Bosch Classic about to die?

Update..
Decided to give the selling dealer another shot and was surprised with the positive response. Bike is in shop and they expect a 10 days turnaround . With regard to my previous contact issues 12 months ago, I was told "that's why he doesn't work here any more".
Workshop has all the bosch gear and they don't forsee any problems.. so maybe the trusty steed can live on....

Worth a try, it's just one like this one with a centre bore of 21.3 mm (that needs double checking by someone) instead of the standard 20 mm bore.

does it have any makers name on it or is it just blank?

can find every size bar 21.3mm so there custom made or Bosch are machining them to fit.

I forget now, but I did get a price from the far east for a batch of them, Again I forget how many was a minimum, 500 perhaps more.

Oh hang on NBR bearings I think. Not sure this is exactly the right bearing, but NBR do make custom bearings.21.4 bearing.JPG

Looking at this broken down makes the whole thing look relatively simple, which makes it odd that spare parts are not available. .
Interesting how Bosch copied Panasonic with much of this assembly and their torque sensing method. Can't blame them, it was always the best.

Panasonic don't make any spares available either, but have had the good sense to use standard bearings, available everywhere.

It was the ISIS compatible spindle that dictated the centre bore size, however cartridge bearings that fit in a normal bottom bracket are smaller in both diameter and width. Drawings of them list the size between 21.2mm and 21.4 mm in diameter.

Speaking to an engineer this morning about this, he suggested two companies to try.

Kent Bearings and Simply Bearings.

He also said that in the past he has been caught out when searching for bearing sizes, because most are measured in metric. He said that as a long short, re measure the bearing using imperial and then search. Don't convert the measurement using a computer though, as it might be incorrect to the bearing size.

Thanks Eddie, I tried several large bearing retailers, all came back and said it was a custom bearing. I did also look at imperial bearings at the time, but nothing matched.

Is it possible to have the shaft ground to fit a standard bearing?
No because the crank arms wouldn't then be a good fit on 20mm axle. You could make a bush to hold one of the smaller ISIS bearings though. and it is possible to buy that special NBR bearing if you're really stuck, at the time I wasn't convinced it was the right size at 21.4 mm. but it's probably okay.
I'll worry when I wear the next drive bearing out in 4000 miles or so. Perhaps there'll be a easy supply by then.
