    Pedelec Law - The Details

l've been to London recently and the pedelec laws are being universally flouted, with ebikes doing way more than 15.5mph, plus ebikes that don't need pedalling, in abundance .

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

An ordinary bike is still a bigger lump than a folder, even with both wheels off. My Kona takes up the whole boot space in a car(and you have to fold the seats down) The removed wheels need to be stored and they are large circles to find a home for. With my friends folding bike it will fit in...

This was one of the reasons l wanted folding Ebikes, less hassle

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

The caravan we are buying is called a Basecamp 2 and it has the facility to store two bikes inside while being towed. The door is at the rear of the van and is quite wide, so you can get a bike in. lf you fold up the seats there are lashing points on the floor to secure the bikes.

    Halford's ebikes

A lot of it is about looking after the bike, l am on various forums and have read the "motor failure" threads Often posted by owners who hammer their Ebikes off road, through water, in all weathers, covered in mud after every ride etc l've got a Shimano E8000 motor and have had none of the...

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

We've never owned a caravan before so this year will be our first outing! I'm taking a towing course and have a lot to learn about hitching up, nose weights, connecting up the caravan etc. The spare room is filling up with accessories that it seems we will need. l've decided against the £450...

    Battery advice

Absolutely. l managed 57 miles on my Kona when on holiday in Norfolk where it's flat as a pancake, and the battery still had one bar showing. For instance on a 25 mile ride l only climbed 100ft. Round here my shortest 7 mile loop has 1,000 feet of climbing.

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

Thank you l will keep looking, it's all new to me with regards budget bikes! My last two bikes have been premium branded mountain bikes and over ten times the price of these. The first was bought with a small inheritance and l sold that to buy the second one.

    Battery advice

lf you only turn the motor on when needed, such as on hills, and then use as little assistance as you can get away with, then you will approach the claimed maximum range of the bike. My Ebike claims 50 mile range but keeping the assist on "medium" 90% of the time and riding in hilly terrain...

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

Maximum nose weight on my vehicle is 150kg The idea behind folding ebikes is they can be stored in the vehicle while we are in the caravan, or in the caravan when we are out and not using them.

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

Fair enough. l would test ride one but would have to buy it online, and then return it if l didn't like it. lt needs to be a folding bike for a couple of reasons, taking with the caravan, and also going on the train. Currently l am looking at getting the Mirider, which l have tested and was...

    Are E-bikes overpriced?

Sorry yes let me clarify my post. My comment about the cheapest being the best value was really referring to the cheapest in a particular range. For instance Specialized do a full suspension Ebike at around £5,000 They also do one at £8,000 and one at over £10,000 While the more expensive...

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

There's definitely no twist and go throttle as it's got those generic "ergonomic" grips. lt says it's got a digital display and there's three assist modes. Just wondering why it's so cheap. l guess it's quality of parts and battery etc "Hand assembled in the U.K." may well mean "Unpacked the...

    Whirlwind folding Ebike

Has anyone any experience of the Whirlwind folding Ebike? Apparently a Scandinavian design, assembled in the U.K. and seems remarkable value at £450. Disc brakes, 250w rear hub motor, 20" wheels, 16kg What am l missing? lt's 1/3 the price of the Mirider l am about to order. Anybody got one?

    Fake chains off eBay

I've seen whole fake bikes on Ebay, one in particular is the "Cube" branded Ebike at around £1,000 Looking closely it's clearly nothing that's ever come out of the Cube brand. Maybe the factory that makes the genuine bikes is tossing fake bikes out of the back door when Cube aren't looking.

    Are E-bikes overpriced?

With Ebikes the cheapest model with the motor and suspension that you want (front and rear, front only or none) is generally the best value.

    Battery advice

You shouldn't be able to run the battery completely flat as the BMS will shut down the bike before this happens. lf you do get back from a ride with the battery down to under 10% it's important that you don't leave it in a discharged state, as that can damage it. Charge it ASAP.

    Are E-bikes overpriced?

The non-serviceability of Ebike motors is a major issue, although there are some companies who claim to be able to repair them. l fear that if my Shimano E8000 fails l will end up paying the best part of £1,000 for a replacement

    Are E-bikes overpriced?

l've had a few Kona over the years. l had a 1993 Cinder Cone which cost £700 for a rigid bike with V brakes. after that l had one of their early FS bikes. The one l have now seems okay. I actually paid £4500 because it was last years model. At the full retail price of £5600 l would have been...
