“Italians have to take care of the poor regions of Italy. That means more work, less corruption, seriousness, we will help them as we always did. But don’t play this game of loading with responsibility the EU. A country is a country, a nation is a nation. Countries first, Europe second.”

J.C. Juncker

Spain may be on the way to curing its corruption problem, I am not holding my breath...
No people and Spain itself have just realised the depth corruption runs to. It's entwined in every transaction at every level. Just try running a business there.

You're close but incorrect if you imagine that that scenario wouldn't exist were there no EU or, if the UK had never been part of that union.

Where I live, there are lots of Spaniards operating along similar lines as the northern European entrepreneurs described in your scenario. They are made up of many locals, many more Madrileńos as well as quite a few from the northernmost regions including Basques.

I would not describe myself as rich by any means but I'm happy with some of the investments I have made. As my friends in Normandy say often, 'La vie est douce!'

Replace May with Gove to sort out Brexit, Tory donor urges
Government should be bolder in talks with Brussels, Leave campaign backer claims

Michael Gove should be installed as the new Tory leader because Theresa May has shown that she cannot “carry Brexit through”, a major party donor has publicly warned.

In a stark sign of the frustration among prominent Brexit supporters over the government’s handling of negotiations with the EU, Crispin Odey, a hedge fund manager who backed the Leave campaign, said he believed the environment secretary had the skills to make a success of Britain’s exit and appeal to voters.

Odey, whose most recent donation to the Conservative party was a £50,000 gift before last year’s general election, said the government needed to be far bolder in its attitude to Brussels. It should be learning from the new Italian populist coalition government, which has plans that would defy EU rules on debt, he said, suggesting that Britain should start breaching EU rules by pursuing policies such as signing trade deals. He also backed a change in leadership.

The only grain of truth is that statement is that they don't know what to do, and never did.
Crispin Odey:

“We’ve got to have that self-confidence to make breaches. There’s no point in voting for freedom if you don’t know what to do when you’re free."

there is a grain of truth in what he said.

but does he, Gove and BJ know what to do now that brexiters won?

A grain is a small measurement (about 65 milligrams in weight) contrasted with the tonnes of baloney and utter falsehood issued by same people.

Also he is so very far from disinterested:

Crispin Odey amasses large bet against UK government debt
British hedge fund manager targets weaker prices for 30-year gilts via futures

(Of course, the same criticism could be levelled against Soros. Difference is, I rather agree with him. :))

This just shows how little such people think.

No country will sign a trade deal with a country prepared to breach their trade deal with someone else to do that!

How stupid must Crispin Odey be?

I don't know but I suspect he is not. He knows which way to bet, he bet that brexit would win and made a lot of money out of it.If giving money to the conservatives and UKIP give him a chance to influence the outcome of the vote, then it's just marketing funds. He would not be alone in the trade of political donations for political influence. Russian money is also not alone.
The irony is brexit and the populist movements in the EU at the moment (in Italy) is about anti-elite, anti-corruption and yet, just look at the big funders. They are both arrogant and corrupt.

We arent all making noises Tom makes though. Tory scum and all that.
Well Tom has been joined by the BBC now.

A week ago they broadcast a TV program on BBC 4 titled "Jonathan Meades on Jargon" in which Meades used his ascerbic wit with graphics to attack misuse and distortion of the language, including by politicians. It wasn't far into the program when the graphic "Tory Scum" appeared, scrawled across the screen. Ten minutes in, having already portrayed Boris Johnson being defecated out of the rear of a horse as a way of calling him a turd, he launched into a withering assault on politicians such as Donald Trump and Theresa May. Throughout the rest of the one hour program politicians again came under attack from time to time and the foulest of language was shouted at times.

Considering that the BBC is effectively our state broadcaster and BBC 4 their premium serious channel, this surely must mean that Old Tom is now one of the establishment.

The program is available to listen to on the i-player on this link

Or if on a smart TV, use the i-player Search facility and after entering JONA the title of the program will appear in the prompts to be clicked on.

Yes in money making, but definitely stupid in the way I illustrated.
.
his target audience of this piece is not the politicians but the brexit voters.
In this, he is convincing therefore not stupid.

But his proposal is still stupid if impossible to implement. Surely the only Brexit voters this could convince would be the ones with no influence and therefore worthless for his purpose, those with some intelligence able to immediately see the flaw.

I am sure he knows that. People like Crispin Odey work with contracts all day long, he must know that the UK won't be free to do deals until brexit day. He just says what he thinks his audience likes to hear. On this, he is not alone, JRM suggests we won't pay any bill until we get what we want. BJ said the EU can go whistle. DD says we'll get Canada ++.
Magical thinking that may be, but music to the ears of some because deep down, we all know brexit is becoming less affordable the nearer we get to it.
