The Negative (IMHO) Trend Towards Built-in Pannier Racks

Designed properly, and there is no reason why the length can't be suitable, the mass of metal built into the frame serving as a rack can't structurally also locate the rear wheel. I am not a fan of adding on bits serving a single function, preferring an integrated design. That said, the design...

    Mid motor vs Hub motor.

The power [Watts] and torque [Nm] thing ought to be easily understood. Power brings in the time element, how fast or how slow doing something is achieved. Doing the task at all is where torque is involved. Agricultural tractors up till the latest fast ones had small powered engines, but could...

    eBike demo scam

Seems it is prudent to only allow demos to those willing to submit to the dealer taking a "mug shot". Over 20 years ago I had to for access to military bases, despite having ID documentation.

Discussions started about legalising e-scooters, could this mean insurance insurance for e-bikers?

I note Portsmouth and Southampton are named as "trial" zones, I have to wonder if those who made that decision had any idea of how pot holed our roads are? Hit one of the craters or swerve out avoiding one, even at 16 mph will bring some real risks.

False crossbar for carrying e.bikes on a bike carrier

With most caravans, the "payload" is far too challenged to cope with just the basics, to have the reserves for another 50 kgs of e bikes.

    Holiday Pottering

Yes, thanks for sharing. I had missed picking these up back in November, great.

    Inverters and charging your eMTB

I agree the vehicle's battery is not going to be done any favours with the charge currents the alternators can punch out, but the alternators are sized for the high current draws of the kit the vehicle has, ie seat heating, lighting etc. Even a 400 Watt output inverter is going to take over 33...

    Inverters and charging your eMTB

"Neither Solar nor a T5 alternator (14A) will replenish that in a hurry: " Are you sure the T5 ever got just 14A alternators? I have not got a T5, but thought even their small 1.9 Tdi VW engine came with a minimum of a 90 A alternator. Plus there were options of higher rated versions. Is it...

    Inverters and charging your eMTB

Whilst the charger you said drew 180 Watts when connected to the battery, here in blowing the inverter you did not get as far as exposing the inverter to that, from what you said. Yes? You did, however, expose the inverter to the charger's off load inrush starting current, that could easily...

    Inverters and charging your eMTB

I had checked (2016) and was told then not to use a modified sine wave inverter on my Impulse charger. The inference though, was it screwing up the expensive charger. At the budget price of that 800Watt inverter, IMO it will be a long way off being a refined pure sine wave unit.

    The end of the Pedelec!

Seems they will forever be damned to the use of small wheels, and the limitations that come with them. I see them as a niche option for many not an overwhelming replacement of bikes as we know. Plus, their use on footways will IMO be short lived as their mass use by the inconsiderate will lead...

ok to drill 2 holes in frame?

I think I would use some form of wrap under strap fixed by the existing bottle fixings, rather than further weaken the structure of a bike never designed as a powered bike. The strap most likely made of metal, structurally probably selecting to use steel sheet.

    Wearing earphones while cycling

Is there not a one sided ear phone option, thus allowing the unused ear to sense some of what is audibly going on about? Or is the loss of stereo a step too far, even just for when cycling?

    Folding eMTBs

Is there not something of a challenge in having a folding mountain bike, particularly those shown where the fold is at the point of maximum bending moment? Is this not a case of "MTB style"?

Help! E-Bike Converstion for an ethusastic idiot.

Why two motors, because if both could drive, the most obvious logic of having two, the installed power could easily take it over the legal power limit to use on highways/ cycleways open to the public, without insurance and certification. Then there is the twist, would the employer want to be...

    Help! Best lock?

I take the battery off as well, on the basis the bike less a battery has more limited resale value. But I never rest comfortably leaving it, a downside of e-bike ownership.

Looking to buy, at Ezebike £1.3k and Argos Chinese £550 any suggestions

An observation; it would not be legal without the correct licence and what that brings, to use a 1000W on UK or EU highways, so that also includes bridleways. The complications of getting it licenced could be a challenge.

    bike bus

"they have increased bike space from two to ten bikes, and plan 20 bike space by febuary." https://www.scotsman.com/news/transport/first-scottish-bike-bus-route-launched-from-berwick-to-edinburgh-1-5053267 Great idea, but my reading is that the space is for two bikes in each bus, the increase...

    Death of the derailleur?

A natural step would be to integrate a "motor" into the package. Then, with a Gates belt it all becomes to me very appealing, at least in concept.

    broken saddle

"Warranty cannot and should not cover all reasons." Completely agree, nor should the CRA 2015, where issues are not design, manufacturing or dealer caused problems. "The only time I've ever seen a broken seat bolt is on my own bike when my seat kept coming loose, so I did the bolt up nice and...
