Boris making rash promises again in the independent
"Boris Johnson says he is prepared to resign over the customs union – and this time he might actually go through with it"

How odd that in the past he said the opposite!

http://uk.businessinsider.com/boris-johnson-single-market-brexit-campaign-customs-union-2018-1

Johnson again backed a close single market relationship with the EU in 2013.

"Personally, I would like to stay in the single market," he said during a visit to Paris.

"We need to stay in the council of ministers of the internal market. In my view, the British have done good things for Europe."

He added: "We have the free movement of goods meaning French companies can buy important things like infrastructure in the UK and we benefit."

So is finally the penny starting to drop? Is this brexit for slow learners?.

yet another politicians' promise.
I don't think he'd do it - he knows as soon as he is out of the government, TM will go straight to a soft brexit even before the transition starts.

If he does it will be nothing to do with a customs union. He never wanted the Foreign Secretary job and hates doing it, so any excuse will do to get out of it. It would also detach him from the vulnerable Theresa May, handy for the future when she is thrown out by her own party.

He wouldn't care. The important thing to understand about Boris Johnson is that he has no principles whatsover.

Only Boris Johnson's interests matter to him.

It's over 10 days since this became known and I don't understand how Macron and May are still in employment. Surely their lies have been proven for all the world to see?

By definition a lie is an untruth intended to deceive. If that report is actually by Robert Fisk, one of the few journalists whose integrity I totally respect, then it indicates that the western allies were premature in their judgements and acted on incomplete information, not that they lied.

that's the point, he knows that the majority of voters have now realised that his promises are not deliverable, can't have cake and eating it and the only person to go whistle is he. If he leaves the cabinet, that will leave Gove as the only credible candidate for the top job.

In the DE today:

'It's a lose-lose situation!' SCRAP Brexit if UK can't leave customs union'
https://www.express.co.uk/news/politics/952281/brexit-news-uk-eu-customs-union-new-zealand

that sort of sums up the situation, there is now far less support for hard brexit.

It doesn't indicate premature judgment. Fisk's report could equally be correct if the Western allies were lying and either staged an attack treatment simulation or knew it was staged.

I firmly believe our authorities were involved in a deceit, due to the early attempt to include Russia in the blame. It fits a recent pattern of Western behaviour, maligning Russia and its associates in any way possible.

I agree and I think you could have left out the word 'hard'.

The public is sick and tired of the whole business and apart from the racists whose only motivation was wrapped up in the flying of the flag of St George and marching through immigrant areas, the rest just want potholes mended and the NHS sorted. They really don't give a toss what colour our passports are but would prefer to know they were made in Britain!

Trouble is the report was from Red Ice. At best a questionable source. I believe Red Ice founder is/ was a white supremacist??? and oddly the site has been responsible for both anti Semitic and anti Muslim posts. ??? The stance taken over this issue is at odds with their previous standpoints, but either way not a reliable media outlet. ( but such things seem quite elusive)

Interesting news emerging:

British supermarket chains Sainsbury's and Asda in merger talks - although both brands expected to be retained.

It seems ASDA which was 'sold off' nearly a decade ago to a bunch of venture capitalists based in the north of England is involved in a merger with Sainsburys. Why am I thinking this will not be in either the British shoppers' or the taxpayers' interest?

I agree not in our interests, putting twice as much of our Supermarkets in the American hands of Walmart (who own ASDA) and our supermarket shopping profits mostly going to Germany and the USA.

In Brexit terms, not exactly "taking back control".

I did some cursory research before I posted and it wasn't entirely clear whether Walmart sold off all or just part of the ASDA business in 2009.
They purchased ASDA back in 1999 if I remember correctly what the web article said. It all looks a bit as if there is some kind of tax wheeze afoot!

What I read earlier suggested it was more Sainsbury taking over Asda - but with uncertainty about Walmart's interest in the enlarged Sainsbury.

Interesting! this was on 21st January in the Guardian
"
Twitter admits far more Russian bots posted on election than it had disclosed
Company says it removed more than 50,000 accounts and reported them to investigators, marking latest upward revision of figures
Twitter has admitted that more than 50,000 Russia-linked accounts used its service to post automated material about the 2016 US election – a far greater number than previously disclosed.

Announcing the discovery in a post to its website late on Friday, the company said the posts had reached at least 677,775 Americans, all of whom would be receiving a warning by email.

Twitter said it had removed the 50,258 accounts linked to Russia and turned over details to congressional investigators who are looking into Moscow’s interference with the US election campaign."
Now we have this claim from the Sunday Times
"
The Sunday Times said an investigation it conducted in conjunction with Swansea University had identified 6,500 Russian accounts tweeting supportive messages for Labour and denigrating the Conservatives.

It said that many of the accounts, masquerading under English names, were internet "bots" programmed to bombard voters with orchestrated political messages.

Labour dismissed the report saying that it was not aware of receiving any support from automated bots during the campaign.

A spokesman said the party "categorically" did not pay for any automated bots and was not aware of any of its supporters doing so.

The Sunday Times said it discovered overwhelming support for Labour and Jeremy Corbyn from the Russian social media accounts with nine out of 10 messages about the party supporting its campaign.

Its research found that 80% of the automated accounts had been created in the weeks leading up to polling day on June 8 and were particularly active at key points in the campaign.

Apparently there are worse Russian Bots out there than Trump!
Assuming this to be true, somehow the Press will be busting a blood vessel trying to prove Corbyn asked for their support.
The sheer cheek of Foreigners attempting to influence Public opinion is breathtaking, when we already have Murdoch to do that, thank you very much!
Why this sort of thing could undermine the power of the Press to pervert public opinion!

My take is that this is just another attack on Social Media, and these sort of bot messages are nothing new, certainly not as harmful as Cambridge Analytica

NO BREXIT: House of Lords poised to derail EU exit TOMORROW as Tory rebels back Labour
A MOVE by Peers to change flagship Brexit legislation threatens to block the UK’s break with Brussels, it has been warned. Peers in the largely pro-Remain chamber are to vote on what is being dubbed the “no Brexit” amendment to the EU (Withdrawal) Bill tomorrow.

Tell me why shouldn't there be a no Brexit amendment any way?
Why are we committed to Brexit on such a marginal victory based on lies deceit and Psycholgical warfare?
Worse the conditions of leaving negotiated by incompetents?

The European Union
Yesterday a very important business leader said on a TV show I was watching: "Once we have gotten rid of the English, thanks to brexit, the EU project will get back on the rails, many of its current problems are because the English wanted things done their way"...

Well I never!
