    I did the same with a pair of cheap panniers, except that the top hooks snapped, made new ones out of aluminium. I used reuseable cable ties to lock the panniers to the frame.

    I've read some me where, maybe here, that ordinary plod can't do much, it has to be a traffic cop that pulls you/inspects your bike.

    There are also wire loop anti thefts attachments that fit the ortlieb panniers, they would stop a quick theft but easily defeated with tools. I'm happy with the ortliebs after buying other types that failed.

    Re the OP and the beer, drink it before you set off then you don't have to carry it up the mountain. I haul a trailer full of shopping etc up to my house with a bbs01b, a 42t front cog and 34t rear lowest cog no problem.

    Why put people off mid motors. Just promote the carrying of a couple of links of chain. Certainly anyone who has fitted their own will be competent to sort a broken chain by the side of the road.
