That's not strictly correct. My bike is legal and yet I can manage average speeds of 18 mph on some of my rides that don't include extreme hills, they still have plenty of less steep climbs though.

Very well, despite illness it will get me up any hill round here with relative ease. I've been up Winnats at around 8 mph in 2nd gear catching, passing and leaving two very fit roadies in the process. The hills really hammer the battery though.

It wasn't too bad, I didn't much enjoy riding back up though, as I started the climb the range meter said I had 15 miles, at the top it said 1 mile, and the climb is less than a mile!

Managed to log a gravity assisted 50.5 mph the other day, not bad for a hybrid.

Exactly as Rob says with regard to the gear change, you soon get used to it. Also check the adjustment of the gears after a few miles, line the yellow lines up in the little window in fourth using the adjuster on the changer.
