I've found towing a large trailer results in very much bigger passing vehicle spaces, probably just because it attracts special attention.
Perhaps that is the answer, force every cyclist to tow a wide trailer when in traffic.
That'll stop people squeezing down the inside of any truck and add to visibilty.

I also find that when towing my trailer, an it was even more pronounced when i rode a recumbent tadpole trike. I put it down to the "WTF?!" factor of drivers seeing something they've never seen before.

I'm sure that's right Streethawk. Illogical as it seems, the higher the load on my trailer, the wider the gap drivers leave on the right as they pass me!

With this sort of load they leave a huge five or six feet gap.

Aye, it's amazing the damage a piece of flying polystyrene can do. Best stay well away. :p
I have scared drivers twice with that outfit. Once I got a a bit ambitious on the left turn out of a roundabout and the trailer tipped over and skated across the road towards the opposite lane. I had an emergency tie on the ball joint hitch so it didn't go far, but two drivers in the opposite direction slammed their car brakes on at the prospect of the loaded trailer possibly arriving across their lane.

The other one was with a 36 ton tram at a tramstop. I was crossing a short distance away in front of the tram on a little used pedestrian crossing when the tram driver carelessly set off while still looking at his left mirrors at the platform. Looking back to the front and finding himself accelerating fast towards my slow moving loaded outfit he slammed on the brakes. It's cruel I know, but the thought of all those tram passengers being catapulted off their seats by the emergency stop still makes me smile.

Got SMIDSY'd this afternoon.
I was going down the main road at 16mph (The speed thingy at the side of the road confirmed it), when a teenager wearing a hoodie up!! pulled out from a side road to my right and turned right. I kicked the side of his car and managed to stop safely without being squashed.
He got out looking belligerently at his damaged door, so being 70 years of age, I sat on the kerb and moaned about my heart, searching in my pockets all the time for the little tin of sweetners that I carry.
He soon drove off, but he has not heard the last of this because this is a village and I know his Gran!
