"
Tourisme was 7.1% of PIB in 2016 and means that people like me have jobs. The Canal is a major destination in an area that lives mostly from agriculture other than Toulouse which is industrial. So every cent spent there I approve of.At last assessment 23.7 %, of EU population were deemed in poverty. Have you checked under "Fake News" it's probably there.....Tourisme was 7.1% of PIB in 2016 and means that people like me have jobs. The Canal is a major destination in an area that lives mostly from agriculture other than Toulouse which is industrial. So every cent spent there I approve of.

- The budget is over 20 years
- Private individuals and businesses have put 540 million in the pot
- The state, the region, local authorities are investing
Search as I might I can't find a reference to the EU footing the bill for 200 million (total budget 220 million), can we have a link please?
I was repeating conversation with Mayor (of Bezier), He joined us on boat going through lock system. (You, ll notice many trees marked with green dots, I questioned what they were, they are the ones marked to be cut down)Tourisme was 7.1% of PIB in 2016 and means that people like me have jobs. Yep, agreed, but when I told everybody that 6 months ago I was shot down. Everybody in whole of Northern Spain knows full well the extent of corruption on roads and general infrastructure. It's a joke there. Tiny villages with pristine dual carriage ways.. then a dead end. The whole of EU is same. (Greece is worse)The EU invests, it doesn't throw its money around.
The roads in Spain are part of a vast corruption scandal which has just removed the prime minister from office. The EU trusted the PP government, now they are exposed. The EU trusts the Italian government a lot less but still provides funds for infrastructure. I guess the Mafia will be very disappointed if Italy falls out of the Euro and the EU, maybe they won't let it happen?...
What has the EU done for me?I was repeating conversation with Mayor (of Bezier), He joined us on boat going through lock system. (You, ll notice many trees marked with green dots, I questioned what they were, they are the ones marked to be cut down)
As far as investment in area is concerned.. If you were correct and any investments were that (an investment) the EU's own policy of free market should attract investment. It doesn't because its a bad investment. How much of your money would you invest in new planer trees.? You are justifying doing up Wentworth to give a few jobs to cleaners.
My point is there are far more worthy causes than Bezier and so called "infected" planer trees.
The actual influx of trade/tourism directly to Canal is minimal. Unless you work for Le Boat... who, s boats are a disgrace anyway. How many are there on Canal? Number on Canal pales into insignificance at side of motor homes etc. It would be a big white Elephant for private investors.
The EU is a great big fat gravy train. Brilliant if it stops near you. Forget it if you are poor or needy. It won't turn up.
BTW OG. Just checked. EU Poverty level. 23.7%. UK 's is 20%. What has EU done for you? Built fantastic roads going nowhere in Spain. Built 50 locks plus on Canal Du Midi. Renovated old Castles in Carcassonne and Bezier. Replanting £200,000k worth of planter trees... which actually look fine to me. Sounds like a con, looks like a con. It is a con. Argument is they have been infected since 1918..????but now need replacing. (They are saying American ammunition cases dumped in Canal post WW1 have caused a fungal infection of just the trees next to Canal. Yes I do believe in fairies. (The other 10million in region are fine)
The point you are completely missing is your assumption is hypothetical. The corruption mentioned is already rife. To put things in perspective. Transparency International rate UK public services/Government in 8th place out of 180 countries assessed for corruption. Not perfect by any means. France is rated 23rd and Spain was 30th until 2011 after which it dropped to 42nd. I wonder where it would have been had current shannanigons been known. What has the EU done for me?
Offered the possibility of a better future for the next generation, and done far more to curb the excesses of this Parliament of ours , to which gullible Brexit voters have offered their throats to.
And brought in much legislation that we all benefit from, but then jealousy that someone else may be getting a better deal than I am doesn't interest me as it seems to affect you.
Perhaps you should ask yourself why you have this fetish of seeing evil in all that the EU does and igoring the far worse exesses of our own administration that your Brexit vote has unleashed on an unsuspecting public.
You think you see corruption in the EU, much of this caused only by it's limited powers
Believe me you haven't seen anything yet, but you will after Brexit here.
57,000 trees have been replanted since 2003 at the cost of 3,000 Euros each.(You' ll notice many trees marked with green dots, I questioned what they were, they are the ones marked to be cut down)
Justified by whose business model? Would you pay 3000 Euro to have a tree removed? The founding principle of EU is free enterprise. Is that solving g poverty? Explain who it helps. It's happening because the place is now World Heritage Site. Yes, it's beautiful... so is Monaco but at least that is private investment. How can EU justify that when 24% of its citizens can't afford to eat properly let alone visit Canal Du Midi.57,000 trees have been replanted since 2003 at the cost of 3,000 Euros each.
It seems that more remedial work still need doing. The cost is shared out between individual donations, business donations and grants from the government and the EU spread over the past 15 years and still on going.
When you consider that the Canal du Midi is 240km long, such a project is justified.
I suppose that it is much more difficult to navigate a boat down the Canal du Midi - now it's no longer plane sailing.the Canal du Midi before replanting:
the virus killed the plane trees.
the amount involved is relatively modest. About 1% of our taxes is spent on other EU members, roughly equivalent to the amount we give to international charitable causes.Justified by whose business model? Put it on twice for both Tom's faces.
The 3000 euros plants a tree that will be there for for 300 years to give pleasure to all. Poor conditions engender low expectations of betterment and promote despair. One of the best ways to improve people's lives is to improve their environment to make them feel better. Why should my taxes pay for trees at side of Canal Du Midi? Is that really best way to get people out of poverty. I dont think so.
