I think we would all like to pay as little as possible for our electric bikes! I still think we will have the current pricing breaks for a few years etc. i.e. cheaper Chinese egg-whisks from £200+, the intermediate models from specialist companies like PowaCycle and 50Cycles (iZip range) coming in at around £500 and the high-end bikes like the eZee Torq for £1000+

I see electric bike use increasing over the coming years but I believe mass take up won't happen until other forms of motoring become prohibitively expensive.

As for younger riders, we may see more of them if the government makes changes for those learning to drive i.e increase the age for obtaining a license and also forcing a much longer learning period.

Hi
rsscott as you say it will be a few more years yet we will have to wait:mad: concerning the curry izip i am not sure of my facts but i thought it was a steel frame and a heavy bike hence powacycle salisbury being a better all round bike but it is a personal choice.
I still hope one day that ezee bikes can produce their own brand bike low in weight good power and will cost £500 that will do me and get the younger generation also on electric bikes:( nigel.southampton.

And now for a pedelecs.co.uk exclusive

How about this one?

50cycles Electric Bikes - eZee Liv specification

It's our new eZee Liv bike, with a 36V NiMH battery, 3-speed hub gears and all the usual eZee bells and whistles. £545 but that includes delivery of course.

Nice one Tim, carry on like this and you'll end up taking the biggest part of the UK electric bike market.

Your range is looking more and more complete with each move.

I look forward to seeing the spec on your site soon. I'm going to have a stab in the dark by guessing this Liv model is more moderately powered but has a very long range. Am I right? :)

Following the link in Tim's post, it's got a 36V 9Ah NiMH battery, aluminium alloy frame and 200W brush motor with planetary gear reduction. There's a Shimano Nexus Inter-3 hub and 26" wheels. It's about 5Kg heavier than theTorq (29.2 Kg with the battery). Claimed range is "Up to 20 miles without pedalling. 20-30 miles combining power and pedalling."

Looks very interesting. :)

Excellent news there Tim/Scott. It's great to see another model appear in the line-up providing yet more choice for those looking for a way in to electric biking.

To the 50cycles people,

Is 50cycles a Cyclescheme partner? I would be interested in getting either a Torq or Liv through the scheme in the spring if you are.

Cheers,

Bit of a sneak preview for pedelec readers. We should have some in by mid-March. High hopes for this one!

High hopes? I'm not surprised. It looks brilliant for that price, and is now officially at the top of my 'possibles' list. :)

That looks like a very good price. Do you have to be quite tall though? Im only 5ft 5 which is one of the reasons i went for the Quando 2, i think with the Liv my feet would just about touch the floor.

Although it's a good price Gaynor, your Quando is a more advanced bike with a Hall effect motor which is both more efficient and very much more powerful. On those exceptionally steep hills we looked at in your Hastings area, the Liv would struggle, and the Quando would outrun it without any problems.

I think you're right that the Liv would be difficult for your height.

You'll soon have the Quando sorted and be able to enjoy it's power. Just watch out for those park gates though. :)

I think it may be too early to say it would struggle at the moment - none of the latest Livs has reached these shores yet! I say this because the motor, as used in the Rider, has already seen long service (30,000km+) in mountainous Switzerland, in the hands of an octogenerian, and that' was a much heavier bike with its VRLA battery. But yes, compared to the mighty Quando, it's a different matter.

But yes, compared to the mighty Quando, it's a different matter.
I entered these extracts and comments in the Liv thread:

"A to B reported the Rider as beginning to struggle a little below 10 mph,----------------- but that was with the bike weighing 10 kilos more, mainly due to the SLA battery,----------------- the Liv should be good for 12% (hills) with an average rider, as good as most."

So there is some evidence on which realistic comment can be made.

As said Tim, the comment above referred specifically to two exceptionally steep hills Gaynor and I discussed, on which nearly all hub motor bikes would be struggling. That's why I advised the Quando to Gaynor in the first place as the only full speed electric that would cope with that particular circumstance.

I see, i dont know much about the techical side, and really you get what you pay for I suppose

I think you're right that the Liv would be difficult for your height.
When my daughter (almost 12) tried the Quando breifly, her feet wouldnt reach the floor, I thought it would be slightly smaller, its perfect for my height though

Thanks again Flec, its just the waiting game

That's absolutely right Gaynor, companies aren't charities and every price has it's reasons. That's why not knowing much about the technical side isn't as big a problem as it might seem. Price is usually a fairly reliable indicator.
