Bikes like many things are riddled with potential single point failure, features, it does not reflect a flawed design, it reflects more a considered design approach involving a huge chunk of "probability of failure". A puncture, a failed road wheel axle or rim, a headstock or even the frame...

Is not the issue simply condensation forming when the thing is chilled by the colder rain, rather than any inference about required to be "watertight"? Complete sealing has its failings too, and needs to be done perfectly and reliably plus needs to be sealed with perfectly dried air or more...

Plus it does not run askew twisting under load to a side or be forced to move off the sprokets and can be shielded from dirt and water. But, still I much rather the Gates Carbon belt drive on several counts, not least that compasionate bit of compliance it adds into the drive train, good news...
