    Simon Cowell ebike accident

I was interested to read this https://uk.news.yahoo.com/simon-cowell-pictured-broken-arm-bike-accident-143209542.html to see if anyone else other than us realises that an S-Pedelec is a legal moped. He skidded on a damp piece of road & came off? Was not wearing a helmet & bearing in mind...

    Highway code changes

I've not noticed any difference so far. I've just got back from my evening ride to the shops (less traffic & shops almost empty). On the main road I was in my usual left hand wheel rut with 3 cars coming towards me, 1 & 2 pass, then the large BMW coming up behind squeezes past at the same time...

    Hierarchy of road users

So the new rules come into force on Saturday 29 January 2022, introducing a Hierarchy of road users - all very laudable but it appears to be guidance only with no penalties, so if you end up in Court the judge will take it into account, but for the other million occasions it was breached nothing...

Why car drivers DO NOT see cyclists

I saw this article & thought, oh good, then after reading it's the usual advice. https://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/news/2022-01-24/bu-docbike-research-suggests-motorcycle-collisions-could-be-caused-riders-car-drivers-seeing-different-things Then I saw these & after reading thought aha...

    Highway code changes

I have to cross a few side roads that are traffic light controlled but have no pedestrian lights, also the lights are shielded against the sun, so making it impossible to see their colour from the side. So, in theory, when the traffic is stationary the lights must be red & it should be safe to...

    e bike fires

I had thought that these were under control now but some recent fires https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10423219/Homeowners-lucky-escape-e-bike-EXPLODED-sparked-house-blaze.html and this...

    Best security locks?

Get a rear parcel rack & buy the thickest D locks you can. Don't worry about the weight - you have a motor! I always take the battery with me, as who is going to nick a ebike & then spend hundreds to buy a battery that might not be suitable as how can you sell a non working ebike - its a bike...

    low sun

I have found that a cap with a peak or visor works really well. As it provides shade to your eyes & normal sunglasses are then sufficient to remove glare from wet roads.

Last Bike I rode was 30 years ago.

Yes when I got my first bike I too thought the key would be like a car key, instead the batteries I have used have an on/off button, with the key purely to lock into its holder.

Last Bike I rode was 30 years ago.

my hint is when you get a bike try a very short ride, then repeat as it will take your body some time to adapt. The next day repeat slightly longer so by the end of the week you can ride without problems.

Rear lights: which is best, continuous or flashing?

looking at the link the light appears to be a torch ie not a dipped headlight with full beam potential.

Rear lights: which is best, continuous or flashing?

I agree about the icy conditions but what jumped to my attention was your comment about street lighting - I had to think what you meant - I mainly ride on country lanes with no lights apart from my cycle lights. We get so used to our normal that we think it applies to everyone else as well.

Rear lights: which is best, continuous or flashing?

I find the opposite. During the day the roads are busy & RTV can judge widths so will do close overtakes. At night my combination of lights (steady centre & flashing at the width of the handlebars) & fewer cars leads to overtaking as if I were a car. Today I took some items to the local tip (we...

“Exceptional Hardship” loophole allows drivers to kill..and kill again

Research has highlighted the shocking scale of a loophole that allows dangerous drivers to escape automatic driving bans; almost one in five drivers who accumulate 12 penalty points manage to escape bans by arguing disqualification would result in “exceptional hardship”. A Parliamentary question...

Bike cutting out when battery on 3 bars

Have a look at my posts to see the advice I received. https://www.pedelecs.co.uk/forum/threads/intermittent-fault-on-battery-causing-loss-of-power.35875/

    Punctures

Well as the weather is starting to turn I've taken my MP off the front & replaced it with a winter tyre, as I found that MP grip on frost was not the best. I also have a set of studded tyres for the extremely unlikely possibility that we get snow/ice that hangs around longer than overnight.

    Bicycles to pay road tax

A study by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) found that essentially, road damage was related to the 4th power of the relative loads. So 2 to the 4th power is(2x2x2x2 = 16 times as much road damage. If a bike and its rider weigh in at 200 pounds, and the car at 4,000 pounds. The weight of...
