8fun crank drive kit

That's not so bad then - about £300 per kit. Who's going to do a group-buy?

That's reminded me to get some new spectacles. I smashed my varifocals at Bristol, and now struggle to see my PC screen. I have to hold these ones three inches in front of my face to get it in focus.

I'd be interested.

I've just joined this site with the intention of building a mid-drive. I work at a university where 20 staff have just been loaned Raleigh Dover ebikes for a couple of months (with the Panasonic mid drive) as part of a research project to examine usage. All bikes are fitted with GPS trackers. I was skeptical about ebikes beforehand but the Panasonic drive is awesome. I used to drive in to work every day - 3 miles/very hilly - now I e-bike every day, and I havent used the car for two weeks, so I'll be sorry to hand the bike back at the end of the trial period.

But I dont really want to pay a couple of grand when I can build one for under £500 using a second hand bike (Actually I'd prefer a bike that looked old and tatty, so its less likely to get nicked)

The BBS01 is one option. (Is anyone buying 4?) The other option is to convert a hub drive. I have access to state of the art machining equipment (CNC controlled plasma/laser cutters) so if anyone can provide any drawings I could supply the parts.. Just thinking aloud...

Hi nippynoo,

Welcome to the forum.

There is no Group Purchase section on the forum - you would need to organize it yourself by asking members directly in a new post.

If you are looking for one off motor you could Private Message Jane (membership name MWMotor) and see if she is still offering them singly, although it would work out more expensive.

I am thinking about 2 of them my self, one for my giant revive semi-recumbent, and one for the GF's hybrid style bike,

My bike should be no probs, has a 7 speed nexus hub and a 48t chainwheel atm, but my GF's bike has derailleur gears with a 3 wheel crank, would have to loose the 3 wheel crank for this kit,
that wouldn't bother her much, she hardly changes gear anyway, so i am thinking a crank drive may not be the best for her.

I see that whoosh bikes sell this kit for £330, but with no throttle, but (i hope) the kit's are already in the UK, so no risks in the mail.

And if anyone wants to see inside on of there kits:
Video Wartung BBS01 - YouTube

ATM i am undecided fully, my bike will deffo have a crankdrive motor, the bike is heavy, i'm heavy, my dog is heavy (tow her in a trailer) and this kit looks the neatest, much neater looking than the ones that drive the crank with an exposed chain and look like a bit of heath robinson style experimentation :)

I notice that in Germany there seem to be a few more crankdrive motor kits like this, sunstar seem to be the one the bafang people copied?
Electric Bike Sales - Shop Online for Electric Bikes, Electric Vehicles and Cycle Accessories - Sunstar iBike SO3 kit
but that kit is almost tripple the price, and 100%, and it looks like no throttle option available, torque sensing pedal drive only as it's a german product (i think)

BUT, they do offer the choice of chain wheel, only 39, 48 and 52 teeth, but at least that's an option, the bbs01 is only 48 i think, be some people have been saying that's too big for their bike and want a smaller wheel, so i wonder if for those people the 39t wheel from the sunstar would fit, as it looks like it is the originator for the bbs01?

Not that i think i need to change the chain wheel for my bike, 20 inch wheels, right now it has a 48t chainwheel, stock is 16t back sprocket, just changed to an 18t sprocket to allow me to actually pedal the bike from a stand up a slight hill.

i've got 15 mm, the chain can probably go right another mill or so before it catches the side of the swingarm tunnel it runs through,

if i have to, i'll cut a small part of the outer swing arm out for the chain,
but, i was measuring from the edge of the nut that secures the crank into the BB, so it may well fit as i note the bbs01 is only tightened from the left hand side,

worst case i'd have to take a little bit off the right hand side of the bottom bracket housing,

but i have an angle grinder and a big hammer, i can make it fit :) actually have a mini lathe, but i dont think it has the swing over the bed to spin the bike :)

The Sunstar is Japanese and conforms to Japanese law, meaning no throttle and not very powerful. Japanese pedelec law has almost no leeway for designers.

as I was reading this morning another thread about a member looking to buy a bike for commuting with an 8-Fun SWXH motor, I wonder that now that Bafang sell EN15194 crank motors at Chinese price - is there any point buying a bike with an SWX motor?

I agree Trex, for commuting you could do a DIY conversion of a bike for about £800 or there about with full suspension - see Cyclezee latest blog posting.

Hi t3sla,

Thanks, interesting find - internal sine wave controller and more crank wheel options - I assume these are future developments - getting better all the time.

Is it possible for you to point us to your source of that information?

Keep up Colin, that was last week;)
Just pointing out the possibilities John, I thought I would mention it as it did not appear on the forum.

I like the idea if you do not like the finished bike you can easily transfer it over to another and reinstate the old one back to original.

Hi I have ordered A 48 volt 500 watt version for testing from Bafang we will limit to 22MPH My only fear is how long the chain and gears will last

we will give the kit to one off my customers who destroys anything he rides

He has had our new 500 watt CST motor for 4 months running 48 volts with 20 amp controller limited to 22MPH NO problems We call that our Baby kit

The mid drive Kit will be with a 48 volt 10AH battery with optional 15 AH and 20AH battery

From the horse's mouth, specifically the '14 product catalog.

The unit has always had a sine wave controller (the key to its relatively silent operation)

Annoyingly the information provided by most B2C online traders isn't clear and this chart clarifies what's currently on offer from bafang.

I'll be really excited to watch this product mature and gain increased functionality (torque sensing)

Also thanks to to the user who posted the output dyno results, interesting read

I guess that 100 Nm torque is at the crank, which has a diameter of about 10 inches, so torque at the back wheel would be about 29 Nm at the back wheel in first gear with 44/34T gearing.
