Are you not splitting hair here?
In the current climate, TM can only offer a binary choice, hard brexit as backstop while hoping for a soft brexit.
If I could hazard a guess, the EU wants it too.
Regrettably I am not splitting hairs. The speech by that Mr Bannerman, illustrates the mindset. It is this wishful thinking which has got us to a point some six months to go before a crucial decision time and no conclusions....

Mr Bannerman is an MEP, he has not any position in government, does not vote in our HoC and very soon, won't have a job. Why would his opinion matter more than mine?
The UK will have to find its way after brexit. Would it be free for all, no protection for industry, agriculture, fishery, labour, banking etc or a stable environment?
If TM is toppled, then the chance of a second referendum will vastly increase. JRM and his group know that.
I guess if there were a vote, most people would prefer stability.

An hour or more since posting ? Must be another " Ejection" break.

And from " Left foot forward"

Jeremy Corbyn suggested at the weekend that the Party’s economic programme, and specifically public ownership, could not be delivered while the UK was within the EU or Single Market. Such claims are, to put in bluntly, simply untrue.

So write to Corbyn OG...put him straight. Perhaps he has a hidden agenda to leave EU, or perhaps Corbyn knows EU better than we think ?Who knows, but whichever we will never see a labour government with either Corbyn in charge or with current policies.

Good for you... Unfortunately a sea fog thing is keeping the sun from showing much at my coastal location.

From the Express this morning
"
Theresa May is 'absolutely DETERMINED' to deliver 'HARD Brexit' in massive Remoaner snub
THERESA May declared she is “absolutely determined” to leave the European Union customs union and the single market, as the Prime Minister took a strong stance on Brexit.

Anyone care to speculate if there's any truth in that? and what exactly she means?
Damned if I know!

From the Independent
"
Brexit: Rebel Tories say they have enough MPs to push Theresa May into staying in single market – if Labour backs it
Exclusive: It comes as a major row is brewing over the Labour leadership's lack of support for the single market "

What a shambolic state of affairs. No Government and no opposition as we slide faster and faster down the steepening slope into disaster.

I like the way you think......only trouble is that the other parties might see that as bribery which probably breaks some rule or other in the T&C.o_O

Tom
Maybe. But they would not be telling them which way to vote, only encouraging them to vote.
I was going to suggest fining people who didn't vote but that would be political suicide. Maybe a mixture of carrot and stick would work.

It would not be illogical to withhold benefits grants etc for people who without good cause, fail to show up at a polling station .. the local courts wil prosecute if one fails to show for jury duty.
The effect would be a major increase in spoiled votes , but that's fair...

Afraid I must totally disagree. The point is to make voting worthwhile with voters actually been involved. Uf we had politicians we could actually trust putting forward a spectrum. Of choices perhaps voters would vote..
Making people turn upto vote with threats or incentives would be a democracy in name only.
if labour actually opposed electorate would see point in turning out..as it is it is futile.

Zathlan, people are lazy ,They might want to do the right thing , whatever that is, but competition for attention means that there is always something more immediately interesting to do than walk down to the local school and wait in line. All the more so if they don't really believe that it will change things. Your first past the post system and single seat encourages apathy. Our system of multiple seats, and proportional representation means that almost everybody's vote counts , even multiple times, as various candidates are eliminated and their votes redistributed.
A penalty for not doing their civic duty will encourage participation.

Untrue, they are opposing the Tories with these key policies:

Wanting a Customs Union with the EU after Brexit.

Renationalise Britains railways.

Investment instead of austerity.

These and many others are completely the opposite of Tory policies.
