    One big hill

Sometimes it's cheaper to borrow money and buy the right thing rather than have to buy twice.

    One big hill

Does your company use the cycle to work scheme, or could they be persuaded too? That would save you some money and let you pay it back over (I think) 2 years.

I've been offered an old Powabyke, think it's one of the first models but it needs some TLC

It won't be admired by me I'm afraid. It was the Powabyke that first got me into building electric bikes. I saw one and thought 'great idea, but why does it have to be so fugly?'.

I've been offered an old Powabyke, think it's one of the first models but it needs some TLC

Ouch, my eyes! I'm sure they were OK in their day, but things have moved on a long, long way since then. If you have nice road bikes I think you will find the powabyke to be heavy, cumbersome and clunky. By all means try it, but keep in mind that modern electric bikes are nothing like that...

bike lcd milage vs garmin edge differ

Measure the route on a Google map (I use Maps Ruler on Android, or Where's The Path on a desktop). Then you'll know which is wrong. My money's on the GPS being correct.

    Who was right?

You might want to brush up on your cycling skills here. All advice I have ever read advises filtering on the right as a preference. Here's an example, from Cycle scheme: https://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/community/how-to/filtering

    Why Derailleurs gears?

I'm waiting for the Chinese to come up with a rear hub motor with integrated 9 speed hub gears with electronically controlled shifting and braking.

    Who was right?

Nonsense. The cyclist has every right to be on the outside when overtaking. I agree that you need to be extremely careful when going so, but that doesn't mean you have to always stay on the left. One could argue that the cyclist was just cautious enough. He avoided injury to himself despite...

What do you think of my new bike-rack bag?

Fortunately crime is very low where we live. I don't normally lock the bike/car/house. I only lock the wife up when she's been reading too much E.L. James.

Could the forum width be increased?

As SW says, use 'Toggle Width' (Two diagonal arrows) at the bottom.

What do you think of my new bike-rack bag?

Here's the bike I built for my wife, complete with custom battery box. Unsurprisingly, it carries a battery inside. On top it carries my 8 year old son for local errands. (when he's not riding his own bike). Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

    wiring a thumb throttle

They should be OK. If the old ones were knackered then it might go a bit quicker, and should go a bit further. Had you asked before purchasing most of us would have recommended saving the money and getting a lithium-ion battery. These give vastly improved range/much lighter weigh, or a bit of...

    Carrying a laptop?

Trust me, if you knew some of the places its been you wouldn't.

    Yes, that's how it works.

    Carrying a laptop?

I always carry my laptops in a dedicated laptop rucksack, regardless if I'm on the bike or not. I just bought a new one last week and its really good: http://uberlaptopbags.com/store/targus-drifter-ii-laptop-backpack/ I had the previous version for 15 years, and its still OK. I am quite hard...

    wiring a thumb throttle

That is rather telling. There's no such thing as a 'potentiometer switch'. As D8veh says, its almost certainly a hall effect device.

    wiring a thumb throttle

I don't think a hair dryer will be hot enough ( a hot air gun is the normal answer), but a lighter or other flame should work.

    Car inverter for bosh charger

Losses. When converting from 12vdc to 240vac there is a loss. Quite a large loss, somewhere around 70% efficient. Then there's another loss when you convert back from 240vac to 42vdc. Probably about 80%. So, you end up with 80% of 70%, or about 50% wasted. The dedicated charger also has...
