This Scott looks like a good deal

Good point, Stu. It probably is the previous CX motor. Still a decent deal, assuming the other listed specs are correct.

Best e-bike for smallish woman exploring hilly countryside? Leaning towards Boardman HYB 8.9E

You certainly don't want a full-on mountain bike. The bikes you are considering would be just the job for roads, cycle paths, and well-made tracks. They are, however, different. The Boardman is a light assist ebike which may well be sufficient for a relatively light rider, and will certainly...

First e-bike, largely commuting but want reasonable all rounder

You could buy a mountain bike, but bear in mind a bike for commuting needs mudguards, a rack (usually) and lights. It seems pointless buying a mountain bike only to set about turning it into a hybrid by the addition of extras, although lots of people do it. Wide, knobbly tyres are also...

    Bosch ALP smaller chainring

You could remove a few links if you are confident to do so. But on t'other hand, provided the rear mech is not folded too far back on itself in top gear, why bother?

    Which e bike?

The motors are different, but broadly similar. The CX and Shimano are the most powerful, although I suspect the Active Line Plus would be sufficient for your needs, even if you need to use Turbo setting a little more often. It comes down to the style of bike you prefer. The flat bar bikes are...

    ebike for communiting and trails

It's not clear how far you are commuting, but if it's 10 miles each way, the smaller battery may not be sufficient for a round trip. Charging twice a day may drive you nuts, not least because you would have to remember to lug the charger to and from work, or buy a spare. Buy a bike with the...

    Wisper Thumbs up for Wisper

David from Wisper is not from a bike retailing background. Put another way, he understands the customer has a reasonable expectation of service when parting with a grand or two. Too many bike shops are still like the classic Not the Nine O'clock News hi-fi shop sketch in that they take...

    What's happening at 50 Cycles?

So having had two dodgy importers, they've decided to go with 50 Cycles. I wonder what the Spanish is for hat trick.

Risk of getting your bike stolen in London?

I reckon parking your bike in the same bay at the same time day after day almost guarantees it will get stolen. Get the GoCycle and take it into work. They ride nicely, so you won't be missing out.

This Scott looks like a good deal

A lot of the sub £2,000 Bosch bikes have the smaller battery/older design battery or the lower spec Active Line Plus motor. That Scott has a 500 Powertube, a CX motor, and is 11-speed. Excellent spec for the money, as you say.

R&M Super charger GX rear pannier rack paint wear issues

Some small scuffs on the rack of the Charger in my avatar. The rest of the paint seems to holding up as well as any other bike I've had.

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

It is, although the companies on here have had their moments. Anyone remember the Wisper bike with the Union Jack on the seat tube?

Woosh Just ordered a Whoosh faro through the cycle to work scheme

I suspect they physically take your credit card as security and put £1 on it to make sure it works.

    Ebco ebikes.

I tried an Ebco hub motor bike at my local bike shop. I thought it was decent for the money, and if that was my budget I would certainly consider it. Slightly more worrying is the Ebco website is still down. It was down before the OP posted, so that will be at least a week now, if not two...

    Ebco ebikes.

An Ebco rep told my local bike shop they are dropping the TransX motor due to reliability problems. The bike shop has sold a handful and had a couple of problems that have been fixed. That was while TransX was still on new Ebco bikes. Spares for TransX, at least from Ebco, are likely to...

Hub or Mid Drive? Any views?

The Bosch system uses cadence, torque, and speed sensors. One of it's strengths is 'set and forget' - put it on tour setting and ride it like an ordinary bike. I take the smooth power delivery for granted, but it does make some other crank drives feel clunky. Back to David's new bikes, which...

Picking the second bike is worse than the first

Did you have a look at the Apollo ebikes when you were in Halfords? I'm not keen on Chinese electrics, but that's pretty much where you are for your budget. The Apollo ebikes I saw for around £700 looked surprisingly decent for the money. Basic 36v electrics, proven simple LED display...

    What's happening at 50 Cycles?

Seems to me there is no good reason to buy from 50 Cycles. I've been 'stooging' around ebikes for about 10 years, buying and selling several in that time. When I first started looking for an ebike, quality crank drives were thin on the ground - next to no one stocked them. At that point, 50...

    Rockrider E-ST500

Up to you, of course. The '1x' gearing on the mountain bike is very low - wouldn't be so bad if it had a mountain triple up front. At the very least, I suspect you will want to change the tractor tyres for something with a shallow tread. Schwalbe balloons such as Big Ben or Moto-X is the...
