    Time for a helmet camera?

GoPro have a special offer just now for subscribers (£50 annually, can be cancelled after year 1) of £299 for the latest Hero Black 11. That makes camera plus subscription same price as the 10. A secondhand 10 goes for £200+, depending on accessories.

    Battery advice

It'll be a learning experience for sure! If both motors are controlled by the same pas and / or throttle all I can see is unpredictable behaviour in the low grip conditions you are targeting. Like having front and rear brakes on a single lever. Being able to modulate the brakes separately is...

    Battery to fit a kit.

Yes, just be really careful to follow standard ways of using each type of connector. There are at least three types, cheapo bullets, XC60 and XC90, and Anderson power poles. Plenty of examples of all three online.

    Mirrors...or Not ?

A definite yes to right hand slightly convex such as Cateye BM 500. I used an Oxford mirror for half of my recent trip, before I snapped it off, which was flat and really poor in comparison. All that the bike shop had. New Cateye now fitted, and back to a good view.

    Full on touring

I would not dream of travelling so light.

Mid-drive chain and drive train wear measurements

Keep an eye open and be prepared to add links, and the 114 link unplated KMC X9 can usually be found for £12.99. Same goes for SRAM basic 11 speed chain. I only got three chains worth of wear, not three cassettes, out of my first chainring. 14,000 km in numbers. A 1x system with ebike loads is...

    Is one bike enough?

By all means have a spare bike, but first analyse what might go wrong, likelihood, how to fix, tools and spares that might be needed, defensive strategies to prevent failure and so on. Then much like fixing a puncture you can put yourself in the position that most things won't go wrong often...

    BBC and battery regulation

There is not usually enough left to analyse! So the most likely causes need to be identified and protected against all the way from design and manufacture of the cells, through construction of the pack and design/build of BMS and charger, mounting of battery on bike and so on. Fire during...

    Bike pumps and tyre pressure

My local Lidl has the £9.99 track pumps and a mini pump with gauge in stock just now. I bought the cheap track pump for home use last year, good enough if used carefully. Not up to the standard of Park Tools but fine for my occasional use.

    Time for a helmet camera?

I thoroughly recommend cameras, not just for reporting the 'worst offenders' but for seeing the prevalence or lack of it if you are lucky of bad driving. And some images you'll not capture any other way, which in housebound years to come might brighten the odd winter evening! It is a chunk of...

    Peddles advise

New or secondhand proper Shimano from eBay. Probably less than £20, great build quality, last forever. Search for 'shimano flat pedal' and things like this come up, and when you feel the silky smooth bearings you know you are dealing with quality. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/166245920241

Lithium-ion blaze aboard ship - specialist crews en route

I doubt if the cause of the start of the fire is known yet! There will be a formal inquiry which may take a year or more to report. An electric car battery burning is not the same thing as an electric car being the origin of the fire. 25 electric cars amongst 3000... Another car carrier fire...

    Ultimate bike camper?

A good example of satisfying one tightly defined design objective whilst being blind to everything else. Just like governments everywhere. 100km range without pedalling was the goal, but charging the 50Ah battery with what looks like a standard SANS 48V 2A charger will take 25 hours or so...

    Ultimate bike camper?

...and the design fail in the otr product is that it 'folds' to reduce length, whereas width and height are both more important when being towed.

    Ultimate bike camper?

Conversely, I've really enjoyed getting back into a tent with the weight limitations of backpacking removed! Just a few kilos of extra sleeping mats, clothes, sleeping bag make the difference to comfort, and allow proper food to be carried. The luxury I miss is an armchair, and a few extra cm...

    Ultimate bike camper?

I'd be concerned about the weight, which is the first limitation on range because of increased energy consumption, then aerodynamics which limits speed and so range, and then in that form, crosswind effect. The idea is worth exploring, but my starting point would be the solar roof, then making...

Why is my hydraulic disc brake so noisy?

If your Tektro is one of the models that use same pads as many Shimano models, try Shimano pads. BS05, resin, silent. I check alignment by eye with pads out as the caliper sometimes moves when tightening the bolts. If it looks parallel to my eyes, I have never had a noise problem with BS05 and...
