How come it's only lycra or more lycra?

Still trying to find decent normal full length trousers for 'commuctin' and as I do not fancy sticking my larger-than-used-to-be butt in lycra the air and cause an accident what can a girl do?

No overtrousers.. Just want waterproof long trousers which are not lycra and are not shorts argh!

There is stupidly expensive Gore wear and nothing else ...

Ideally like normal trousers but waterproof and stretchy and high back meguess?

Grrrr

Wissy, I am no doctor but you may be anorexic like Joe Brand, in her own words, she looks in the mirror and sees a fat person.

Chances are that your larger than it used to be is perfectly fine.

I use lycra legging but complement with longish cycle shorts. Very warm and comfortable. If it rains, cheep pair of Halfords over trousers.

I use craghoppers waterproof trousers or I have some snowboarding trousers that work well but they cost a bit more

I just wear lycra shorts with some regular longish shorts over the top, knee warmers / roubaix 3/4s if it's cold. If it rains I get wet (or put on Altura Apex waterproof trousers which have velcro at the bottom to stop them catching on a chain - but most of the time I just get wet as I can't be bothered trying to pedal in trousers - especially with a derailleur / exposed chain).

Overtrousers don't need to be stretchy. You could wear leggings

Hi Wissy,

Stores like Aldi and Lidl often have good value cycling gear on offer as specials for limited periods..........only not right now.

However Lidl do have walking trousers from tomorrow, they may just do the job, see here LIDL or perhaps you might want cut a dash with this little number LIDL;)

Are you sure about that?

Army surplus Goretex - it's the way forward. I got some brand new, zipped leg, elasticated waist RAF goretex trousers for.....

wait for it.............

£14.50 delivered!

They are as good quality as GoreBikeWear stuff I also have - in fact maybe more so - they seem VERY tough wearing - as you'd expect.

Similar to these but mine are a bit darker blue:-

NEW RAF GORETEX TROUSERS, Medium 85/84/100 33" 33" Leg MVP rain | eBay

You just need to be willing to play around with the sizes a little (it's surplus so all the "common" sizes aren't surplus ;-) ). Mine are a bit long that I'd normally wear but that's perfect for cycling. Not so much hill walking!

Anyone thinking of getting the trousers from lidl make sure you get a size bigger than you are as they are small fitting on the waist.

I use a cape unless it's very windy - miles more comfortable than waterproofs. I put my helmet over the hood. They have the added advantage of keeping your bike electrics dry too. I got mine in Aldi for about £10. Not so good in the dark because it covers the lights on the handlebars.

This one has a window for the lights:

Really ? Seriously ? and with Helmet over the hood ??

Oh god....I am sorry Dave, if you are serious, just ignore me....you usually do lol :D :D

( thank god it wasnt wet enough at Bristol !! )

You lot are so vain.

From all my years of motorcycling in all weathers and all seasons, I found out that there's two types of clothing: Clothing that keeps you warm, dry and comfortable; clothing that looks nice. They're mutually exclusive sets. i.e. can't be in both categories.

I second Dave's choice of a cape for rain protection, much more practical than jackets and over-trousers.

When most of Britain cycled and the population knew far more about cycling than most do now, the cape was the almost universal choice. Everyone used them, from those commuting to work to paper boys on their rounds, for which the cape also kept the newspapers dry too.

Well, if you do then make sure you stay away from the clear PVC ones and hook the cape on the bars properly, or a gust of wind might show you and the rest of the neighbourhood why Scotsmens' kilts are made of heavy tartan ;)

I tried a lovely Duxback cape and can see how completely sensible they are ... except being an awkward sod couldn't stand it flapping in the wind and flogged it on eBay (no shortage of more sensible bidders lined up to take it off my hands).

Link to a stylish pair of womens' velo trousers which would look good off the bike was given above ...... same price as my Altura waterproof trousers - which as with so many things bought in a panic before toughening up wore twice and have not worn since .

Longish quickdry waterproof MTB shorts or strides (..with knee warmers under in Winter) are WAY more comfortable than trousers when you're pedalling, as long as it's above about minus 3. Long as your knees, core, neck, head, hands and feet stay warm and dry you don't actually feel the cold / wet on the other bits.... Then when you go fast people just think you're fit and sporty lol. Take your work clothes for the other end in a bag - they'll always be nice and dry .

Over-trousers are a complete waste of time IMHO. They stop you from pedaling properly and your legs get drenched in sweat and end up wetter than they would from the rain, and makes you stink. I'd rather wear normal trousers and let them get wet - miles more comfortable.

When I was in Bali, everybody traveled by small motorbikes and scooter. When it rains, they all put on capes -- just like Flecc said.
